Michelle Ryan reveals reason behind EastEnders return after making Jessie Wallace cry
It was exciting for soap viewers, but Jessie Wallace says she burst into tears when she was reunited with Michelle Ryan. The pair are set to star together again later this month on EastEnders. It follows a fleeting appearance from Michelle, 41, as Zoe earlier this Summer for several episodes to tease her full return to the BBC soap.
'I burst out crying,' Jessie recalled of their first meeting. "We met for a secret dinner date with [executive producer] Ben Wadey and the Slaters. When I saw Michelle, I cried – we were all very emotional. It was nostalgic and lovely.' Wallace also insisted her co-star couldn't be recast for the new storyline. It comes after reports of all the celebrities rumoured to be joining BBC Strictly Come Dancing 2025.
In an interview with Radio Times, she recalled: 'I said to Ben, 'It has to be Michelle. It won't feel right if Zoe is recast.' I wouldn't be able to give my best performance. The audience would feel completely conned.
'I love Michelle and have always been protective over her, perhaps that's natural having played her mum. I'm a mother myself now, which I wasn't when we worked together before, and I'm very protective over my daughter.
'I've changed and so has Kat. I've grown up a lot, and Kat is more responsible now. She's got three boys and is married. Kat would die for her children, she wasn't allowed to be a parent when she had Zoe but has become a great mum. It's one of the qualities I love most about her.'
Actress Michelle returned to play Zoe Slater after being away from the soap for 20 years in June. Around 2.2 million people watched her shock appearance on the BBC One soap, which unusually had not been made available on iPlayer earlier in the day. She will now return for more episodes in August.
The character is best remembered for the 2001 cliffhanger in which she screamed at her sister Kat Slater "you ain't my mother!" who fired back with the iconic twist: "Yes I am."
Michelle described returning to the show, where she last starred in June 2005, as feeling "like coming home'.
Paying tribute to her co-star she said: 'Jessie is one of the best actresses I've ever worked with.'The rapport we have and our friendship off screen as well, it all just feeds into that mother-daughter bond. On set, it's like having someone in your corner all the time and always knowing that I'll be fine. I can just talk to Jessie. We have a shorthand, and we have a similar kind of view on the characters and their journey.'
Michelle was revealed to viewers at the end of the June episode, making a dramatic reunion with step-father Alfie Moon and cousin Stacey Slater just before the credits. It was the first episode produced by the show's new executive producer Ben Wadey who said the character was on his wish-list of returnees before stepping into the role.
He said: "I was absolutely delighted when Michelle agreed to return, and I'm thrilled to welcome her back to Walford." After leaving the soap in 2005, Michelle made appearances in BBC One shows Merlin, Doctor Who and Jekyll.
She was also cast as the lead in a remake of the 1970s programme The Bionic Woman, which was cancelled by US broadcaster NBC after eight episodes. Speaking candidly in the Radio Times interview she admitted another reason for wanting to come back was regular work.
She said she had loved the freedom of being able to pick jobs and mixing up theatre and film. "But there comes a time when you think, actually, it would be great to have a routine,' she said.
The actress revealed that the invitation to return to Elstree Studios arrived at a time she had been reflecting on her time on the BBC soap with old castmates. She said: "It all happened at the right time. I'd already been thinking about a return because I'd met up with Kacey Ainsworth and Kim Medcalf and we were reminiscing our fond memories of the show.
"It just so happened that at the same time, EastEnders had announced a new Exec who was keen to explore the potential of a return as he was such a massive fan of Zoe and the Slaters.
"I can't say too much as there is a lot of drama to come, but Zoe is a mess. She's not the girl that left Walford twenty years ago, and she's been really struggling on her own."

