MMEA detains fishing vessel and tanker during routine operation in Selangor waters
PORT KLANG: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained a local fishing vessel and a tanker during a routine operation on Tuesday (April 22).
Selangor MMEA director Maritime Captain Abdul Muhaimin Muhammad Salleh stated that the agency's KM Danga had detained the first vessel and its crew after they failed to produce valid identification documents.
"The first arrest involved a Class C local shipping vessel at about 1pm, located 17 nautical miles southwest of Pulau Tengah.
"Upon inspection, it was found that the boat was operated by a skipper with four Myanmar crew members aged between 36 and 49," said Captain Abdul Muhaimin.
He added that the vessel was found to have also breached conditions stipulated in its license by using nets less than 38mm to fish.
Those detained were taken to the Royal Malaysian Navy jetty in Pulau Indah to be investigated under the Fisheries Act 1985 and the Immigration Act 1959/63.
Later in the day, at about 3.15pm, KM Danga detained the tanker, which had anchored without permission at 5.9 nautical miles west of Pulau Pintu Gedong.
"The ship was navigated by a 36-year-old Thai captain with 16 crew members aged between 20 and 55, comprising 13 Thai nationals, two of whom were women, two Myanmar nationals, and one Indonesian national," said Captain Abdul Muhaimin.
The tanker was found to have breached the Merchant Shipping Ordinance (MSO) 1952 by not seeking permission from the Malaysian Marine Department director-general before anchoring and for failing to fly the Malaysian flag, he added.
According to Captain Abdul Muhaimin, the vessel's second deck officer and second engineer were taken to the Pulau Indah marine police jetty for further action.
He urged members of the public to report any suspicious activities or emergencies at sea to the Selangor State Maritime Operations Center at 03-3176 0627 or dial 999 for immediate action during emergencies.

Vietnamese 'romance scammers' busted in Thai luxury villa raid
BANGKOK: Thai police have dismantled a major call centre operation run by a gang of 27 Vietnamese nationals, who set up their base in luxury villas in the suburbs of Bangkok to perpetrate an elaborate 'romance scam' that defrauded victims of tens of millions of baht. The bust, led by Pol Lt Col Paiboon Sorso, Deputy Superintendent of the Patrol Division, saw 191 police officers storm the illicit operation, apprehending 27 individuals and confiscating a significant cache of evidence including 116 mobile phones, 45 computers, and five grams of ketamine. Pol Maj Gen Noppasil Poonsawas, Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, revealed that the investigation was triggered by public complaints about a suspicious gathering of foreign nationals. Subsequent enquiries by patrol police confirmed that individuals had rented two properties in an upscale village on the city's outskirts, displaying behaviour that warranted police intervention. The gang, comprising five women and 22 men, reportedly travelled from Hanoi, Vietnam, entering Thailand in October 2024 on tourist visas – allowing only a 60-day stay. Most members entered via the Khlong Luek checkpoint in Sa Kaeo province before forming the call centre operation. Their methodology mirrored classic 'romance scam' tactics, primarily targeting other Vietnamese individuals. The scammers created enticing online profiles featuring attractive and seemingly affluent individuals, posing as property investors or professionals. After establishing trust and cultivating a romantic connection, they would then manipulate victims into transferring money for various fabricated "missions," often citing made-up debts or hardships to elicit sympathy and financial aid. The scamming activities largely took place through the popular Vietnamese chat application "Zalo." Investigations into the seized computers revealed a staggering scale of fraud: each of the 27 workstations, manned by a dedicated suspect on rotation, was capable of swindling approximately 1.2 billion Vietnamese Dong per month since March. Two Thai women among five nabbed using illegal jetties to enter Malaysia
RANTAU PANJANG: Two Thai women were among five individuals arrested by the General Operations Force (GOF) for entering the country through illegal routes. The five were detained at three separate locations here between 8.45am and 1.30pm yesterday. GOF Southeast Brigade commander Datuk Nik Azhan Nik Abd Hamid said the arrests were made during a surveillance operation under 'Op Taring Wawasan Kelantan' in the Rantau Panjang area. "The suspects, three Malaysian men and two Thai women, were apprehended at three illegal jetties, namely Parkir, Pohon Jambu, and MCA. "The Thai women were found to have entered Malaysia without valid travel documents," he said. Nik Azhan added that the three Malaysian men tested positive for methamphetamine and ketamine. "They were detained under Section 5(2) of the Immigration Act 1959/63," he said. He added that the GOF would continue efforts to curb illegal border crossings along Malaysia's borders. In a separate case, a Thai woman was detained for smuggling frozen chicken and food items worth RM62,000 in Tumpat yesterday. The 48-year-old woman was arrested during a raid at a store in Pengkalan Kubor. "Also seized in the 11.30am operation was a four-wheel drive vehicle used to transport the goods," he said. He added that the 602kg of frozen food and 240kg of frozen chicken had been smuggled from Thailand for local distribution.
