Delhi: ‘Freedom incomplete till Yamuna becomes clean and alive again'
'Until the Yamuna becomes clean and alive once again, our celebration of freedom will remain incomplete. Being with Maa Yamuna on this auspicious day reinforces our faith and reminds us of our responsibility to protect our rivers. Our progress as a society must also reflect in the way we treat our natural heritage. I urge everyone present today to extend their support in the collective mission of restoring the Yamuna back to its pristine state,' Verma said.
Surrounded by visitors, government officials, local stakeholders, and several university principals and vice chancellors, Verma also undertook a 'boat yatra' with the boat draped in marigold garlands. The event drew hundreds of residents to the Vasudev Ghat.
The minister said the rejuvenation of the Yamuna could not be left to one department alone, urging Residents' Welfare Associations (RWAs) and youth groups from colleges and universities to join upcoming cleanliness drives. 'The true mark of a developed and civilised nation lies not just in its infrastructure, but in its respect for nature and preservation of cultural heritage,' he said.
In the recent months, the PWD has undertaken a string of measures to improve the Yamuna's banks, including debris removal, desilting and beautification works. Officials said the Independence Day programme was intended as both a symbolic gesture and a rallying point to expand public participation in these efforts.

Teen felicitated for saving 2 from drowning
1 2 Rourkela: A 14-year-old boy, who saved the lives of two youths from drowning four days back, was felicitated by NIT Rourkela Alumni Association (NITRAA) on the occasion of Independence Day. On Wednesday, around 2 pm, three youths went to Deo to take a bath. A fisherman advised them not to go into the river, but they didn't listen. 'Her parents have been found. She is with them now, but people don't believe me,' Shahnawaz said on Sunday. The calls kept floods triggered by a cloudburst on August 14 tore through Chasoti's hillside stream. Rajai Nalla surged violently, sweeping away boulders, trees, and homes. A bridge collapsed, and people crossing it were carried away. Pilgrims at campsites and langars for the Machail Mata Yatra disappeared within seconds. The disaster claimed at least 61 lives, injured 116, and left around 70 teams worked with excavators while relatives stood along the muddy banks, eyes locked on rescuers in orange vests. Desperation pushed them dangerously close to the torrent until Shahnawaz's voice cut through: 'Step back.''Everyone is desperate. You cannot stop them from rushing to the spot when they hear that a body has been found,' he said, his voice growing hoarse, as he ran up and down the stream with his the evening of August 14, while clearing debris from a damaged home, he noticed a faint movement — a tiny arm beneath the rubble. He pulled out the child, cleaned her, and wrapped her in a blanket. Then he helped free a woman trapped nearby — the girl's mother, a healthcare worker — alive. Measures taken by DMRC Advt Decline in incidents By , ETInfra The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has reported a fall in incidents of Overhead Equipment (OHE) trippings linked to kite flying during Independence Day and Janmashtami Traditionally, kite strings—particularly metallic-coated manjha—becoming entangled with overhead wires have been a major cause of service disruptions on these occasions in address the issue, DMRC has set up a dedicated response system. Maintenance teams of 5–7 members are deployed across all metro lines during the festivals. These teams remove entangled strings to restore services and maintain measures have also been introduced by the Traction Operation & Maintenance (O&M) team. These include installation of insulation sleeves on catenary wires at elevated stations with heavy bird and kite activity; modifications to increase clearance between live and earthed wires by using additional insulators; shifting of return conductors to lower the risk of contact with live wires; and regular inspection and maintenance, with Catenary Maintenance Vehicles (CMVs) deployed during non-operational hours to remove kite threads and other foreign to DMRC, disruptions caused by kite strings around Independence Day have reduced over recent years: 102 in 2021, 90 in 2022, 33 in 2023, 23 in 2024 and 11 in has also conducted awareness campaigns urging the public not to fly kites near Metro OHE wires, which carry 25,000 volts. The corporation said public cooperation has contributed to the reduction in trippings this year.
