John Gosden can finally end his long wait for a 2000 Guineas win with this banker

The Sun02-05-2025

GO go go Gossa! Let's make the 2,000 Guineas a 'Shoe-in'.
It remains one of the mysteries of the modern world how training great John Gosden has never won the colt's Classic.
1
Kingman was Gosden's one that got away. He was only beaten once in eight starts but that was when chasing home Night of Thunder in the 2014 Guineas.
For many he was robbed that day with the winner drifting across the track and making it impossible for the three-year-old to know he had a battle on his hands.
Now, though, Kingman's son FIELD OF GOLD (3.35) is out to put the record straight in today's Betfred-sponsored feature live on ITV.
And it's not just Gosden who is out for a moment of history. His stable jockey Kieran Shoemark took over from Frankie Dettori last season and was left with a trio of fillies — Inspiral, Free Wind and Emily Upjohn — who were past their sell by date.
Shoemark was much maligned for no reason, but showed his class as a man and jockey when eventually grabbing his Group 1 thanks to Friendly Soul, who proved just that, in the Prix de l'Opera on Arc weekend.
This term, Shoemark and the Gosdens have been in cracking form, banging in the Nell Gwyn with Zanzoun, the Craven with Field of Gold and the Queen Anne trial at Ascot on Wednesday thanks to Sardinian Warrior.
After the Craven, I was convinced Field Of Gold would be a short price for the Guineas, but he was still 6-1. It was hard to understand, as the giant grey was useful as a juvenile and had just powered to a clear success.
Maybe people just don't like the Craven anymore. After all, Haafhd was the last horse to do the Guineas double way back in 2004. Incidentally, you have to go back to 1991 and Mystiko the last grey to bang in a Guineas.
Today, Field of Gold a strong favourite and will surely take all the beating for Juddmonte. I hope he absolutely romps home.
Field of Gold is likely to be held up, but if there is a flaw in him that could be it, as it's hard to see a confirmed front-runner in the line-up.
The obvious candidate is Tornado Alert, who is owned by Godolphin, a team which has better fancied runners in Ruling Court, chosen by William Buick, and champion two-year-old Shadow Of Light in a first-time tongue strap.
Shadow of Light banged in the Middle Mark (6f) and the Dewhurst (7f) last term but stamina for this mile is open to question.
Of the others, Expanded needs to improve for Ballydoyle to give Aidan O'Brien a 11th 2,000 Guineas while Jessie Harrington's Green Impact is a relative unknown.
On Sunday it's the turn of the fillies in the Betfred 1,000 Guineas with crack two-year-old's DESERT FLOWER and Lake Victoria — between them unbeaten in nine races — going head-to-head for owners Godolphin and Coolmore.
I love Lake Victoria, and she was outrageously good in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies' Turf at Del Mar. But something has to give and, for me, Desert Flower could yet be one of the best 1,000 Guineas winners for a long time.
There's a bit of Oh So Sharp about Desert Flower, who powered clear in the 2024 Group 1 Fillies' Mile. In every one of here starts she's got better and better and her stamina might be the key asset in the closing stages. Let's hope she's ready to bloom after a week of sunshine.
That all said, today we'll forget the sun in his jealous sky as we hope to lie in a Field Of Gold.

