G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant steps down after 45 years of public service
After serving for over 45 years in government, India's G20 Sherpa and former Niti Aayog Chief Executive Officer Amitabh Kant stepped down on Monday.
'I have decided to embrace new opportunities and begin a new chapter. I am deeply grateful to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi for accepting my resignation as India's G20 Sherpa and for the trust he placed in me to drive developmental initiatives that shaped India's growth trajectory,' Kant wrote on the social media platform LinkedIn.
Kant was India's G20 Sherpa for the 2023 G20 Summit in New Delhi and worked towards building international consensus on key issues in the run-up to the summit.
'Leading India's G20 Presidency in 2023 was a significant milestone in my career. Despite complex global challenges, we achieved unanimous consensus on the New Delhi Leaders' Declaration, and refocused attention on key developmental issues. India's G20 presidency was people-centric and inclusive, with meetings held across all states and union territories. This strengthened cooperative federalism, celebrated local culture and upgraded infrastructure nationwide. We also successfully ensured the inclusion of the African Union in the G20, fulfilling India's commitment to global equity and the voice of the Global South,' he wrote.
On his professional future, Kant did not disclose his immediate plans, but said that he is on the board of various academic institutions and will continue to serve there, along with other engagements with industry.
'Having worked in the government for years, I will continue to work towards the progress of the country, albeit in different ways. I can only say that I will keep working for research, innovation, academic institutions, startups and industry,' he told Business Standard.
Kant said that key sectors in India's growth story such as technology and infrastructure will continue to be his areas of focus. In his LinkedIn post, he said he would support free enterprise for Viksit Bharat (developed India).
'I'd requested the Prime Minister about a year ago, and I'm grateful that he approved my request. I felt like I needed a break after over four decades in government,' he said.
Kant was the longest-serving CEO of Niti Aayog — India's official policy think tank — where he served between 2016 and 2022.
'I had the privilege to lead path-breaking programmes such as the Aspirational Districts Programme, which transformed lives of common citizens in 115 of India's most underdeveloped districts. We helped lay the foundations for India's digital public infrastructure and pushed policy reforms across sectors — ranging from manufacturing through PLI schemes to innovation through the Atal Innovation Mission and sustainability through the Green Hydrogen Mission and Advanced Chemistry Cells. These efforts positioned India as a leader in innovation and climate action,' he wrote.
In his previous roles, including Secretary of the Department for Industrial Policy and Promotion in the central government (2014–2016), he was a key driver of flagship national initiatives such as Startup India and Make in India. His work in promoting tourism — first with the Government of Kerala and later at the Centre — earned him major recognition, chiefly for the Incredible India and Kerala: God's Own Country campaigns.

1 2 3 Noida: Nearly 4,000 homebuyers are set to benefit as Noida Authority board has allowed a co-developer to complete four stalled group housing projects developed by debt-ridden Supertech Ltd in the city. The clearance paves the way for Apex Group to step in and revive The Romano in Sector 118, North Eye and Cape Town in Sector 74, and Eco City in Sector 137. In April, Apex Group submitted a resolution plan before the Supreme Court seeking to revive 16 projects of debt-ridden realty firm, giving hope to over 15,000 homebuyers. The company agreed to clear Rs 678 crore of dues to five banks and around Rs 1,900 crore to Noida, Greater Noida and Yamuna authorities. In the initial phase, the company committed to invest Rs500 crore, with plans to deliver the flats within two years of taking over. Out of 50,962 housing units across the 16 projects, 39,870 have already been sold. Of these, 24,871 have been handed over to buyers, while 14,999 are yet to get possession. In Feb, the top court had stayed the appointment of state-owned NBCC as the project management consultant for completing the 16 stalled housing projects. "For homebuyers, it doesn't matter whether a co-developer or NBCC completes the project—they just want their homes delivered and registered at the earliest," Abhishek Kumar, president of NEFOWA, told TOI. "Money of nearly 10,500 buyers are stuck in these projects. Some have received possession but are still waiting for property registration. Others haven't received their flats at all," he said. Earlier, a section of buyers criticised the stay order on appointing NBCC to complete the stalled projects as an attempt to shield defaulters and escape accountability. They pointed out that Apex has no experience in handling stalled or litigated projects, while NBCC has managed the Amrapali case efficiently. Noida Authority officials, meanwhile, told TOI its approval was based on a policy devised by the Amitabh Kant committee and sanctioned by the UP govt earlier this year. The framework aimed to resolve legacy real estate logjams and deliver long-promised homes. Supertech chairman RK Arora said the four projects that are to be completed by Apex Group are 70-80% complete. "Apex will take over and complete them. We hope Greater Noida and Yamuna authorities will extend similar approvals," he added. Cape Town and North Eye together have 7,000, of which 5,500 have been already handed over to buyers. In Romano, 400 flats have been handed over while construction of 1,500 are pending. Of 1,600 flats in Eco City, 1,400 have been delivered and 200 remain. Satnam Singh Sachdeva, CMD of Apex Group, said his company plans to develop and deliver approximately 15,000 flats across all 16 Supertech projects. "Most of the project work is nearly completed. The remaining construction will resume once we get a go-ahead from Supreme Court," he said.

This comes a day after the 57-year-old shooter was arrested. He was also charged with the attempted murder of state senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette. After the shooting at the Hoffmans' home, Boelter visited a state representative's home in Maple Grove. However, that lawmaker was not at home. Acting US Attorney Joseph H Thompson said that Boelter allegedly went to the home of a state senator in New Hope. After learning about the shooting of the Hoffmans in Champlin, a New Hope police officer went to the senator's home to do a wellness check. NEW DELHI: A bureaucrat par excellence, Amitabh Kant, who has to his credit several first-of-their-kind initiatives over a 45-year illustrious career, has hung up his boots. Before bidding a final adieu to bureaucracy and public service, he served as India's G20 Sherpa, and prior to that, as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the government's top think tank, NITI Aayog. A 1980-batch Kerala cadre Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, Kant announced his decision to resign as India's G20 Sherpa through a heartfelt post on social media, expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for accepting his resignation and for the trust placed in him in driving developmental initiatives that shaped India's growth trajectory. With his close associates claiming that Kant will definitely not stop here, as he still has a lot of energy and vision to offer, speculations are rife about his future plans. Many believe he might join the private sector, but nothing can be said with certainty. However, Kant himself has expressed a desire to engage more with start-ups, think tanks, and academic institutions in a personal capacity.
