Kolkata/Berhampore: Odisha has released 403 out of 447 Bengali-speaking migrants it had detained, suspecting them of being illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, over the past three days.
Most of the Bengali-speaking migrant workers have been released, said Trinamool MP Samirul Islam, who chairs the state migrant workers' welfare board.
The migrant workers, most of them from Birbhum and Murshidabad and some from South 24 Parganas, had been mostly picked up by the Jharsuguda police, according to Islam.
Samiul Sk from Shahjadpur village in Murshidabad was among those detained. His father, Sariful Seikh, said his son had been detained at Pahala police station in Odisha's Khurda district along with five other teenaged migrant workers who worked as masons.

The Calcutta High Court was informed on Friday that after it asked the Odisha govt to furnish details of two people it had detained, they were released. Raghunath Chakraborty, the lawyer representing these two migrant workers, told the HC: "We have received information from the person concerned that detainees have been released from Odisha after the matter was filed in the HC. They have come back to their homes. But it needs to be determined whether such detentions are legal.
"
Krishnanagar MP Mahua Moitra wrote on X that all detainees from Nadia, barring two, were released. "Robiul Sheikh and Mohir Munshi with verified documents are still being detained illegally by Odisha only because of a Bangladeshi phone number on their phones! Is that even a crime?" she wrote.
Meanwhile, Islam took a dig at BJP Bengal co-in-charge Amit Malviya for claiming that 335 of those detained had fake documents. "Now it's your responsibility to submit proof about all these individuals you were claiming to be Bangladeshis," he said.

Danger of ‘mass disenfranchisement': In meet with EC, CPI(ML) demands halt to Bihar SIR
Highlighting what it described as the danger of 'mass disenfranchisement', the Communist Party of India (Marxist Leninist) Liberation Tuesday demanded that the Election Commission stop its ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar. A delegation of CPI (ML) leaders met the three-member commission on Tuesday, as a part of the EC's ongoing initiative to interact with national and state parties on the issue. The SIR was started in Bihar with the EC's order on June 24. As per the order, all 7.8 crore electors of Bihar have to fill enumeration forms by July 25 in order to be included in the draft roll to be published on August 1. In addition, for all those added to the rolls after January 1, 2003, the EC has asked for documents to establish eligibility, including citizenship. 'On the basis of our experience of the first four weeks of the SIR drive in Bihar, we are afraid that mass disenfranchisement remains a very real danger for Bihar's poor, women, migrant workers and young electors, with all its alarming consequences,' the CPI (ML) said in a memorandum submitted to the EC. The party said that a large number of electors do not have the 11 documents listed by the EC, which do not include Aadhaar and voter ID. 'Even applying for possible documents like domicile certificate or caste certificate has now become inordinately difficult and in all likelihood, millions will not be able to submit any documents unless the EC accepts the Supreme Court suggestion of including Aadhaar cards, ration cards or voter cards. Leaving it to the EROs to decide about all such cases on the basis of local investigations would leave the electoral roll susceptible to all kinds of bias and arbitrary administrative errors and possible manipulations and thus render the integrity of the electoral roll highly suspect,' the party said. Meanwhile, the EC issued a statement Tuesday saying that 90.67% forms had been received so far and 52.30 lakh electors were not found at their addresses.

Chinese actor Zhang Yiyang stabs 16-year-old girlfriend to death after she snubs him, gets executed by firing squad in first-ever celebrity death sentence
Chinese actor and singer Zhang Yiyang became the first celebrity in mainland China to be executed for a violent crime, following his conviction for the premeditated murder of his 16-year-old girlfriend. The 33-year-old was executed by firing squad on December 18, 2024, though news of the execution only became public in July 2025, according to Chinese media and judicial sources. The actor lured his girlfriend to a remote forest in Xingping City under the pretense of celebrating his birthday. When she expressed a desire to end their relationship, he attacked her with a folding knife. The court revealed that Zhang stabbed her multiple times in the neck, severing her carotid artery and windpipe, which led to instant death by hemorrhage and asphyxiation. The brutal assault was described as 'extremely violent, deliberate, and socially harmful.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Dubai villas | search ads Get Deals Undo Zhang then attempted to stage the scene to look like a suicide and fled. He later tried to take his own life at a hotel but survived and was arrested shortly after by local authorities. The execution Zhang's execution, carried out by firing squad, a method still sanctioned under Chinese law, was not publicly disclosed at the time. The case only came to light in July 2025, prompting an outpouring of reactions on Chinese social media platforms such as Weibo and Douban. Live Events Netizens expressed outrage over the fact that Zhang's work, including films and music, remained publicly accessible even after his conviction and execution. Many called for him to be formally added to the government's blacklist of disgraced public figures, which bars artists from being featured in media or earning royalties from their work. While capital punishment remains legal in China for crimes like murder, executions of public figures are exceedingly rare. Zhang's execution signals a harsh precedent, and perhaps a turning point, in how China deals with celebrity crimes. As of now, Chinese authorities have made no formal announcement regarding the removal of Zhang's existing media, nor has his name appeared on official state blacklists. Manipulation and abuse The court also highlighted that Zhang had a long pattern of emotional abuse and psychological manipulation over the victim, including threats of suicide to prevent her from leaving him. Reports indicated that the two had been in a relationship since September 2021, despite the victim being underage. Prosecutors labeled the murder as intentional homicide, arguing that the actor had shown no genuine remorse and had tried to obstruct justice. His appeals to both the provincial High Court and the Supreme People's Court were rejected. Who Was Zhang Yiyang? Zhang Yiyang was a relatively obscure but rising figure in the entertainment world, often referred to as an '18th-tier' actor. He trained under Hong Kong director Li Wenlong and had released a few albums, including Crying Man. He also appeared in low-budget films such as The Sound of Music (音疗大师), which ironically premiered just months after his execution. He was awarded a "Golden Shang New-Star Actor" prize early in his career but never achieved mainstream fame.
