Michigan State football tight end Jack Velling named to Mackey Award watchlist
Last year, Velling made the watchlist after transferring to MSU from Oregon State, following his coach Jonathan Smith from Corvallis. While Velling did set a career-high in receptions with 36, his 411 yards were a step back from what he did in his sophomore season with the Beavers. Some fans were also disappointed in the production (Velling only caught one touchdown pass compared to eight the year prior with Oregon State), although I think it's fair to say the lower production wasn't exactly his fault as the Spartans' offense sputtered at times with some weak pass protection.

'Meet the Spartans' fan event to return next week
An annual tradition for Michigan State football is officially coming back next week. Michigan State announced on Tuesday that the "Meet the Spartans" event will return next week on August 21. This is the first time Michigan State is holding the event during fall preseason since 2019. The event had previously ran every year from 2003 to 2019 before it was forced to be canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19. Michigan State held a similar fan event last spring as part of the team's open practice. Here are the critical details for the event: Full details for the event can be found here. Former MSU LB, Notre Dame coach gives perfect 'football guy' media session quote
It's clear that former Michigan State star linebacker Max Bullough is the same fired up, standard "football guy" as he was during his playing days A former Michigan State star linebacker turned some heads on Monday during a preseason fall camp media session. Former Spartans star defender Max Bullough appears to be that same football-loving, stereotypical, tough "football guy" that we saw on the field during his playing days. Bullough now coaches linebackers at Notre Dame, and on Monday, he gave an inspired sound bite on preseason fall camp. Check out the clip of Bullough speaking to the media in the post below -- courtesy of Tyler Horka of Bullough was a fan favorite and star for the Spartans during some of hall of fame coach Mark Dantonio's teams. He was a team captain and starred for the Spartans during the 2013 Big Ten championship team that reached the program's first Rose Bowl in nearly 30 years. Bullough has quickly worked his way up the coaching ranks and it seems like he could very soon be a defensive coordinator and maybe one day a head coach. I personally wouldn't mind seeing him brought back to Michigan State at some point, especially, if he can bring back some of that Spartan Dawg defensive magic that we saw during his playing days. Former Spartan defensive back waived by Chicago Bears
Former Michigan State football defensive back Ameer Speed came to the Spartans from Georgia in the transfer portal. The Jacksonville (FL) native played for MSU in 2022 after spending the first four years of his career with the Bulldogs, where he won a National Championship. Following his collegiate career, Speed was drafted in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots. Now, trying to make a career for himself in the professional ranks, Speed is looking to latch on with an NFL franchise. Speed spent his first two seasons with the Patriots and the Indianapolis Colts, and had most recently signed with the Chicago Bears, but it appears that his time in the NFC North has come to a quick end. The Bears waived the former Spartan on Monday, ending his training camp in Chicago.
