Maoist leader Kunjam Hidma arrested in special operation in Odisha

Indian Express29-05-2025
Odisha's Koraput Police arrested Communist Party of India (Maoist) leader Kunjam Hidma alias Mohan in a special operation by the district police and Odisha's specialised district voluntary force (DVF) constabulary unit Thursday.
Hidma, an area committee member, was arrested from the Petguda jungle under Boipariguda police limit, with the police seizing a huge cache of arms and ammunition — including an AK-47 and 35 rounds of bullets. According to police sources, Hidma was part of a party sent to recce the area and give a safe passage to Maoist leader Suresh, a state zonal committee member, from Odisha to Andhra Pradesh. Hidma is working under Suresh.
Significantly, Madvi Hidma, the de facto military chief of the CPI (Maoist) in Chhattisgarh who commands Battalion 1 of the People's Liberation Guerrilla Army, has yet to be arrested.
According to Koraput SP Rohit Varma, a special operation was launched Wednesday night after security forces received credible intelligence inputs on the movement of a group of banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) cadres in the forest area near village Petguda.
'The DVF team noticed a group of Maoists camping at the hill on Thursday early morning. As the team moved to surround it, the Maoists, on being alerted, opened fire at the DVF team and fled into the jungle. In response, the team exercised controlled fire in self-defence. During the subsequent search, one Maoist cadre was apprehended while attempting to hide in the nearby bushes,' said Verma.
A native of Janaguda under Usur police limit in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district, Kunjam joined the Maoist movement in 2007 at the age of 14. He was initially inducted into the Bal Sangham and Jana Natya Mandali (JNM), the cultural wing of the Maoists with which he was associated till 2013, police sources said.
Between 2013 and 2015, Kunjam worked as a party member under the Usur Local Operational Squad (LOS) – the local unit of the outfit — and received military training, during which he was issued a single-shot rifle. In 2016, he started operating in AOB (Andhra Odisha Border) platoon and was promoted to the rank of area committee member in 2019 and had by now progressed to using a self-loading rifle (SLR).
Hidma served in a military platoon under Suresh, operating in the Boipariguda area of Koraput district — the area that marks the border between Odisha's Malkangiri district and the Pedabailu region in Andhra Pradesh's Alluri Sitharama Raju (ASR) district. He was involved in a number of Maoist attacks in Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh since 2021.
Police said Hidma was involved in several encounters with police and had Maoist-related cases against him in Odisha's Koraput and Malkangiri districts as well as in Chhattisgarh.

Tricolour Rises In Maoist HQ Foothills: Kawande's First Tryst With Independence Day

