How Patina Miller, of Starz's ‘Power' Series, Spends Her Sundays

New York Times01-03-2025

Patina Miller may play a fearless New York City drug queenpin inspired by 50 Cent's mother on television, but for a long time, something scared her: having a child of her own.
'I thought maybe I wouldn't be good at it,' said Ms. Miller, 40, who plays the indomitable Raquel Thomas on the crime drama 'Power Book III: Raising Kanan.' (The fourth season premieres Friday on Starz.)
'I was always afraid of holding other people's babies because I thought I'd break them,' she said.
But now that she is a mother — to a 7-year-old daughter, Emerson Harper Mars, with her husband, the venture capitalist David Mars — she couldn't imagine her life any other way.
'Sundays are about being comfy, being with family,' said Ms. Miller, whose 15-year-old niece, Alanna Miller, also lives with her. She added, 'It's nice to sit and talk to each other without being on our phones.'
Ms. Miller was born in Pageland, S.C., and raised by a single mother who encouraged her love for gospel music. She has lived in New York since 2007, when she moved from South Carolina after college and subsequently landed her breakout role as the nightclub singer Deloris Van Cartier in the Broadway adaptation of 'Sister Act.' She won a Tony Award in 2013 for her performance as a circus artist in the musical 'Pippin.'
She has called the Upper West Side home for the past three years. Her family lives in a brownstone between Central Park and Riverside Park with their English bulldog, Maddie.
RISE AND RUN I try to sleep in a little bit, ideally until 9, but sometimes only until 7:30 or 8. It depends on where I'm at in marathon training. Sundays are my long run day, and that can be anywhere from six to 20 miles.
WAKE UP, SLEEPYHEAD I'll make sure my daughter is up and ready and make her breakfast. She loves oatmeal with some berries and banana, maybe a yogurt pouch on the side. She's a very simple girl in the morning.
I can't eat a big meal before a run, so I'll have oatmeal, a cup of mixed berries with some maple syrup and a little bit of protein powder. I try not to do too much protein, just because it can bug your stomach if you're not careful.
MARATHON MIND-SET In 2021, one of my trainers, Beth from The Limit, ran marathons, and was like, 'You should do it.' So I signed up randomly, out of the blue, and then was like, 'Oh, my God, what did I just do?'
I remember just walking up a block cursing at myself, like, 'I can't do this,' and then giving myself a pep talk, like, 'I can do anything.' I kept at it, and the next thing you know, I was running four miles, and then I was running six, and then I was running eight, 10. And then my birthday happened to be the same day as the 2022 New York City Marathon. And the thing about me is, I love a challenge. Ever since then, I'm just like: 'How can I be better? How can I get faster? How can I be stronger?'
CONQUERING CENTRAL PARK My nemesis is Central Park. It's sneakily super difficult to run. There are the rolling hills, and it's such a hard six-mile path. It's so good for you, though. When I just want to feel good about myself, I love running on the West Side Highway, all the way up past 125th, or all the way down to South Street Seaport.
CHARACTER STUDY I have an R&B Sunday run playlist, but then when I really need some motivation, I listen to hip-hop, rap, Top 40, things with a real good beat. Eminem's 'Lose Yourself' is a really good one for Central Park. And sometimes I will go into character and use those moments to memorize lines.
BACON AND EGGS My daughter goes to swim class at Asphalt Green on the Upper East Side. Then we'll meet my husband and niece for brunch. We love Friedman's; The Smith; ABC Kitchen. We'll order pancakes, bacon, eggs, avocado. My daughter's favorite is the biscuits with butter and jelly at Chez Nick.
STUDIO TIME I go to a studio called Invite Only, which is down in Chelsea in my old neighborhood. I'm in the process of working on an E.P. The weekends become that time where I can kind of switch gears creatively.
I've been waiting a long time to do music of my own because I wanted to have something to say. There's Afrobeat, there's R&B, there's a little bit of rock, pop, soul. It's an E.P. to introduce my sound — me as an artist, me as a vocalist, me as a writer. I cannot wait until it's done. I'm frightened, obviously, with putting my baby out in the world, but I'm having a really, really good time in the studio working on it.
FAMILY DINNER We usually eat around 7:30 p.m. During the week, we're blessed to have a nanny, because I'm not able to cook when I'm working, so weekends are for me to kind of pull it out. I make a really good salmon; it's very simple, because my daughter is very picky. And then steamed broccoli or roasted broccoli — she likes the crunch — and jasmine rice on the side. My niece also loves to experiment in the kitchen, so we love taste-testing all of her food!
MOVIE NIGHT My daughter is into anything animated — she's an 'Elemental' girl. And she just saw 'Dog Man' and 'Moana 2' at the theater. We catch movies whenever we can. She's a huge 'Bluey' fan, so we might end up watching that, too.
JUST FOR US My husband and I like to put our daughter to bed together. We love to read to her, and she reads to us. Work sometimes bleeds into the weekend and you have to make sacrifices, but I always make sure I'm back enough to have time with her.
And my niece as well. I'll brush her hair, and she'll tell me what's going on, or what she's excited about for school the next day. She loves to craft, so maybe we work on something, or sing songs together. I'm really just trying to pour into her.
SKIN CARE AND STRETCH I'll take a hot shower, do some stretching. I'm really into skin care — I'll wash my face, do my toner, put on a mask. I'll put on a hydrating serum, let that sit, and put on another serum for spots, or if I have some discoloration. And then I put on oil — I love The Beauty Sandwich, especially their Snatching Sauce. Their founder, Iván Pol, does the most amazing facials. Any time he's in New York, I see him — along with every other actress in Hollywood, it seems.
WINDING DOWN I'll climb into bed around midnight, but I'm not ready to fall asleep yet! I'm scrolling my phone, seeing what else I can put in my Amazon cart.
I finally drift off to rain sounds. It's so soothing.

