Now, a mayor in Bihar gets Election Commission notice ‘for 2 voter IDs'
In a notice to Muzaffarpur Mayor Nirmala Devi, the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) of Muzaffarpur Assembly constituency wrote that it had come to the authority's notice that she possessed two separate Election Photo Identity Card numbers.
EPIC number is the unique 10-digit number assigned to each voter by the Election Commission of India.
'We have learnt that your name has appeared as a voter in SIR draft roll at booth number 153 and at booth number 257,' the EC's notice said.
It added, 'We have also found that your name had been mentioned as a voter at both booths before the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. You are requested to explain your position before 5 pm on August 16 so that we can take further action.'
In a post on X, the Muzaffarpur district magistrate said notice had been issued to Nirmala Devi and two of her relatives 'for clarification by the Electoral Registration Officer of Assembly Constituency No. 94 — Muzaffarpur in the matter related to placing names in two polling stations.'
This came hours after Tejashwi alleged at a press conference that the mayor had two voter ID cards. It also comes days after the Election Commission of India issued a notice to Bihar deputy chief minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Vijay Kumar Sinha for possessing two voter identity cards.
'While ECI has been targeting our voters by striking off their names from electoral rolls during the ongoing SIR process, it has been giving two voter cards to people having affiliation with the BJP in the same Assembly segment. Muzaffarpur mayor Nirmala Devi, who is closely associated with the BJP and is a prospective candidate in the upcoming Assembly polls, has been issued two voter ID cards,' he alleged.
Devi said she is yet to receive the notice. 'Once I receive it, I will respond accordingly,' she told reporters.
This comes at a time when the Election Commission of India's voter rolls revision exercise has been a subject of controversy. Called Special Intensive Revision, the exercise is aimed at updating electoral rolls, but the Opposition has been protesting against it, claiming it could potentially disenfranchise lakhs of people.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate two major national highway projects worth ₹11,000 crore in Rohini on Sunday. The projects — the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) and the Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway — aim to decongest the Capital and improve connectivity, the Prime Minister's Office said in a statement. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta termed UER-II a 'historic gift' for the city and said that it would not only move Delhi closer to becoming traffic-free but also strengthen connectivity across the National Capital Region. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Saturday said the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) was not AIADMK to be afraid of Enforcement Directorate (ED) raids. Speaking at the CPI State conference titled 'Velga Jananayagam', the Chief Minister said the Union government was threatening the leaders of the Opposition parties, and referred to the ED raid at Minister I. Periyasamy's house on Saturday. 'We are not Edappadi K. Palaniswami to form an alliance with the BJP immediately after raids are conducted in relatives' houses. The DMK has faced many revengeful acts like this. Tamil Nadu people have political awareness, and they will defeat the BJP. In the 2026 Assembly election, the DMK alliance will win, defeating all such plots,' he said. 'The unity of our alliance is troubling many. Therefore, former Chief Minister Palaniswami is suddenly showing love towards Communists. No one is a slave to anyone. The Dravidian movement and Communism grew against slavery,' Mr. Stalin added. The Communists never forget to criticise the government, and the government does not forget to fulfill the demands of the Left parties. This is democracy, and so the alliance continues, he said, urging the democratic forces to unite against casteism and majoritarianism. 'Those who are against secularism and social justice are trying to divide the alliance, but their intention will not succeed. Eventually, democracy wins, and we [the democratic forces] have the responsibility to make it win,' he said. Mr. Stalin further announced that a memorial would be built near Salem Central Prison, where 22 Communist cadres were killed in the 1950 firing. He said instructions were given to the officials concerned, and that the works would begin on Sunday. Later, the Chief Minister reached Dharmapuri district, and participated in a road show from Adiyamankottai to Travellers Bungalow near the Collectorate.
