A Filipino tourist was killed in Hong Kong after being hit by a taxi on Tuesday, the Department of Foreign Affairs said.
Citing a report from the Philippine Consulate General, the DFA said the 35-year old man died due to injuries sustained in a vehicular accident in Tsuen Wan West on August 5.
His remains are now in Kwai Chung Public Mortuary and the 80-year-old taxi driver involved in the accident is in police custody.
"The Consulate General offers its deepest condolences to the deceased's family and prays for his eternal rest," the DFA said.
The South China Morning Post said the cab driver told police that he felt dizzy before he crashed his vehicle into a hotel taxi bay.
Police received a report at 1.52 p.m. that a man had been struck by a taxi that veered onto the pavement at a hotel in Yeung Uk Road, the Post said.
DFA spokesperson Angelica Escalona said the consulate is currently assisting the family of the victim and is anticipating their arrival in Hong Kong soon to arrange the shipment of remains back to the Philippines.
"The consulate general is closely coordinating with the Hong Kong Police Force while the official investigation of the case is ongoing," Escalona said. — Michaela Del Callar with Jiselle Casucian/RSJ, GMA Integrated News

Death of 2 navy personnel in Sarangani under probe

The Philippine Navy on Thursday said a thorough investigation is ongoing into the drowning of its two personnel in Maitum, Sarangani Province. 'A thorough investigation is currently underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident,' the Philippine Navy said in a statement. The Philippine Navy mourned the loss of its two personnel who died during a recreational diving activity in Sarangani on Monday. 'We extend our heartfelt condolences to their families and assure them of our full support during this difficult time,' the Philippine Navy said. The military also vowed assistance to their families. 'We are providing full assistance to the bereaved families as part of our commitment to their welfare. Above all, we recognize and honor the service and dedication of our fallen sailors to the country and the Filipino people,' it added. According to the Philippine Navy, the recreational activity was authorized as the involved personnel were on official leave and wellness break. The Philippine Navy said it is reviewing and enhancing its protocols for both recreational and operational diving activities to prevent similar incidents in the future. The victims, aged 48 and 50, were conducting a recreational site diving survey 1.2 nautical miles from the shore. They went missing for more than an hour until they were found floating and unconscious in open water. The two were brought to a hospital but were declared dead upon arrival. Their colleagues believe the two divers reached a deep portion of the sea when they encountered difficulty breathing underwater. —VAL, GMA Integrated News

House QuadComm gets new life in 20th Congress

The House of Representatives has reestablished the House Quad Committee (QuadComm) for the 20th Congress. This developed after the House, via voice vote, adopted House Resolution 106 filed by Manila Rep. Benny Abante, which establishes the mega committee 'to conduct a joint inquiry in need of legislation to address emerging and unresolved issues brought forth by the joint investigation of the previous Quad Committee during the 19th Congress.' The "House QuadComm 2.0" will still be composed of the House Committee on Dangerous Drugs, House Committee on Public Order and Safety, House Committee on Human Rights and the House Committee on Accounts. Abante will still be the chairperson of the House Committee on Human Rights, while the House Committee on Dangerous Drugs is chaired by Bukidnon Rep. Jonathan Keith Flores. The House Committee on Accounts is chaired by Bicol Saro party-list Rep. Terry Ridon, while the House Committee on Public Order and Safety is chaired by Rep. Rolando Valeriano. The House QuadComm in the 19th Congress investigated the drug war deaths during the administration of former President Rodrigo Duterte and the Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators-related crimes. In pushing for QuadComm 2.0 Abante said there remains a lot to be investigated, including the case of over 30 missing sabungeros or cockfight enthusiasts. 'May nagsasabi na pulitika lang ito (Some say its political). But this is not a partisan crusade, Mr. Speaker. This is a moral one. Because murder knows no color but one: red—the color of blood unjustly spilled,' Abante said. The House QuadComm inquiries resulted in the filing of the proposed Anti-Extrajudicial Killing Act and the Civil Forfeiture Act, which Abante said are important in curbing 'impunity and seizing the ill-gotten wealth of those involved in state-sponsored abuses.' –VAL, GMA Integrated News