Gayle King Reveals Her 2 Picks to Be Named PEOPLE's Sexiest Man Alive: ‘They're Really Good Human Beings' (Exclusive)

Gayle King revealed her two picks to be named PEOPLE's Sexiest Man Alive in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE at the opening night of Call Me Izzy on Broadway in New York City on Thursday, June 12 She described both of her picks as "really good human beings" The CBS News journalists also said "there are lots [of worthy men] to choose from" for the annual titleGayle King is singling out two actors she believes deserve to wear the PEOPLE's Sexiest Man Alive crown. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE at the opening night of Call Me Izzy on Broadway in New York City on Thursday, June 12, the CBS News journalist said that while "there are lots [of worthy men] to choose from," she'd love to see a certain Bridgerton leading man tapped for the honor. "I wouldn't be mad if Regé-Jean Page got it. I wouldn't be mad," she says, referring to the 37-year-old British actor, who rose to fame playing love interest Simon, the Duke of Hastings, in season 1 of the Netflix period drama. King also tossed out another name: Brandon Sklenar, star of It Ends with Us, 1923 and more. "Brandon Sklenar, also nice," she says of the 34-year-old actor. "Because I've met them, and in addition to looking good, I think they're really good human beings," she continues of both actors. "That to me matters more than anything, does more than anything. Because good looks come and go, but your character and a big heart doesn't go." King isn't the first celebrity to share her votes for the SMA title. In January, Today co-host Savannah Guthrie asked Will Ferrell and his You're Cordially Invited costar Reese Witherspoon about the Elf star potentially campaigning for the annual honor. "Again. I mean, I missed out last year," Ferrell, 57, joked. Asked why she believes Ferrell would make a good cover star, Witherspoon, 49, replied, " 'Cause I mean, who else would it be? I can't think of anybody!" Also in January, Matthew McConaughey put in a little plug for fellow actor Anthony Hopkins. At the time, the Interstellar star shared a carousel of photos on Instagram of himself posing with various celebrity friends at the 2025 Joy Awards in Saudi Arabia. He captioned a shot of himself and Hopkins, 87: "It's past time this Sir is Peoples Sexiest Man Alive." Last year's SMA title was bestowed on John Krasinski. As the Office alum prepares to pass the torch to the 2025 honoree later this year, he recently shared some advice for his successor. From the Archives: Robert De Niro's Directorial Debut

'De Niro Direct,' by Julia Reed, was originally published in the September 1993 issue of Vogue. For more of the best from Vogue's archive, sign up for our Nostalgia newsletter here. Robert De Niro is in a sound booth at Forty-ninth and Broadway with Lillo Brancato, the sixteen-year-old star of his new movie, and they are looping lines. Which is to say that Lillo is repeating lines he has already said when they were actually shooting the film, but he is saying them clearer this time, better, more like De Niro wants them. De Niro is pacing around drinking coffee (double espresso with five sugars), tearing bread off a baguette left over from lunch (a meal he almost never eats), and he does not take his eyes off the scene on the screen in front of him or his actor, who has spent the morning beeping himself on his brand-new beeper and who has informed me that "there's nothing better than going out at night and coming back home when the sun is coming up." The movie, A Bronx Tale, is a charming coming-of-age story about a boy (Lillo) torn between the influence of his hardworking father, a bus driver played by De Niro, and Sonny, a glamorous mobster played by Chazz Palminteri, who also wrote the film. It is De Niro's directorial debut and Lillo's acting debut—unless you count the fact that he has spent his entire life doing De Niro imitations, stuffing orange peels in his mouth to do Jake LaMotta because he didn't have a mouthpiece, growing his hair out and slicking it back to do Cape Fear's Max Cady. A year ago he was a kid hanging out on Jones Beach. Now he's a movie star having trouble paying attention. "Fight the medication, Lillo," De Niro says, grinning. "I'm gonna get you some other stuff. Ritalin. It'll focus your attention." He is joking, of course, but I suggest to the sound tech that maybe Ritalin is responsible for De Niro's own almost superhuman focus. "Nah," says the sound man: "Bob's on espresso." He needs it. So far he has spent $21 million on this movie, originally a one-man show by Palminteri, an actor who was having trouble getting parts so he wrote eighteen for himself in one sitting. De Niro saw the play in Los Angeles on the advice of his trainer and took a flier—Palminteri had gotten seven-figure offers for his script, but only De Niro would guarantee him the role of Sonny. "The thing I'll tell you about Bob De Niro," says Palminteri, "is that he is a real man. In my neighborhood, we'd say Bob is a stand-up guy. When he gives you his word, that's it, period. He looked me in the eye and said, 'You will play the part of Sonny and no one else will touch the script.' And that's what happened."