Karen Carney says England star will be 'disappointed' after defeat to Spain

Karen Carney says Hannah Hampton will be 'disappointed' not to have stopped the first of Claudia Pina's two goals after Spain came from behind to beat England to a place in the Nations League semi-finals. Alessia Russo fired past Cata Coll with a composed strike against the run of play to put the Lionesses in front after 22 minutes at Espanyol's RCDE Stadium. But an inspired Pina turned the game just moments after coming on in place of Salma Paralluelo, equalising for the hosts from a tight angle on the hour-mark. With 20 minutes remaining of the Nations League group-stage clash, Pina cut inside Missy Bo Kearns and struck a sumptuous effort beyond Hampton to make it 2-1 and complete the comeback. The world champions preserved their narrow advantage to advance through to the Nations League semi-finals, with Sarina Wiegman's side left to lick their wounds just a month out from the Women's Euros. Watching back Pina's leveller in the ITV studio, Carney criticised both Kearns and Jess Carter, before pointing the finger at England goalkeeper Hampton. 'She [Pina] has been on fire all season for Barcelona and I think she's more influential for them when she comes off the bench,' ex-England midfielder Carney said. 'What she did really well was never getting picked up. She ghosts into these spaces and she's always unattended. 'Does Kearns go to her? Does Jess Carter go to her? England don't clear their lines. First ball, second ball, that's the golden rule, especially around the centre of the pitch. 'I don't know if Hannah Hampton is caught blindsided by bodies in front of her… she gets a hand to it, but I think she'll look back and be disappointed because it's not right in the corner. 'But I am being hyper-critical because we're playing Spain and this is a game we have to look on that we might get in the semi-final or final of the Euros so it was a little bit disappointing to concede in that manner.' For the second goal, Carney's ITV colleague Anita Asante felt Kearns should have done a better job of showing Pina away from goal. 'It was pure quality. She's come on with immediate impact, she's done that for Spain time and time again,' Asante said. 'She's finds a pocket of space, waiting for the opportunity to get the ball, and she drops inside and just unleashes that shot, grazes it inside the post. 'It's a brilliant finish but with England, you can see the gaps are getting too big, there's no awareness of who is going to pressure. 'In that instance, Missy Bo Kearns just allows her to come back inside. Really, you want to show players like that outside and away from the goal. She had the whole goal to aim for. 'That just became a problem with some of the changes. They had a bit more fatigue and the gaps opened up.' England head coach Wiegman admitted there was room for improvement in the performance, viewing the match as a 'learning moment' in the build-up to the Euros. 'Concerned? That is a learning moment. I would not say concerned,' she explained. 'They did something different so you want to exploit the space that they leave in behind, but first you have to keep the ball. That is not easy. Something to take with us moving forward.' Wiegman defended Hampton's performance having put her faith in the Chelsea goalkeeper as her number one – a decision which prompted the shock retirement last Mary Earps month. 'She was put under a lot of pressure, as was the whole defence,' Wiegman added. 'There were many moments where there were a lot of players around her, a lot of crosses and a lot of runs in front of her. 'It was a good game for her experience.' Holly Willoughby returns to ITV show as Netflix show axed after one season

Former host Holly Willoughby, alongside Stephen Mulhern, will appear in just one episode of the new six-part series when it airs later this year The second series of ITV's You Bet! will feature Holly Willoughby as a guest star rather than a presenter, as the show takes to the road across the UK. Hosted by Stephen Mulhern, the former hit 80s gameshow promises to be 'bigger and braver' than last year's first run. ‌ Each of the six episodes will have a panel of celebrities who must predict whether or not the plucky challenger will complete their task. ‌ As well as Holly, the celebrity panellists will include Zoe Ball, Rob Beckett, Alesha Dixon, Johnny Vegas, Alison Hammond, Josie Gibson, Danny Jones and Oti Mabuse. Others taking part are Rylan Clark, Judi Love, Josh Widdicombe. Alex Brooker Babatunde Aléshé, Eddie Kadi, Will Best, Nick Mohammed, AJ Odudu, Greg Rutherford and soap brothers Adam and Ryan Thomas. Presenter Stephen last month told the Mirror he was 'gutted' over Holly's departure but appreciated that she'd rung him to tell him that she was pulling out. After the demise of Dancing on Ice, which the pair also hosted together, Holly no longer has any TV shows on ITV. It has been reported that her Netflix show, Bear Hunt, in which celebrities tried to avoid capture by Bear Grylls, is not returning. ‌ Stephen said: 'It'll be interesting to see what Holly's going to do next really. I don't know what. 'I'm gutted she's not doing You Bet - but I've had time to think about it. We've filmed one episode already and it felt very comfortable and it felt good. And I think maybe it is just a one presenter show. 'Bruce Forsyth was the first person to do it, and he did it on his own. Matthew Kelly made it the best show on the telly. So maybe it's happened for the right reasons.' On the new show - You Bet on Tour - he added: 'This time we're hitting the road! Each week I'll be joined by a top celeb panel, as our challengers take on some brilliantly bonkers and amazing challenges. With the title of You Bet Champion on the line, it's going to be unbelievable from the start.'