1 2 Nagpur: For the first time after 78 years of independence, the national anthem 'Jana Gana Mana' will reverberate through this once-impenetrable Maoist stronghold of Kawande on the foothills of Abujmarh hills — the tottering guerrilla headquarters. The towering black flags and red-stamped pamphlets have vanished, and Maoist boycott calls are a distant echo as the remote tribal hamlet on Maharashtra-Chhattisgarh border gears up to unfurl the tricolour for the first time. With the area flooded and not congenial for combat boots, police drones will hover in the sky to keep vigil on movements of the last standing guerrillas holed up in the forested, booby-trapped Abujmarh hills. Till a few years ago, Maoists would step out from their hideouts in Gadchiroli to observe August 15 as 'Kala Diwas' or Black Day, hoist black flags in villages and set ablaze tricolours. Here guns boomed, guerrilla kangaroo courts flourished and govt's footprint was non-existent. This year, Kawande in a true sense, will observe its first Independence Day. And this was possible after C-60 commandos and Central paramilitary troopers decimated Maoists on the foothills of Abujmarh and dismantled their 'janatana sarkar'. The Kawande police post, nestled in dense jungles of Bhamragarh taluka in Gadchiroli, will organise a historic flag hoisting on its newly opened premises in March this year. Setting up the post proved a game changer with Devendra Fadnavis becoming the first Maharashtra chief minister to step into the remotest tip of the Red Corridor. Constructed in an unbelievable 48 hours, the police post at Kawande, equipped with Wi-Fi, a water purification plant, and bulletproof fortifications, stands as a stamp of state authority in this remote corner. This was the seventh post opened in two years, signalling a steady erosion of Maoist influence in Gadchiroli. The hoisting of the tricolour will mark a symbolic triumph over decades of Maoist dominance here, replacing their black flags, said SP Gadchiroli Neelotpal. "Relentless operations by C-60 commandos and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were instrumental in this transformation," he said. The encounter in May, when 200 C-60 commandos dismantled a Maoist camp in Abujmarh, significantly weakened the rebels' Bhamragarh dalam, which operated in Kawande and surrounding areas. The operation yielded weapons, detonators, and Maoist literature, underscoring the rebels' intent to disrupt the region. Bloodstains at the site suggested casualties, though the Maoists fled, exploiting the rugged terrain. With security fortified, the region is poised for better roads, education, and health facilities, long denied by the rebels. As the tricolour rises, Kawande stands testimony to the resilience of local tribals and the courage of commandos, most of whom are sourced from Gadchiroli's tribal hamlets. Independence Day: 5 Shaurya Chakras for war on terror & Naxals

NEW DELHI: Three CRPF personnel who displayed exemplary courage and resilience during encounters with terrorists in J&K shall receive Shaurya Chakra. Two other police personnel named for Shaurya Chakra this Independence Day eve are anti-Naxal encounter specialists of Chhattisgarh Police - inspectors Laxman Kewat and Rameshwar Prasad Deshmukh. On Thursday, home ministry also announced 1,090 police medals, including 233 for gallantry, for personnel of police, fire, home guard, civil defence, and correctional services. As many as 99 police personnel were picked for the President's Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM) and 758 for Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM). While two CRPF Shaurya Chakra awardees - constables Sanjay Tiwari and Feda Hussain - had engaged in a fierce terrorist encounter in Srinagar on Nov 2, 2024, and neutralised hardcore terrorists despite being injured, constable Saddam Hussain had killed a foreign terrorist three days later in a critical engagement with terrorists in Bandipora. Among 1,090 medals announced on Thursday, J&K police lead the table with 143 medals, followed by UP police with 95, CRPF with 82, BSF with 67, Maharashtra police with 49, Intelligence Bureau with 31, Gujarat police with 23, Andhra police with 22, and CBI with 21 medals. As many as 18 medals were announced for Delhi Police, including three PSM and 15 MSM. Among the 233 personnel honoured for bravery, 127 (or over 54%), are from J&K police, 20 from CRPF, 17 from UP police, 16 from BSF, 14 from Chhattisgarh police, nine from Odisha police, seven each from Maharashtra police and Bihar police, five from Jharkhand police, three from Assam police, and one from Telangana police. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo Also, six fire personnel from Delhi, J&K and Maharashtra and a home guard/civil defence personnel from UP have been picked for gallantry medals. While 152 gallantry medals honour actions in Jammu and Kashmir , 54 were announced for brave acts in Left-wing extremism-hit areas, three in the North-East and 24 in other regions. Five gallantry awards will be conferred posthumously. Twelve of the 14 gallantry medal awardees from Chhattisgarh police are personnel of District Reserve Guard (DRG), which comprises mostly surrendered and former Maoists. DRG has been instrumental in blowing the cover of senior Maoist figures and has been in the lead during anti-Maoist operations in Chhattisgarh. In fact, it were DRG personnel who neutralised top Maoist Basavaraju in May this year. The awards this year, though, are operations undertaken in 2020, 2021 and 2023. Senior Chhattisgarh police officer Sunil Sharma (IPS), who as Sukma superintendent of police had led an operation that resulted in neutralisation of two Maoists, is also on the 2025 gallantry medal list.
