PacifiCity buyers lose court bid
Published on: Sun, Aug 03, 2025 Text Size: Kota Kinabalu: The High Court has dismissed a lawsuit filed by PacifiCity condominium purchasers against Sabah Development Bank Berhad (SDB), dealing a blow to seeking compensation for the troubled mixed-use development. The suit, initiated by the PacifiCity Project Purchasers Welfare Association, was brought against five parties involved in the troubled project in Kota Kinabalu - Apex Juta Sdn Bhd (developer of the residential component), Pacific Sanctuary Holdings Sdn Bhd (developer of the commercial component), Majlis Kebajikan dan Rekreasi Kakitangan Kerajaan Negeri Sabah (Maksak), the landowner, Kuok Khoon Ping @ Kuek Koon Ping, the director of the developer and SDB, the project's bridging financier. The purchasers alleged that SDB was negligent, breached its duty of care and failed to safeguard their interests following the abandonment of the project, despite the issuance of a Certificate of Practical Completion in November 2020. Messrs Ronny Cham & Co appeared for the plaintiffs, while SDB was represented by Messrs Tan, Arthur Borine & Partners, who submitted that the plaintiffs' claims were riddled with legal misconceptions, unsupported by evidence and internally inconsistent. They characterised the suit as a broad attempt to target every possible party in the hope of extracting compensation. They argued it would not be fair, just, or reasonable to impose a duty of care on the bank in the circumstances, and urged the court to dismiss the claim in its entirety. Chamber vows support for Kota Kinabalu High School' AI blueprint

Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah United Chinese Chambers of Commerce (SUCCC) has committed to supporting Kota Kinabalu High School's five-year artificial intelligence development blueprint, which aims to establish the institution as a leader in Artificial Intelligence (AI) education within the State's digital ecosystem. SUCCC President Datuk Michael Lui Yen Sang who is also Kota Kinabalu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KKCCCI) President received a delegation from the school's Board of Governors led by Chairman Datuk Lim Kiat Kong, to discuss the comprehensive development plan coinciding with the school's 76th anniversary celebrations. Advertisement The centrepiece of the initiative is the construction of a dedicated AI Centre designed to create a sustainable AI education ecosystem. The facility will serve as a training hub to equip all students with fundamental AI application skills and enhance their digital literacy capabilities. Beyond the AI Centre, the fundraising campaign encompasses several infrastructure improvements including hall renovations, student washroom upgrades, running track and lighting system enhancements, basketball court refurbishments and the construction of a student recreation centre. 'This five-year AI development blueprint aligns perfectly with the National Digital Education Policy,' said Michael, who also chairs the school's Advisory Board. The school is seeking contributions ranging from RM1, 000 to RM100, 000 through its School Building Fund. Sabah United Chinese Chambers of Commerce targets the youngsters

Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah United Chinese Chambers of Commerce (SUCCC) is targeting 30 per cent of its membership to comprise young entrepreneurs. Its President, Datuk Michael Lui Yen Sang, said SUCCC currently has 30,000 members statewide, including 1,000 in the state capital.
