In his most candid comments to date, "The American Nightmare" Cody Rhodes has opened up about the real reasons he left All Elite Wrestling. In a new interview clip, Rhodes revealed his 2022 departure stemmed from feeling "disrespected" in the house he helped build.
The former AEW Executive Vice President shared his story in a short preview clip from an upcoming appearance on The Bill Simmons Podcast. He confirmed that while there is still "respect and love" for AEW, there is also "clearly bad blood."

"I Wouldn't Stand For It"
Rhodes explained the difference between being disrespected in an established corporation like WWE versus the company he co-founded. He compared WWE to the "New York Yankees," a place where he's a number on a spreadsheet.
"But feeling disrespected at something I built with my friends... that we built, feeling disrespected there... I wouldn't stand for it," he said. He continued, "I did way more here than you think and you're going to find out the moment I'm out the door."
A Founding Father Walks Away
Cody Rhodes was an instrumental figure in the creation of All Elite Wrestling. Alongside The Young Bucks, he promoted the groundbreaking "All In" independent pay-per-view in 2018. The massive success of that event led directly to the formation of AEW, where Rhodes served as an Executive Vice President and a top in-ring star.

BERLIN, GERMANY - AUGUST 31: WWE Undisputed Universal Champion Cody Rhodes is seen backstage as he makes his way to the entrance position during the WWE Bash in Berlin Premium Live Event at Uber Arena on August 31, 2024 in Berlin, Germany. His shocking and abrupt departure from the company in February 2022, alongside his wife Brandi, remains one of the biggest stories in modern wrestling. At the time, a large portion of the AEW audience had strangely turned on him, booing him despite his babyface role, which likely contributed to the feeling of disrespect he described.
The Greatest Revenge Is Success
In the interview, Rhodes made it clear how he chose to respond to the situation. "I don't believe in the cold-hearted back-stabby type of revenge," he stated. "The greatest revenge on Earth is success."

His decision to "go elsewhere" has been validated by his incredible success. This Sunday, he will challenge the heel John Cena for the Undisputed WWE Championship in the main event of SummerSlam.

Two WWE Superstars May Be Leaving The Company
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The WWE future of Karrion Kross and Scarlett is in serious doubt as their contracts with the company are reportedly set to expire this weekend. A new report indicates that as of Monday afternoon, no new deal had been offered to the duo. Kross and Scarlett were noticeably absent from the August 4th episode of Monday Night Raw, and they were not backstage at the event. This has fueled intense speculation about their status with the company. A Looming WWE Deadline A new report from Fightful Select has confirmed that the contracts for both Karrion Kross and Scarlett are due to expire this coming weekend. A WWE higher-up noted that new deals had not yet been offered to either performer. This news comes just days after Kross concluded a high-profile feud with Sami Zayn at SummerSlam. The uncertainty surrounding his contract has become one of the biggest backstage stories in WWE. WWE Career of Creative Extremes Karrion Kross's WWE journey has been a rollercoaster of creative highs and lows. During his first run in NXT, he was booked as an unstoppable monster, and with Scarlett by his side, he became a dominant, two-time NXT Champion. However, his initial main roster debut in 2021 is considered one of the biggest fumbles in recent history, as he was stripped of his character and lost his first match, which killed his momentum and led to his release. The WWE logo is seen on the front of the WWE wrestling world headquarters on January 28, 2024 in Stamford, Connecticut. WWE founder Vince McMahon resigned from the WWE and its parent company TKO as executive chairman and its board of directors following allegations of sexual assault made public in a lawsuit in Connecticut. A former employee Janel Grant accused McMahon, 78, of sexual assault and sexually trafficking her. MoreHe was brought back by the new creative regime in 2022 with his full character restored. While his second run has been more successful, it has also been marked by inconsistent booking, with pushes that have often been stopped and started, which has reportedly been a source of professional frustration. More news: WWE Superstar Announces Retirement Match A Recent WWE Resurgence In recent months, Kross has seen a career resurgence, largely thanks to a groundswell of fan support. The "We Want Kross" movement on social media led to him being featured more prominently and adopting a more intense, personal character. This culminated in a long-running feud with one of Raw's top babyfaces, Sami Zayn. Despite losing to Zayn at both Night of Champions and this past weekend's SummerSlam, Kross's performance and character work were highly praised. With his popularity on the rise, the news of his potential departure is a puzzling development. The clock is now ticking for WWE and Kross to come to terms on a new agreement. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. WWE has announced that the former World Heavyweight Champion, GUNTHER, is out of action indefinitely. The announcement was made on the August 4th episode of Monday Night Raw, just two days after he lost his title in the main event of SummerSlam Night One. On the broadcast, commentator Michael Cole provided a storyline explanation for the former champion's upcoming absence. The on-screen injury is being used to write "The Ring General" off of television. Cole just announced Gunther will be out indefinitely because of an orbital — Julian Weeks (@JulianWks) August 5, 2025 A Brutal Diagnosis For GUNTHER Michael Cole stated to the television audience that during his match with CM Punk at SummerSlam, GUNTHER suffered a septal hematoma and an orbital blowout fracture. These severe-sounding facial injuries are the official storyline reason why he will be away from WWE programming. The on-air announcement provides a kayfabe explanation for the bloody nose GUNTHER was shown with at the conclusion of the SummerSlam main event. WWE Blending Fact And Fiction This storyline injury appears to be a masterful way to write GUNTHER off television so he can undergo a legitimate medical procedure. It was previously reported by Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer that the bloody finish at SummerSlam was a planned angle. The purpose was to provide cover for GUNTHER to have legitimate nose surgery in the near future. By creating a severe storyline injury, WWE is able to protect the aura of the nearly unbeatable "Ring General," even in defeat. The narrative suggests he lost his title while battling through serious fractures, making him look incredibly tough.
