Row over biased panchayati raj order: UP CM orders withdrawal, suspends official
However, the state government has suspended the joint director of the panchayati raj department following the directives of CM Yogi Adityanath who has also expressed his displeasure over the controversial order. He termed the directive 'completely discriminatory and unacceptable' and ordered its immediate withdrawal. He also described the incident as a serious administrative lapse.
The order, which directed officials to clear encroachments from Gram Sabha land by persons belonging to a particular caste (Yadav) and religion (Muslim) across the state's 57,691 village panchayats, was issued by the panchayati raj office in Ballia on August 2. As the letter went viral on Monday (August 4) evening, a political uproar started following which joint director, panchayati raj, SN Singh was suspended late on Monday night.
CM Yogi Adityanath clearly said this type of language and thinking is not only against the policies of the government, but also creates division in the society, which will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
He said action against encroachments should be taken with complete fairness, facts and law, and not on the basis of caste or religion. He has also warned the officials not to let such mistakes be repeated.
Meanwhile, attacking the government on the issue, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav alleged: 'It just shows the mentality of the government. This is the ruling party's strategy. First, they made their leader give a statement against (SP MP from Kairana) Iqra Hasan, then they made their people give a statement against Dimple Yadav (SP MP from Mainpuri), but no action was taken against them. However, PDA people are aware and know that their aim is to uproot the BJP.'
'We all know who is the biggest mafia in the state. You all remember what was said about Iqra Hasan by a BJP leader. They talk about encroachment, but most of the ponds and lakes were illegally acquired by BJP people in the state. One can go through the registry of properties in Ayodhya and Varanasi, everything will be clear,' Yadav alleged while talking to the press at Janeshwar Mishra park on Tuesday.
Later, the SP chief in a post X said his party will go to the court against such orders, 'Action should be taken against whatever is illegal because illegal is illegal, then why are people of a particular caste or religion being targeted. The judiciary should take immediate cognizance as this is an unconstitutional act. We will go to court against it. The more PDA is harassed, the more PDA unity will strengthen,' he wrote on his X account.
Echoing similar sentiments, Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Ajay Rai said, 'It is now clear what is in the mind of this government and its officers. Orders based on caste or religion are not acceptable at any cost. The officers who are hand in gloves with the BJP should be severely punished.'

‘Confer martyr status to those killed in Pahalgam'
While the ruling dispensation is going gaga over the success of Operation Sindoor, it is yet to pay heed to repeated pleas by bereaved families of Pahalgam victims of conferring martyr status on those who were massacred in Baisaran valley on April 22. Sanjay Dwivedi, father of Shubham Dwivedi, the first victim of the terror attack, has written two letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding compensation for bereaved families and granting 'martyr status'. Dwivedi, in his letter, reportedly expressed hope that leaders across parties lines would stand by their demand, as the issue, beyond petty politics, is one of national interest. Panchayati Raj order attracts Yogi action A botched order from the Panchayati Raj department was about to put Yogi government in the dock if the CM had not rushed in to withdraw it right on time. The order pertained to removal of encroachments by those of a 'specific caste (Yadav) and a specific religion (Muslim)' from 57,691 village panchayats across the state. Calling the order 'completely discriminatory and unacceptable', and a serious administrative lapse, the CM also ordered immediate suspension of joint director SN Singh, the signatory of the order. The CM found its language and perspective divisive, and violation of government policies, which he asserted, could not be driven by prejudice.

