BBC drama Mix Tape will have Netflix One Day fans hooked
Romance lovers get ready as the BBC has just announced a brand new drama that promises to tug at the heartstrings of viewers. Titled Mix Tape, the four-part series sounds like the ideal watch for fans of hit Netflix show One Day, offering a similar emotional journey through love, time and second chances.
The series has been adapted from Jane Sanderson's acclaimed novel of the same name, and the show is set to premiere on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer later this summer.
With a story that spans decades and continents, it's already gaining widespread attraction, having picked up the TV Spotlight Audience Award at SXSW 2025.
So, what can viewers expect from this highly anticipated series?
What is Mix Tape about?
The official synopsis reads: "The four-part series follows Daniel and Alison, moving between their teenage romance in 1989 Sheffield and the modern-day reality of their adult relationships living on opposite sides of the world."
Much like the beloved characters Emma and Dex from One Day, Mix Tape explores a deep and emotional connection between two people who find their lives taking very different paths. But fate has other plans.
The main characters Daniel and Alison are separated as they build completely different lives on opposite sides of the world with new partners.
"The pair reconnect through a song from their shared past and explore their burning curiosity to understand if this is the love, and the life, they were meant to have," the synopsis continues.
The series stars Teresa Palmer, known for her roles in The Clearing and The Fall Guy, as Alison and Jim Sturgess, known for his roles in Across The Universe and Cloud Atlas, as Daniel. Their younger selves are played by Bridgerton's Florence Hunt and new-comer Rory Walton-Smith - who will be playing his first mainstream role.
The show was filmed in locations in Dublin, Ireland and Sydney, Australia, and the series promises a romance "packed with emotion" set against a fantastic soundtrack which will transport you back to the 80s.
"Mix Tape will take viewers back in time to that intoxicating feeling of first love [and be] a classic all-encompassing romance set to a banging nostalgic soundtrack," producers told Variety.
Sue Deeks, Head of BBC Programme Acquisition, said: "Accompanied by an absolutely cracking 80s soundtrack, Mix Tape is an enjoyable blend of nostalgia, romance and heartbreak – it really is the perfect summer treat!"
Patrick Roberts, Senior Vice President of global sales at Boat Rocker Studios, added: "We're delighted by the strong response to Mix Tape we've received from the BBC and our other partners around the world and can't wait for audiences to discover this unique take on a modern love story."
Mix Tape will be available to watch on BBC iPlayer and BBC Two later this summer.

Gary Lineker ‘can't wait' to host new ITV show The Box after BBC exit
The former footballer, 64, who left the BBC One sports show in May, said he was excited and 'can't wait' to host The Box. In the show, 10 yellow boxes house a celebrity contestant who will be transported to unknown locations, before being released to face whatever game awaits on the other side of the door. Each week two players will face The Duel, a finale in which the loser leaves the competition for good. Lineker, who had presented Match Of The Day since 1999, said an emotional goodbye in an early departure from the broadcaster on May 26. It followed a social media row after he shared a post about Zionism, which featured a depiction of a rat, historically an antisemitic insult. Lineker, who was the BBC's highest-paid presenter, issued an unreserved apology for the social media video he shared, which led to his early exit from the BBC. Lineker was due to host BBC Sport's coverage of the FA Cup in the 2025-26 season. Lineker said: 'I can't wait to host The Box. I've always felt right at home in the box on a football pitch and whilst this is a different proposition, the fundamentals are similar. 'The contestants will have to quickly and masterfully work out how each game works, whilst also trying to get ahead of the competition to take control. 'It's going to be unpredictable and thrilling to watch, and I'm excited that I get to have a front row seat to all the action.' Katie Rawcliffe, director of entertainment, reality and daytime commissioning at ITV, said: 'Gary is the perfect fit for The Box, an entertaining, exhilarating and immersive new format.' Dan Adamson, chief content officer at production company Twofour, added: 'We're delighted to be making The Box with ITV and Seefood TV. 'From the first time we saw those iconic yellow boxes open in an incredible location we were hooked. Now, with Gary on board, we have the ideal master of ceremonies to make this real event telly, he is after all a man who knows what it's like under pressure in the box. 'He's sure to raise the competitive spirit as our cast bursts out of those boxes, into unknown, ambitious and spectacular challenges.' The Box was first launched on TV2 in Norway in January this year. ITV's version of the show will be filmed in the UK later this year and air in 2026. Lineker also co-hosts The Rest Is Football podcast, which moved to internet sports streaming platform DAZN after he left the BBC.

