BBC drama Mix Tape will have Netflix One Day fans hooked
Romance lovers get ready as the BBC has just announced a brand new drama that promises to tug at the heartstrings of viewers. Titled Mix Tape, the four-part series sounds like the ideal watch for fans of hit Netflix show One Day, offering a similar emotional journey through love, time and second chances.
The series has been adapted from Jane Sanderson's acclaimed novel of the same name, and the show is set to premiere on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer later this summer.
With a story that spans decades and continents, it's already gaining widespread attraction, having picked up the TV Spotlight Audience Award at SXSW 2025.
So, what can viewers expect from this highly anticipated series?
What is Mix Tape about?
The official synopsis reads: "The four-part series follows Daniel and Alison, moving between their teenage romance in 1989 Sheffield and the modern-day reality of their adult relationships living on opposite sides of the world."
Much like the beloved characters Emma and Dex from One Day, Mix Tape explores a deep and emotional connection between two people who find their lives taking very different paths. But fate has other plans.
The main characters Daniel and Alison are separated as they build completely different lives on opposite sides of the world with new partners.
"The pair reconnect through a song from their shared past and explore their burning curiosity to understand if this is the love, and the life, they were meant to have," the synopsis continues.
The series stars Teresa Palmer, known for her roles in The Clearing and The Fall Guy, as Alison and Jim Sturgess, known for his roles in Across The Universe and Cloud Atlas, as Daniel. Their younger selves are played by Bridgerton's Florence Hunt and new-comer Rory Walton-Smith - who will be playing his first mainstream role.
The show was filmed in locations in Dublin, Ireland and Sydney, Australia, and the series promises a romance "packed with emotion" set against a fantastic soundtrack which will transport you back to the 80s.
"Mix Tape will take viewers back in time to that intoxicating feeling of first love [and be] a classic all-encompassing romance set to a banging nostalgic soundtrack," producers told Variety.

Mix Tape will be available to watch on BBC iPlayer and BBC Two later this summer.

The former footballer, 64, who left the BBC One sports show in May, said he was excited and 'can't wait' to host The Box. I've always felt right at home in the box on a football pitch and whilst this is a different proposition, the fundamentals are similar. 'The contestants will have to quickly and masterfully work out how each game works, whilst also trying to get ahead of the competition to take control. 'It's going to be unpredictable and thrilling to watch, and I'm excited that I get to have a front row seat to all the action.' Katie Rawcliffe, director of entertainment, reality and daytime commissioning at ITV, said: 'Gary is the perfect fit for The Box, an entertaining, exhilarating and immersive new format.' Dan Adamson, chief content officer at production company Twofour, added: 'We're delighted to be making The Box with ITV and Seefood TV. 'From the first time we saw those iconic yellow boxes open in an incredible location we were hooked. Now, with Gary on board, we have the ideal master of ceremonies to make this real event telly, he is after all a man who knows what it's like under pressure in the box. The Box was first launched on TV2 in Norway in January this year. ITV's version of the show will be filmed in the UK later this year and air in 2026. She has starred in some massive releases already this year Weapons is the latest big-screen horror to hit UK cinemas today (August 8), terrifying audiences with the tale of a group of children who vanish at exactly the same time on the same night. The film is written and directed by Zach Cregger who was also the mind behind genre-bending horror Barbarian and 2025 thriller Companion. His latest project has already won rave early reviews from critics. Brave cinema-goers watching Weapons today may wonder where they've seen the film's star, Julia Garner, before. The actress plays devoted teacher Justine Gandy who finds herself in the firing line when her entire class fails to show up for school. What has Julia Garner been in? Before Weapons, Garner already had a glittering CV in the world of film and TV. Her big breakout role was as fierce southerner Ruth Langmore in the long-running Netflix drama Ozark, in which she starred alongside acting heavyweights Jason Bateman and Laura Linney. Her portrayal of Ruth won her three Emmy Awards in 2019, 2020 and 2022 in the Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series category. She was nominated for another Emmy in 2022 in the Lead Actress category for her role as con artist Anna Delvey in Netflix series Inventing Anna, but didn't scoop the win. The 31-year-old star's other acting credits include roles in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Apartment 7A, Wolf Man and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Julia Garner's health battle In a 2021 interview with W Magazine, Garner opened up about her struggles with epilepsy as a child, as well as battling with learning difficulties. 'I had really bad reading problems and learning disabilities, and I was also very sick as a child, with epilepsy,' she told the publication. 'I felt like everything that I said was stupid, so I just shut down." However, she discovered that acting helped her come out of her shell and communicate in new ways. She explained: "When I took acting, I discovered that I could use someone else's lines and still express my own feelings. "I loved that, because I felt like I was being heard. And not only that, I felt like I could hear myself for the first time.' Who is Julia Garner's husband? Garner married musician Mark Foster back in December 2019. Her famous spouse is the lead singer of the band Foster the People who had hits with Pumped Up Kicks, Call It What You Want and Don't Stop. The pair had their first meeting at the Sundance Film Festival and they got engaged during a road trip to Yellowstone National Park. Despite plans to wed in 2020, Garner hurried things along and they ended up getting married at Christmas time at New York's City Hall - the same place her own parents had tied the knot.
