Tigers' age-defying Charlie Morton takes aim at Astros
Morton, who will start the finale of a three-game series against the visiting Houston Astros on Wednesday afternoon, has delivered two quality starts in three outings for his new team.
On paper, Morton produced his best start of the season on Friday. The 41-year-old right-hander tossed six scoreless innings while allowing just two hits against the Minnesota Twins.
However, Morton had to deal with a rain delay and an extended first inning as his teammates staked him to a 5-0 lead. The Tigers won the game 7-0.
"We were talking through the first three innings, like, we really weren't on the same page," catcher Dillon Dingler said. "He was trying to find a feel for his curveball but we were able to mix in the other pitches. He's got so many great pitches that move so much."
Once Morton was able to control his celebrated curveball, Minnesota batters had no chance.
"I need my breaking ball," Morton said. "So whatever we've got to do, whatever we've got to do to get it going. I know we had a lead, but you still have to get through some innings. My glove-side breaking ball, even when I hit guys or if I'm yanking a couple, it's not the end of the world. But (Friday) early, it was trying to get it going for strikes."
He will face a Houston offense mired in a deep slump. The Astros were shut out four of the past five games. They haven't scored in 28 innings, including 10 empty frames on Tuesday as the Tigers pulled out a 1-0 win.
Morton (8-10, 5.20 ERA) has a 4-6 record and 5.97 ERA in 12 career starts against the Astros. He was also a key member of the Astros during their 2017 championship run, including his four-inning relief stint for the win in Game 7 of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Framber Valdez (11-6, 3.01 ERA), Morton's mound opponent on Wednesday, cruised through the first four months of the season. It's been a different story in August, during which he is 0-2 with a 5.89 ERA in three starts.
Valdez lasted 6 2/3 innings in his most recent outing against the Baltimore Orioles on Friday. The 31-year-old left-hander gave up four runs (three earned) and nine hits while recording six strikeouts and walking one.
His pitching opponent that night, Brandon Young, had a perfect game going until there were two outs in the eighth.
"I would say 100 percent it affected me," Valdez said. "I felt like I couldn't even sit down and I was already walking up to get out there. Sometimes that's just the game of baseball. Sometimes a pitcher is going to have a better game. Sometimes they're going to throw a perfect game. ... I felt like I couldn't get a drink of water in and I was already out there."
Valdez is 2-2 with a 2.49 ERA in eight career outings against the Tigers, including seven starts.

Hole locations can be made trickier, different tees can be used and rough will be longer. Most obviously, the 14th hole – with the tee moved up – reverts to a par 4 after playing as a par 5 in 2024, reducing the course to a par 70. Also, on the left side of the 8th hole, the lake to the left of the green looms as a bigger danger, and there has been a small fairway reduction on the 17th. The greens will be more receptive to approach shots than the new hard surfaces of last season. But short grass and steep banks can send errant shots away from the putting surface. In short, East Lake will be more of a challenge now. The course already favoured driving accuracy and will do so even more this time, with precise approach play also key. Best way of siding with Scheffler Scottie Scheffler will probably win this tournament again. He does not have the head start he had when taking last year's event, when surviving a bit of a wobble, but he is better now than he has ever been. Scheffler can be backed at 17/10 win only, which is tempting, but slight odds on for a top-two finish, which offers a safety net, is more tempting. Willi Castro, Cubs look to take long series against Brewers
August 20 - After making up two games of ground in a day against their National League Central rivals, the Chicago Cubs will look to take the five-game series against the visiting Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday night. Chicago beat Milwaukee 6-4 and then 4-1 to sweep a day-night doubleheader on Tuesday but still sits seven games behind the MLB-leading Brewers in the NL Central. Starring in both games for the Cubs was trade deadline acquisition Willi Castro, whom the club will need to produce at a higher clip in the homestretch. Castro hit a three-run shot in the first game on Tuesday -- his first home run since coming over from Minnesota last month -- and threw out Brice Turang at home from right field in the nightcap to thwart a late Milwaukee rally. Castro is hitting just .150 (6-for-40) with the Cubs but had his best day for the club in a crucial two-game doubleheader. "It's been a rough past two weeks, but we showed what we can do in the doubleheader," Castro said. "We have a great team, we have a great staff. ... It's been tough for me since I got here. I know I haven't produced as I know how. But it's OK. Whenever they give me an opportunity, I will get the job done." After a 5-8 start to August, the Cubs have won four of their last five games and hold a two-game lead over the San Diego Padres for the top wild-card spot in the NL. Hoping to continue the momentum in Game 4 of the series -- which Chicago leads 2-1 -- Colin Rea (9-5, 3.99 ERA) will make his 26th appearance (22nd start) on Wednesday for the Cubs, facing his former team for the second time this season. Last time out, the veteran right-hander allowed one run on three hits across five innings in a no-decision on Friday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Cubs lost 3-2. Rea, who pitched in 59 games for the Brewers from 2021-24, is 0-1 with an 8.59 ERA in two career starts against them. He faced Milwaukee on July 29, allowing four runs in four innings in a 9-3 loss. The Brewers have dropped three of four since winning 14 consecutive games, a single-season franchise record. Milwaukee also has lost back-to-back games for the first time since July 25-26. The team's rookie phenom, Jacob Misiorowski (4-1, 3.89 ERA), is slated to make his ninth start of the season on Wednesday and second since coming off the 15-day injured list due to a left tibia contusion. The 23-year-old All Star suffered his worst outing thus far against the Cincinnati Reds on Friday, surrendering five runs on four hits in just 1 1/3 innings in a game the Brewers rallied to win 10-8. "He was emotional, but that's part of him growing up and learning how to get by, even though he didn't feel right or wasn't in sync." Aces rally past Dream in potential postseason preview
August 20 - The Las Vegas Aces, led by 32 points from A'ja Wilson, rallied from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit to overtake the Atlanta Dream 74-72 and post an eighth consecutive win. Neither team had led by more than five points entering the fourth quarter, but Atlanta held a 61-57 edge and scored the first six points of the fourth quarter to go up 67-57 with 8:44 remaining. But Las Vegas then went on a 13-0 run to claim a 70-67 edge, capped by a Jewell Loyd 3-pointer with 4:09 to play. Wilson scored six points in that pivotal stretch.