Gary Lineker officially signs up to 'unpredictable' new show following BBC exit
Gary Lineker is officially returning to TV – but in a radically different role to one viewers have come to expect over the years. The 64-year-old broadcaster and former footballer stepped down from the BBC earlier this year, and presented his last ever Match of the Day episode in May. During his emotional goodbye, the veteran TV host choked up as he sat alongside co-presenters and fellow former football pros Alan Shearer and Micah Richards. But after hosting the sport highlights show for 26 years, Lineker's next adventure is set to be radically different as he joins ITV's new gameshow The Box. According to ITV, 'The Box sees 10 celebrity contestants transported to unknown locations, before being released to face whatever game awaits on the other side of the door'. The synopsis continues: 'Every episode will see them face surprising reveals, unique games, and a compelling series arc – as each week two players will face The Duel, a dramatic show finale which will see the loser leaving the competition for good.' In a statement, Lineker said: 'I can't wait to host The Box. I've always felt right at home in the box on a football pitch and whilst this is a different proposition, the fundamentals are similar. 'The contestants will have to quickly and masterfully work out how each game works, whilst also trying to get ahead of the competition to take control. It's going to be unpredictable and thrilling to watch, and I'm excited that I get to have a front row seat to all the action.' Lineker's new show, which will air in the UK in 2026, has already been greenlit for a second season after the success of its Norwegian edition spawned several versions in other countries. The former Everton and Barcelona plater confirmed his exit from the BBC during the early months of 2025 after he shared a post to his Instagram story from the Palestine Lobby group titled 'Zionism explained in two minutes'. His repost included an illustration of a rat, which has historically been used as an antisemitic representation of Jewish people, most notably in Nazi Germany propaganda. Lineker later 'apologised unreservedly' and swiftly deleted the post from his account, saying he was unaware of the reference and that posting it had been a mistake. After the former England striker left the BBC but before joining the ITV gameshow, The Sun claimed that his prospective presenting gig on The Box would 'infuriate' his former employers. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video The publication reported that The Box had been gathering steam as TV networks search for the next answer to match The Traitors' dominance – see the latest attempt, Destination X. Touted as a possible successor to Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway on ITV, The Box had apparently caused ITV to pursue Lineker for some time. More Trending The tabloid reported that ITV has been keen to snap up Lineker for some time and thinks this show, hailed as a mashup of I'm A Celebrity and SAS: Who Dares Wins, could be just the thing. A TV source told The Sun: 'The scheduling hasn't yet been confirmed, but filming takes place in the autumn, and the series is due to air early spring. 'It looks likely to get a Saturday night slot, though, but obviously it's all still to play for.' View More » Metro contacted Gary Lineker's representatives for comment. Got a story? Weapons star Julia Garner's life off-screen including health battle and music star husband
She has starred in some massive releases already this year Weapons is the latest big-screen horror to hit UK cinemas today (August 8), terrifying audiences with the tale of a group of children who vanish at exactly the same time on the same night. The film is written and directed by Zach Cregger who was also the mind behind genre-bending horror Barbarian and 2025 thriller Companion. His latest project has already won rave early reviews from critics. Brave cinema-goers watching Weapons today may wonder where they've seen the film's star, Julia Garner, before. The actress plays devoted teacher Justine Gandy who finds herself in the firing line when her entire class fails to show up for school. What has Julia Garner been in? Before Weapons, Garner already had a glittering CV in the world of film and TV. Her big breakout role was as fierce southerner Ruth Langmore in the long-running Netflix drama Ozark, in which she starred alongside acting heavyweights Jason Bateman and Laura Linney. Her portrayal of Ruth won her three Emmy Awards in 2019, 2020 and 2022 in the Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series category. She was nominated for another Emmy in 2022 in the Lead Actress category for her role as con artist Anna Delvey in Netflix series Inventing Anna, but didn't scoop the win. The 31-year-old star's other acting credits include roles in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Apartment 7A, Wolf Man and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Julia Garner's health battle In a 2021 interview with W Magazine, Garner opened up about her struggles with epilepsy as a child, as well as battling with learning difficulties. 'I had really bad reading problems and learning disabilities, and I was also very sick as a child, with epilepsy,' she told the publication. 'I felt like everything that I said was stupid, so I just shut down." However, she discovered that acting helped her come out of her shell and communicate in new ways. She explained: "When I took acting, I discovered that I could use someone else's lines and still express my own feelings. "I loved that, because I felt like I was being heard. And not only that, I felt like I could hear myself for the first time.' Who is Julia Garner's husband? Garner married musician Mark Foster back in December 2019. Her famous spouse is the lead singer of the band Foster the People who had hits with Pumped Up Kicks, Call It What You Want and Don't Stop. The pair had their first meeting at the Sundance Film Festival and they got engaged during a road trip to Yellowstone National Park. Despite plans to wed in 2020, Garner hurried things along and they ended up getting married at Christmas time at New York's City Hall - the same place her own parents had tied the knot.