The star is alleged to have revealed an image of a man's penis on her phone during a casual conversation. Insiders claim the star, who is listed among the BBC's 50 highest-paid employees, asked the young staff member an inappropriate question before showing the picture. In a month's time Brits have been urged to brace themselves for a loud alarm from their mobile phones in a national drill. The system will be tested at 3pm on Sunday, September 7, with millions of phones receiving a message warning of danger to life nearby. Mobiles on 4G and 5G networks will vibrate and emit a loud siren for around 10 seconds - even if they are set on silent, and also see a test message appear on screens, making it clear the alert is a drill. The Home Office said those taken into detention after arriving in Kent yesterday are expected to be sent back to France within a fortnight. In exchange people with a legitimate case to settle in the UK - who have never attempted a small crossing - will be admitted in their place. Ozzy Osbourne's poignant final words about his fans revealed by Sharon – as one of their last ever pics together emerges
SHARON Osbourne has revealed her husband Ozzy's poignant final words about his fans following his farewell Black Sabbath concert. The legend tragically died last month at the age of 76 - just weeks after his swanswong final show with the legendary group. 2 2 Brave Sharon opened up on her husband's final appearance on stage following a glistening musical career. She told Pollstar: "It was the first time, I think, that anybody's gone into retirement and done it, where the show is streamed and it goes to charity. "So it's the first time anybody has said goodnight like that, it's the perfect way, when you've had such a long career, to end it - I never wanted Ozzy to just disappear without some big event. "He [Ozzy] turned around and he said to me that night, he said, 'I had no idea that so many people liked me'." It comes after the first glimpse of the new Ozzy Osbourne documentary was revealed - showing the late rocker and wife Sharon in one of their last images together. The couple are seen smiling as they relax at home with their pet pomeranians as part of the upcoming BBC One show, Ozzy Osbourne: Coming Home. The singer, who passed away last month aged 76 after a long battle with Parkinson's, is seen leaning into his beloved wife with a walking stick in his hand and a head of rapidly greying hair. The one-off, hour long documentary features extensive access to the family over a period of three years, leading up to his final Black Sabbath concert in Birmingham on July 5. Clare Sillery, BBC Head of Commissioning, Documentaries, says: 'We are honoured to have had the opportunity to film with Ozzy and his family. 'The film captures an intimate glimpse into their journey as they prepare to return to the UK. It features family moments, humour, reflection and shows the enduring spirit that made Ozzy a global icon. 'We hope it brings comfort and joy to Ozzy's fans and viewers as they remember and celebrate his extraordinary life.' Yesterday, The Sun exclusively revealed how the filmmakers were in a race with Paramount+, who have their own show about the Prince of darkness in the pipeline. And the BBC appear to have pipped them to the post, with their documentary going out on August 18 - nearly two months before the rival production is due to drop on the streaming service. Coming Home started filming prior to Ozzy's Parkinson's diagnosis and was originally called Home to Roost as it was just going to chart the Osbourne's return to the UK from LA. But the cameras were allowed to continue rolling to chart the heartbreaking rollercoaster ride the family would go on, with daughter Kelly remarking in one scene in the film: 'Iron man wasn't really made of iron.'

Former Strictly pro calls for major shake-up ahead of new series
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info A former Strictly Come Dancing professional has revealed his enthusiasm for witnessing an all-stars edition of the programme. Ian Waite, who graced the BBC's Saturday night sensation from 2004 to 2010, has floated the idea that a special series featuring fan-favourite pairs who have already appeared on the show could be a major draw for the audience. During an exclusive conversation with BANG Showbiz, Ian opened up about the potential for such a series. He said: "It's definitely something that they could look into because there's so much nostalgia." Ian, who during his tenure on Strictly Come Dancing was paired with well-known figures like Zoe Ball, Denise Lewis and singer Mica Paris, fondly reflected on his previous collaborations. (Image: BBC) He nostalgically recalled his time on the show, commenting: "Everybody loves the old pros from Strictly and the nostalgia that goes around it with certain couples, let's say Darren (Bennett) and Jill Halfpenny and me and Zoe Ball, Vincent (Simone) with Rachel Stevens," reports Wales Online. Convinced that the return of celebrated partnerships would captivate viewers, Ian remarked: "There's a lot of couples that could possibly come back and yeah, an all-stars would be a great thing to do I think." Despite the recent issues that have cast a shadow over the show, including the complaints made by Amanda Abbington about her professional partner Giovanni Pernice in the 2023 season, Ian remains hopeful for the future of Strictly Come Dancing. Giovanni has since left the pro line-up, alongside Graziano Di Prima after a BBC investigation into the show. (Image: Getty) Ian believes that the introduction of new safeguarding measures will help prevent similar incidents. Reflecting on his time on the show, he remarked: "This is an isolated case I think. In general the pros are really professional and really hard-working. In my experience, we've all worked really hard, we've all done competitions, we're all at the top of our game and that's why we're on Strictly. "Hopefully the safeguarding is in place now so that that won't happen again and I think that's the best for everybody really because it protects not only the celebrities but it protects the pros - because who's to say we won't be abused." Ian is currently taking part in The Return of the Legends tour with fellow former Strictly stars Brendan Cole, James Jordan, Pasha Kovalev, and Vincent Simone. (Image: BBC) He has been taken aback by the strong sense of brotherhood they've formed, despite their naturally competitive natures. He shared: "That's what's been so great, we've got this really great bromance backstage. "I wasn't really sure whether we'd all be able to bond because we've all done our own shows and been very successful performing in our shows. "We weren't sure whether we'd be able to get on but actually it's like a proper bromance backstage and we all love each other. We all appreciate each other." The Return of the Legends tour is set to grace the stages of Llandudno's Venue Cymru and Cardiff's New Theatre later this year. Strictly Come Dancing returns to BBC One and iPlayer later this year.
