NFL analyst names this Rams starter a potential trade candidate
However, with the draft well behind them and the 2025 preseason staring straight ahead, Pro Football Focus' Bradley Locker thinks the Rams could trade one of their starters from the past few years: tight end Tyler Higbee.
Although the Rams have ushered in a new receiving corps in the past few years, Higbee has long been a staple of Sean McVay's offense. At the same time, the team's recent tight end investments could signal that Higbee's time in Los Angeles is nearing its end.
Higbee was effective when on the field last year, turning in a 76.4 PFF overall grade with a 79.1 PFF receiving grade — his best since 2019. But the 32-year-old played only 128 snaps due to a knee injury and is in the final year of his current contract.
The Rams' jubilation in landing second-round tight end Terrance Ferguson is eye-opening, especially because the team has searched for a coveted weapon for multiple offseasons. On top of that, Los Angeles returns Davis Allen (63.3 PFF run-blocking grade) and Colby Parkinson (66.2 PFF pass-blocking grade) as depth behind the newcomer. Los Angeles parted with Cooper Kupp earlier this offseason, and Higbee may be next in line.
Ferguson is most certainly the heir apparent to Higbee's role, with one of Allen or Parkinson sliding in as the run-blocking backup. However, it might be unwise to trade away Higbee before the team really knows what they have in Ferguson.
This past season proved that Allen and Parkinson could not step into a pass-catching role while Higbee was out with injury. So, if Ferguson takes time to develop, the Rams would be back to the same issue that plagued them to start the 2024 season.
Who would want the 32-year-old Higbee, either? Former first-round tight end Noah Fant is a free agent, and the Rams have much more invested in Higbee as a piece of their offensive game plan than any other team. Keeping Higbee for now makes the most sense unless the Rams have a compelling offer on the table.

Best and worst PFF grades from Panthers' preseason loss to Browns
Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales described much of Friday night's defeat to the Cleveland Browns as sloppy. But a handful of his players, at least according to Pro Football Focus, came out looking awfully clean. Here are the best and worst PFF grades for the Panthers from their 30-10 loss in this week's preseason opener . . . Best of the offense 1. LT Ikem Ekwonu: 85.8 2. QB Bryce Young: 85.1 3. WR T.J. Luther: 84.6 4. RG Jarrett Kingston: 79.0 5. WR Jalen Coker: 74.5 Ekwonu allowed zero pressures over eight opportunities. The former sixth overall pick, as usual, did well in the ground game, too—earning a team-best 90.8 grade in run blocking. Young completed four of his six passing attempts for 58 yards and a touchdown. His score, a 5-yarder, found the hands of Coker—who finished with two receptions for 17 yards. Worst of the offense 32. QB Jack Plummer: 49.9 33. WR Xavier Legette: 41.3 34. RT Michael Tarquin: 38.9 35. TE Tyler Mabry: 36.9 36. RT Yosh Nijman: 29.3 Plummer connected on six of his 10 throws for 79 yards. Legette, who was ejected from the game on the second drive, only connected on a few punches of Browns safety Rayshawn Jenkins. Tarquin, for what it's worth, received a 0.0 pass-blocking grade—as he allowed a sack over five chances. Nijman allowed two pressures, a hit and a hurry. Best of the defense 1. OLB Nic Scourton: 91.8 2. DL Bobby Brown III: 91.4 3. DL Sam Roberts: 89.5 4. S Trevian Thomas: 77.3 5. CB Corey Thornton: 76.9 Scourton tallied two pressures (one sack) over eight pass-rushing attempts. The 2025 second-round pick also accounted for two stops in the run game. Brown III, one of Carolina's big free-agent additions from this past spring, notched a team-high five pressures. Worst of the defense 34. OLB D.J. Wonnum: 34.9 35. DL Tershawn Wharton: 32.8 36. ILB Trevin Wallace: 32.3 37. ILB Jon Rhattigan: 29.8 38. ILB Bam Martin-Scott: 29.6 Wharton, another offseason signing, didn't fare as well as Brown. The sixth-year lineman received a team-low 22.9 tackling grade. Martin-Scott also had trouble finishing. Sean McVay: Surgery for Matthew Stafford has not been discussed
Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford was originally supposed to practice on Monday after going through a workout on Saturday. But reporters on the scene noted Stafford was in street clothes to start the session. Head coach Sean McVay told reporters after practice that Stafford's back wasn't feeling good enough for him to practice on Monday. The team will continue to take things with Stafford and his disc issue one day at a time. "We're going to be flexible and fluid," McVay said, via Stu Jackson of the team's website. McVay was asked if surgery is a possibility for Stafford and noted the club has not had that conversation yet. 'There's been a lot of conversations about what's the best method of how we want to approach it," McVay said, via Sarah Barshop of ESPN. "That hasn't been something that comes up.' Stafford has not practiced throughout training camp due to the disc issue. He was able to throw around 60 passes during his workout on Saturday, with McVay noting that Stafford did not have any restrictions on the types of throws. But Stafford's back did not recover well enough for him to practice on Monday. Jimmy Garoppolo has been taking the first-team snaps at quarterback for L.A. with Stafford sidelined.

Dan Orlovsky ranks Matthew Stafford in top 10 of these 3 quarterback traits
Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford heads into the 2025 NFL season as one of the older starters in the league. He's 37, is entering his 17th season and will play for one of the top contenders in the league. Needless to say, he's among the best in the league at certain skill sets. ESPN analyst and ex-NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky (who was also a one-time Rams quarterback and teammate of Matthew Stafford on the Detroit Lions) made his own top 10 rankings before the season, but with his twist: He looked at top 10 starting NFL quarterbacks through the lens of seven traits: arm strength, ball placement, mechanics, decision-making, pocket presence, rushing ability and second-reaction creativity. Each trait got its own top-10 list. Some were similar, some were different. Stafford made the top 10 in four of those seven: arm strength, ball placement, mechanics and decision-making. He ranked fifth in arm strength, sixth in ball placement, third in mechanics and sixth in decision-making. Stafford didn't make the top 10 in second-reaction, rushing or pocket presence. While Stafford didn't make the top 10 for all seven traits, he was among the seven quarterbacks to be in at least four of the lists. Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson made all seven, while Jayden Daniels, Joe Burrow and Patrick Mahomes made six. Stafford tied Justin Herbert with four top 10 traits.