Punjab BJP march against land-pooling from August 17
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Punjab unit on Thursday announced a state-wide yatra titled 'Save Land, Save Farmers', from August 17 to September 5. This yatra, the Punjab BJP said will go village-to-village, creating awareness among farmers against this scheme and mobilising them The yatra will kick off on August 17 from Patiala, and pass through villages in Malwa, Majha, and Doaba regions before culminating in Pathankot on September 5. This announcement was made by BJP's state vice president, Kewal Singh Dhillon, during a press conference held at the party's Punjab headquarters. He was accompanied by state general secretaries Anil Sareen, Rakesh Rathore, Dayal Singh Sodhi and party spokesperson Pritpal Singh Baliawal. Dhillon stated that during this yatra, the Punjab BJP will go village-to-village, creating awareness among farmers against this scheme and mobilising them. The BJP leaders condemned the Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government. 'Through the land pooling scheme, the government seeks to hand over farmers' land to mafias, which is completely unacceptable,' Sareen said. HC has raised valid questions against land-pooling: Bajwa Chandigarh The leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Punjab assembly, Partap Singh Bajwa, said that the high court has rightly asked for the social and environmental impact assessments for implementing the land pooling policy. 'This scheme was an outright violation of the Land Acquisition Act. This policy's purpose was to circumvent social and environmental impact assessments, enabling the government to seize farmers' land and threaten the very foundation of our agrarian economy,' Bajwa said. Bajwa said that the high court recognised the serious challenges faced not only by farmers but also by landless labourers who rely on agricultural work, emphasising that the government had provided no rehabilitation plans for them.

Karnataka high court stays legal action against minister
Bengaluru: The Karnataka high court has temporarily halted the legal proceedings initiated against state energy minister KJ George, in connection with the allegations surrounding the state's smart meter tender process. The Karnataka high court has temporarily halted the legal proceedings initiated against state energy minister KJ George in connection with the the state's smart meter tender process. (HT PHOTO) The interim stay was ordered by Justice MI Arun, who was hearing George's plea challenging the maintainability of a case filed in the Special Court designated to handle criminal matters involving lawmakers. The case stems from a private complaint filed by BJP leaders CN Ashwath Narayan, SR Vishwanath and Dheeraj Muniraj. Earlier, on July 23, the Special Court had ordered the registration of a private complaint against George, former BESCOM managing director Mahantesh Bilgi and engineer Ramesh HJ. The complaint alleges irregularities in the awarding of the smart meter contract, alleging that the minister colluded with BESCOM officials to favour a particular company— Rajashree Electricals—by diluting eligibility norms and undervaluing the contract. The complaint pertains to a tender floated by BESCOM on September 26, 2024, for smart meter services. The BJP leaders allege that the contract was awarded to Rajashree Electricals, a company described in the petition as a shell entity based in Davangere, in violation of the Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurement (KTPP) Act, 2000, and the rules of the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC). The petitioners claim that instead of issuing separate tenders for each power supply company across regions, the entire contract was routed through BESCOM, bypassing norms meant to ensure competition and transparency. Appearing for George, senior advocate Shathabish Shivanna contended that the prosecution lacked mandatory sanction. 'Our client is a sitting legislator. Under Section 17A of the Prevention of Corruption Act, prior sanction from the competent authority is required to prosecute a public servant. In this case, no such sanction was obtained before initiating proceedings. This makes the entire process legally untenable,' he argued. The court took cognisance of the argument and stayed proceedings before the Special Court. George's legal team further asserted that the complaint lacked substance and was politically driven. 'A plain reading of the allegations shows that our client had no direct or indirect role. The complaint is vague, politically motivated, and part of a larger pattern of harassment by BJP legislators,' they said. Advocates Samruddh Sura Hegde and Leela P appeared for the BESCOM officers named in the case. The interim stay drew sharp reactions from politicians on both sides of the political spectrum. 'It is an open secret that minister KJ George through BESCOM looted public money on the pretext of smart meters,' said BJP state media convener K Karunakar. 'A smart meter costs ₹10,000 here while same meter cost is just ₹2,000 in neighbouring states. This is a clear case of corruption and the court will punish him,' he added. The Congress rejected the allegations, with KPCC general secretary Manjunath Bhandari saying, 'This is not a scam. The government is doing all tender proceedings transparently and all the suppliers of meters were allowed to participate in the process.' He added, 'KJ George will come out clean after the probe.'
