• A five-member team will study Andhra Pradesh's language policy to guide Karnataka's move to grant Tulu official status
• The government has directed the committee to submit a detailed report within three months
Mangaluru: In a decisive step toward granting official language status to Tulu, the Karnataka government has constituted a committee to study the linguistic policy framework adopted by Andhra Pradesh, particularly its process for declaring an additional official language. The five-member study team, chaired by Gayatri KM, Director of the Department of Kannada and Culture, includes representatives from the Law Department, Personnel and Administrative Reforms Department, and cultural institutions such as the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy and the Yakshagana Academy.
The team is tasked with visiting Andhra Pradesh to gather information on the criteria and administrative procedures the state followed while designating additional official languages. In particular, the committee will assess the scale, scope, and legal modalities involved in implementing a second official language. Tulu, a Dravidian language spoken predominantly in coastal Karnataka and parts of Kerala, has long been at the centre of regional identity and cultural activism.
This is the first time the Karnataka government has initiated a formal policy review toward official recognition. The government has directed the committee to submit a detailed report within three months.

PM to open Yellow Line of Namma Metro today

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Bengaluru on Sunday to inaugurate the much-delayed Yellow Line of Namma Metro between R.V. Road Metro Station and Bommasandra Metro Station, apart from laying the foundation stone for Metro Phase III in the city. He will also flag off a Vande Bharat train between Bengaluru and Belagavi. The Prime Minister's visit comes two days after the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi led a 'Vote Adhikar Rally' in Bengaluru, alleging widespread 'voter fraud' during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. On the eve of the Prime Minister's visit to the city, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday said the State's Law Department would hold an inquiry into the alleged 'voter fraud'. While the Bharatiya Janata Party, both at the Centre and in the State, has been countering these allegations, the Prime Minister is yet to respond on the issue. He will address a public function on the International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore campus, Electronics City, on Sunday, where he will lay the foundation stone for Metro Phase III. Sources in the BJP said he may respond to the Congress' allegations during the speech. This visit comes at a time when the political scene in the State is hotting up and a nine-day Monsoon Session of the State legislature is set to commence from Monday. Mr. Modi's visit is expected to further add to the political heat. Meanwhile, both the Congress and BJP have been trying to take credit over Namma Metro in the city.

Thol Thirumavalavan will disappear from politics if he criticises MGR: EPS

SALEM: general secretary on Saturday said VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan will disappear from the political landscape if he continues to criticise late Tamil Nadu chief minister M G Ramachandran (MGR). Tired of too many ads? go ad free now EPS was reacting to Thirumavalavan's remark at a function in Chennai on Friday that MGR had played a role in bringing Brahminism to the Dravidian movement. "MGR enabled a Brahmin woman ( ) to ascend to the leadership of the Dravidian movement," Thirumavalavan had stated. Palaniswami said Thirumavalavan lacked the credentials to discuss MGR. "MGR is revered as a god by the people of Tamil Nadu. Criticizing someone of that stature will lead to their political disappearance," he said responding to a question by reporters in Salem. EPS emphasized that it was unfeasible to engage in politics based solely on one caste. 'The AIADMK remains a party that transcends caste and religion. Our movement has numerous caste associations and individuals from various religions," he said. "Those who cannot accept this are expressing their anger and hatred through such remarks," he added. It may be noted that Thirumavalavan had also said in the same speech in Chennai that no national party could form a govt in the state after MGR floated a new party (AIADMK). 'More importantly, the BJP could not gain foothold in the state,' he had said.

People criticising MGR will disappear from politics, says Edappadi K. Palaniswami

Former Chief Minister and general secretary of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Saturday, August 9, 2025, said people criticising former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran (MGR) will disappear from politics.. Mr. Palaniswami participated in a function at Omalur in which cadres from various political parties joined AIADMK. Responding to a question from mediapersons on Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader Thol. Thirumavalavan's comment on MGR that he paved the way for Jayalalithaa to become leader of a Dravidian party, Mr. Palaniswami said people saw MGR as god. Those criticising MGR would disappear from politics. 'AIADMK has people from all caste and religion and they stand united,' Mr. Palaniswami added. Regarding the contradictory statements made by left parties and DMK after meeting Chief Minister M.K. Stalin recently on a separate law for honour killings, Mr. Palaniswami said that this showed the problem within the DMK alliance. 'It is unclear whether the DMK alliance will continue for the next eight months or not. As far as AIADMK is concerned, there are eight more months for the elections and a strong alliance will be formed,' he said. Mr. Palaniswami denied to comment on PMK general council meeting, about former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam quitting BJP alliance and bringing former AIADMK leader V.K. Sasikala into AIADMK fold. Earlier, speaking among the cadre, Mr. Palaniswami said that people should compare Salem district before 2011 and after that. During the AIADMK regime, between 2011 and 2021, the district got roads, check dams, and many other infrastructure. The handlooms and power looms did good business. He claimed that weavers were sustaining severe losses under the DMK regime. After AIADMK comes to power, tree climbers will be covered under insurance, and the premium will be paid by the government. They will also be given equipment for tree climbing free of cost, he said. He criticised the DMK government for not completing the remaining 25% of the 100-lake scheme works that was brought in by the AIADMK. After AIADMK comes to power, this scheme work will be completed, and farmers will get water for irrigation. Likewise, Scheduled Castes and poor people who live in huts will be given concrete houses. If they do not have lands, the government will buy land and construct houses for them. For the 2026 Assembly elections, AIADMK will come out with an election manifesto that will make people happy, he added.
