GRS accuses paper of unethical reporting

Kota Kinabalu: The Star has been accused of trying to undermine the ruling Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition by claiming that several component leaders were caught off guard by announcement of an electoral pact with Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the imminent State election. GRS Treasurer-General Ardino Diris regretted, Monday, that the peninsula paper's report was based solely on unnamed sources. 'It is inappropriate and unethical to publish a report based on anonymous sources, as if it reflects the collective position of the coalition. GRS has always practised consultation and discussion in making key decisions, including electoral cooperation,' he said in a statement Monday. He said GRS Chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor's announcement that the cooperation with PH had been discussed was accurate and reflected the reality of internal deliberations within GRS. 'As a mature coalition, GRS would never make a major announcement without going through a strategic discussion process involving the coalition's leadership. 'Therefore, any anonymous personal views do not represent the official stance of the component parties,' he said. He stressed that GRS would not succumb to outside pressure but remain committed to prioritising the interests of the people and political stability in Sabah ahead of the 17th State Election (PRN17). 'We must move as a united team. The strategic cooperation with PH is aimed at ensuring Sabah continues to be governed by a stable, inclusive and progressive government. Division will only harm the people,' he emphasised. On claims that Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star), Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) and United Sabah Nationa Organisation (Usno) were more inclined to see GRS contest the election solo, Ardino said differing views in politics were normal but all parties remained committed to the spirit of consensus within GRS. 'GRS has never silenced differing opinions. However, once a joint decision is made, all parties respect it and lend their full support for our collective success,' he said. On Sunday, Hajiji, who is also Chief Minister, announced that consensus had been reached between GRS and PH to face PRN17 together, as a move to strengthen the current government bloc which is stable and trusted by the people. GRS, led by Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) includes PBS, Star, SAPP, Usno, Parti Cinta Sabah (PCS), Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah (Harapan Rakyat). PETALING JAYA : Sabah Umno says it's ready to go solo in the upcoming state election after Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) announced an electoral pact with Pakatan Harapan. Sabah Umno chief Bung Moktar Radin mocked the GRS-PH cooperation as a 'panic pact' and said the state chapter will not work with dishonest and insincere coalitions. 'An electoral pact must be built on sincerity and integrity, not just seat-sharing and candidate selection,' he said, according to The Borneo Post. He reportedly said the GRS-PH pact was a last-minute alliance forged simply to prevent seat clashes, describing it as a 'beautifully disguised panic pact'. 'Sabah Barisan Nasional will not be part of any arrangement lacking genuine unity,' said Bung, the Sabah BN chief. In May, the unity government's secretariat announced that BN and PH would work together in the 17th Sabah state election, which is due by the end of the year. While Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim hoped that all three coalitions would work together for the polls, Bung said Sabah BN would only consider cooperation with GRS after the outcome of the state election. GRS chairman Hajiji Noor then announced last month that the Sabah coalition and PH had agreed to form an alliance for the polls. This was confirmed by Sabah PKR chief Mustapha Sakmud. BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi later reiterated that the coalition's pact with PH was 'locked in', indicating that BN and GRS were likely to clash in the upcoming state election. On Sunday, Zahid urged Sabah Umno not to completely shut the door on potential allies, saying 'there may be friends among enemies'.

Govt mulls new law to tackle online drug sales
KAJANG: The government is reviewing the need to amend existing laws or introduce a new act to combat the growing trend of drug sales conducted via online platforms. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the matter has been raised at the Cabinet Committee on Combating Drug Abuse, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. 'In the past, this method of selling didn't exist. Now, buyers place orders online, so we need to revisit the legal and regulatory framework to strengthen it,' he told a press conference yesterday after closing the i-Deen recovery programme at the National Anti-Drugs Agency (Nada) headquarters in Kajang. Also present were Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Shamsul Anuar Nasarah, Nada director-general Datuk Ruslin Jusoh, Home Ministry secretary-general Datuk Awang Alik Jeman and Federal Narcotics Crime Investigation Department director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan. Saifuddin said the issue of the sale of drugs online is complex and involves multiple agencies. 'For instance, the supply of drugs falls under the Home Ministry but when transactions occur on digital platforms, it involves the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry. 'If they use e-commerce platforms such as Shopee, detection is relatively easier. But when they operate through social media channels like WhatsApp or Facebook, enforcement becomes more difficult,' he said, adding that the delivery process adds another layer of challenge. He said the trend of selling drugs online is rising and deeply worrying, as these transactions are discreet and harder for authorities to detect. 'We are aware of the issue. That's why the government is currently reviewing existing legislation to ensure it stays relevant with evolving modus operandi.' The Cabinet committee on drug issues meets three times a year, with the most recent meeting held in June. Saifuddin said the proposal to address the issue was tabled during the last meeting as an information paper. 'No decision has been finalised yet. Discussions are ongoing, but our direction is clear – we will either amend current laws or introduce a new act specifically to tackle online drug transactions.' theSun had earlier reported that the Magic Mushroom liquid – laced with synthetic drugs – is being sold online for as low as RM1 per drop, making it easily accessible to youths and first-time users. Saifuddin also said Nada aims to achieve an 80% recovery rate among drug addicts receiving treatment at its centres. 'Currently, recovery rate stands at 79%. The agency is targeting 80% by next year.' Earlier, in his speech, Ruslin said the i-Deen programme is part of Nada's ongoing rehabilitation efforts. The event featured three competitions – Quran memorisation (hafazan), Quran recitation (tilawah) and nasyid – involved patients from Nada treatment centres nationwide. 'The rehab process at Nada is continuous. The programme aims to produce religious role models among recovering addicts, helping to prepare them for reintegration into society.'

Malaysia, Philippines boost ASEAN cooperation for regional stability
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and the Philippines are committed to strengthening strategic cooperation to ensure a more peaceful and united future for ASEAN, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. In a Facebook post tonight, Anwar said the commitment was among the matters discussed during a phone conversation with Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr today. 'The discussion also touched on peace and harmony in international waters and border areas, which are our shared priorities for regional stability,' said the Prime Minister. Anwar said he also shared positive developments regarding the border negotiations between Thailand and Cambodia, which are expected to be finalised this Thursday through the consensus of the two countries' defence ministers during the Extraordinary General Border Committee (GBC) meeting here. The Prime Minister said the development marked another step forward in realising ASEAN's aspirations of becoming a peaceful, stable and prosperous region. Cambodian Defence Minister General Tea Seiha and acting Thai Defence Minister General Natthaphon Narkphanit, along with armed forces chiefs and government representatives of both countries, are expected to attend the GBC meeting. Thailand and Cambodia had agreed to implement a ceasefire effective midnight on July 28 following a special meeting chaired by Anwar at the Seri Perdana Complex in Putrajaya. - Bernama