I'm a Travel Writer, and This Is My Go-to NYC Staycation Itinerary—and the Stylish Outfits to Match

As much as I love experiencing different cultures and traversing new landscapes, there's something special about exploring your own backyard. Staycations are quickly becoming one of my favorite ways to relax, and I recently spent a week experiencing my own city as a tourist. I live in NYC, so there's plenty to explore. Throughout my week-long staycation, I visited museums, parks, landmarks, and more, and I gained a greater appreciation for the city along the way. Now, I'm revealing my five go-to staycation itineraries, along with the stylish summer outfits to match. Whether you're visiting NYC or romanticizing your own city, keep reading for elevated outfits to make you feel like a jet-setting traveler, wherever you are. Whenever I have a few days to kill, I make it a priority to see some of the world's best theater at Broadway and off-Broadway shows. To pass the time before the show, I'd head to Soho for some shopping. Soho has some of the most beautiful buildings (and people) New York has to offer—and near countless shops. On my ideal staycation, I'd partake in quite a bit of retail therapy before heading to the Theater District for an early dinner and a show. This itinerary calls for a slightly dressier outfit, but comfort is still key. After all, this day entails plenty of walking, standing in lines, and sitting for extended periods. The Prettygarden Skirt Set is ideal, thanks to the stretchy, comfortable fabric. I'd pair it with trendy fisherman sandals, plus an oversized tote to help carry the day's inevitable purchases. This outfit looks elevated enough for one of NYC's most fashionable neighborhoods, but it's breezy and cozy to carry you through the day's activities. The Met's free date night is one of NYC's best-kept secrets. On Fridays and Saturdays, you can head to The Met for live music, drinks, and world-renowned art. Plus, during the summer, you can grab a drink on the museum's Roof Garden and soak in beautiful views of the city. I'd recommend dressing up for this event, and I found the perfect outfit at Amazon. The Drop's Dia Midi Tank Dress is simple, elevated, and comfortable enough that you won't be fussing throughout the night. I'd pair it with one of NYC's most popular shoes, slingback heels, and I love this pair that adds an edge to an otherwise classic ensemble. Don't forget to bring a simple handbag and throw a cardigan over your shoulders in case it gets chilly in the exhibits. Hudson River Park has some of Manhattan's most scenic views. The park stretches four miles of riverfront space, with an extensive walking path and beautiful piers. I love to start at Pier 97 and work my way down, stopping by the Little Island, Pier 45, and more sunny destinations on the way. Once you reach the bottom of Manhattan, you can hop on a ferry to Ellis Island—or just soak up views of Lady Liberty from Battery Park. To stay comfortable throughout this scenic walk, I always wear a sporty ensemble. The Crz Yoga tennis skirt is perfect for the occasion, with a 'buttery soft' and 'lightweight' fabric. I'd snag the coordinating racerback tank and pair the look with a hands-free belt bag that reviewers call a 'perfect dupe' for pricier bands. Since I rack up thousands of steps on this walking path, I always opt for a pair of comfy walking shoes—and the podiatrist-recommended Brooks Ghost 16s are a stylish and comfortable choice. The Grand Bazaar is one of my favorite spots to visit on Sunday mornings. This shopping market is filled with clothing, art, antiques, food trucks, and more, and I always find something worth taking home. Afterwards, I'd head a few blocks east to spend some time in the sun at Central Park. Who said you have to go south to catch a tan? While most New Yorkers don't have easy access to a beach, some areas of Central Park are packed with sunbathers in the summer. I love the Berlook Floral One-piece, because it can easily be camouflaged with a casual outfit, and no one will guess you're wearing a swimsuit. I'd pair it with Chartou's Cotton-linen Drawstring Pants and a breezy button-down. Finish off the look with platform sandals for a market-ready outfit that can easily transition to sunbathing later in the day. Maybe it's just because I'm a Grey's Anatomy fan, but there's something so magical about ferries. Every time I get to cross into Brooklyn on a ferry, it's a treat—and this itinerary is packed with scenic views, on and off the boat. Hop on the South Brooklyn Route of the NYC ferry and get off at Brooklyn Bridge Park for casual dining options and an unbelievable view of Manhattan's skyline. Afterwards, you can check out Dumbo's beautiful cobblestone streets, flea markets, and art galleries. It's truly one of the most gorgeous parts of the city. Keep things casual for this day of sightseeing—but be prepared for candid photo opportunities. I'd pair relaxed barrel jeans with a summery eyelet top for a look that's equally comfy and stylish. I'd complete this ensemble with simple black flats that 'can be worn all day without pain or blisters', plus a classic straw tote that looks so summery. Love a great deal?
