Odisha's Koraput Police arrested Communist Party of India (Maoist) leader Kunjam Hidma alias Mohan in a special operation by the district police and Odisha's specialised district voluntary force (DVF) constabulary unit Thursday.
Hidma, an area committee member, was arrested from the Petguda jungle under Boipariguda police limit, with the police seizing a huge cache of arms and ammunition — including an AK-47 and 35 rounds of bullets. According to police sources, Hidma was part of a party sent to recce the area and give a safe passage to Maoist leader Suresh, a state zonal committee member, from Odisha to Andhra Pradesh. Hidma is working under Suresh.
Significantly, Madvi Hidma, the de facto military chief of the CPI (Maoist) in Chhattisgarh who commands Battalion 1 of the People's Liberation Guerrilla Army, has yet to be arrested.
According to Koraput SP Rohit Varma, a special operation was launched Wednesday night after security forces received credible intelligence inputs on the movement of a group of banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) cadres in the forest area near village Petguda.
'The DVF team noticed a group of Maoists camping at the hill on Thursday early morning. As the team moved to surround it, the Maoists, on being alerted, opened fire at the DVF team and fled into the jungle. In response, the team exercised controlled fire in self-defence. During the subsequent search, one Maoist cadre was apprehended while attempting to hide in the nearby bushes,' said Verma.
A native of Janaguda under Usur police limit in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district, Kunjam joined the Maoist movement in 2007 at the age of 14. He was initially inducted into the Bal Sangham and Jana Natya Mandali (JNM), the cultural wing of the Maoists with which he was associated till 2013, police sources said.
Between 2013 and 2015, Kunjam worked as a party member under the Usur Local Operational Squad (LOS) – the local unit of the outfit — and received military training, during which he was issued a single-shot rifle. In 2016, he started operating in AOB (Andhra Odisha Border) platoon and was promoted to the rank of area committee member in 2019 and had by now progressed to using a self-loading rifle (SLR).
Hidma served in a military platoon under Suresh, operating in the Boipariguda area of Koraput district — the area that marks the border between Odisha's Malkangiri district and the Pedabailu region in Andhra Pradesh's Alluri Sitharama Raju (ASR) district. He was involved in a number of Maoist attacks in Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh since 2021.
Police said Hidma was involved in several encounters with police and had Maoist-related cases against him in Odisha's Koraput and Malkangiri districts as well as in Chhattisgarh.

After Maoist loot, cops seize two trucks laden with explosives

ROURKELA: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Rourkela police on Sunday recovered two explosives-laden trucks parked suspiciously near a fuel station at Balughat in RN Pali here for the last two days. The recovery comes close on the heels of the loot of huge quantity of blasting explosives by Maoists from Banko forest in K Balang on May 27. The source of the explosives looted by Maoists and the explosives seized on Sunday has been traced to the same warehouse in Bargaon block of Sundargarh district. The warehouse has been sealed from May 28. Sources said about 116 packets of gelatine sticks, 416 detonators and 750 metre of charging electric wires were recovered from the two trucks. Police said it is suspected that owner of the warehouse Shraban Agarwal is involved in illegal supply of explosives to stone quarries and mines for monetary gain. A top police officer said during investigation, the SIT learnt that on May 27, three trucks laden with explosives had come out of the warehouse. While one truck was looted by the Maoists, the two others were kept hidden. During interrogation in the K Balang case, the warehouse owner told police that explosives loaded in the two trucks were delivered to clients.

‘Lost our only income source': Street vendors with licences face evictions

NEW DELHI: Suresh, 33, had been selling chole kulche from a stall in South East Delhi's Harkesh Nagar for seven years a business he inherited from his father, who ran it for 23 years before him. But on May 27, his stall was among nearly 100 shops demolished by the MCD during an anti-encroachment drive. 'This was our only source of income. How will we survive now?' he asked, standing next to the rubble where his stall once stood. His case is far from isolated. Over the past month, hundreds of street vendors across the city have faced eviction amid intensified anti-encroachment drives led by municipal and police officials. Many vendors allege harassment, confiscation of goods, and demolition of stalls even those operated by vendors with valid Certificates of Vending (CoVs) issued by municipal authorities.

Maoists torch mining vehicles in Hazaribagh, youth injured in firing

Hazaribagh: Armed militants of the banned outfit Tritiya Sammelan Prastuti Committee (TSPC) torched two vehicles belonging to BGR Mining Company and opened indiscriminate fire in Jharkhand's Hazaribagh district on Sunday night, leaving a youth injured and triggering panic in the area, officials said on Monday. The incident took place near Pagar-Pandu village in the Keredari police station limits. BGR Mining is involved in coal extraction work under the KD (Khalari-Dakra) project of Central Coalfields Limited (CCL). The militants targeted the company's vehicles parked at the site and fled after setting them ablaze. Eyewitnesses said the attackers, part of an armed squad, fired randomly before escaping into the nearby forests. A youth caught in the gunfire sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital for medical treatment. His condition is said to be stable. Security forces recovered a pamphlet from the scene, purportedly issued by TSPC's sub-zonal commander Kaushal. In it, the group warned NTPC, CCL, L&T, and other contractor firms not to begin any operations without prior "permission" from the organisation. The pamphlet threatened more severe action if the warning is ignored. The TSPC claimed in the note that it is working in the interest of local tribals and the general public. It accused the government of harassing innocent villagers under the pretext of anti-Maoist operations and described its own activities as a fight against exploitation. Following the attack, police from the Pagar outpost, led by in-charge Vicky Thakur, reached the spot and launched a search operation. Patrolling has been intensified in the region, and a probe is underway. Suspected individuals are being questioned. The incident has sparked fear among workers associated with mining operations in Keredari and surrounding areas. Similar incidents have been reported in recent weeks. In early May, Maoists torched six vehicles and two excavators at a mining site in Turisat village under Chandwa police station limits in Latehar district. Just a week ago, militants of the People's Liberation Front of India (PLFI) set fire to two vehicles, including a road roller, involved in a road construction project in Khunti district's Rania area.
