Iran-Israel conflict: Khamenei transfers power to military as tensions escalate, says report

Mint18-06-2025
As tensions with Israel intensify and pressure from the White House grows, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has reportedly transferred significant authority to the Supreme Council of the Iranian military, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
This move follows claims that Khamenei has been moved to an underground bunker in northeastern Tehran, accompanied by close family members, including his son Mojtaba, according to a report by Iran Insight.
Under Iran's system of government, Khamenei has supreme command of the armed forces, the power to declare war, and can appoint or dismiss senior figures including military commanders and judges.

‘A mirage': Iranian President takes a swipe at Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu over offer to help with water crisis

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian took a swipe at Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday (Aug 13) after the Israeli Prime Minister offered to help with Iran's water crisis. Taking to his X account, Pezeshkian declined Israel's offer and labelled the country a 'regime' that 'deprives' Gaza of food and water. 'A regime that deprives people of Gaza from water and food says it will bring water to Iran? A MIRAGE, NOTHING MORE,' he said in a sharp rebuke. A regime that deprives #Gaza of water and food now says it will bring water to Iran? A MIRAGE, NOTHING MORE. — Masoud Pezeshkian (@drpezeshkian) August 13, 2025 During a Cabinet meeting in Tehran, the Iranian president also said that 'those with a deceptive appearance are falsely claiming compassion for the people of Iran.' 'First look at the difficult situation of Gaza and (their) defenceless people, especially children who are struggling … because of hunger, lack of access to potable water and medicine, because of a siege by the brutal regime.' Netanyahu, in a video message, called on Iranians to 'take risks for freedom,' 'take to the streets' and demand accountability from the country's government. He vowed to bring Israeli water experts to provide 'cutting-edge technology and know-how' to Tehran, once the country is 'free' from its current regime, according to Israeli media. 'We do not have water' Pezeshkian, on Sunday (Aug 10), told a group of officials that 'we do not have water, we do not have water under our feet, and we do not have water behind our dams, so you tell me what do we do? Someone comes and tells me what do I have to do?' He said that 'we are in a serious and unimaginable crisis,' adding that his administration was in touch with experts who were working to find a solution to the problem. In June, Israel launched a missile salvo targeting Iran, killing 1,100 people, including several military commanders. Iran retaliated and carried out a wave of airstrikes, killing 28 people in Israel. (With inputs from AP)

Human Rights Watch says Israeli airstrike on Iranian prison apparent war crime

Beirut, Aug 14 (AP) Human Rights Watch alleged Thursday that an Israeli airstrike on a notorious Iranian prison was 'an apparent war crime", while also accusing Tehran of harming and disappearing prisoners after the attack. Israel struck Evin Prison in Tehran, one of Iran's most notorious detention facilities for political activists and dissidents, on June 23, during its 12-day war with the Islamic Republic. The strikes during visiting hours hit Evin Prison's main southern entrance, another northern entrance and other areas of the complex, destroying buildings that had medical facilities and prison wards. The Iranian authorities initially said at least 71 people were killed during the airstrike, among them civilians including inmates, visiting relatives, and prison staff. Iranian media later raised that number to 80. It was unclear why Israel targeted the prison. Human Rights Watch said the attack was 'unlawfully indiscriminate" and that there was no evidence of an advance warning or a military target before striking the prison complex, which it estimates holds over 1,500 prisoners. 'To make matters worse, Israeli forces put at grave risk prisoners who were already victims of Iranian authorities' brutal repression," said Michael Page, the rights group's deputy Middle East director. Human Rights Watch says prisoners were subject to 'ill-treatment and violence" both as they were being taken out of the prison following the attack and as they were returned. After the attack, Iranian authorities evacuated and transferred the prisoners to two other facilities in Tehran province and said on August 8 that they were gradually returned. Iranian state media said the prisoners were transferred peacefully and without any conflict. But relatives and Human Rights Watch said some political prisoners were beaten with batons and 'electric shock weapons" for resisting wearing handcuffs and protesting prison guards separating death-row inmates. The group said some of the prisoners have disappeared, including Swedish-Iranian doctor, Ahmadreza Djalali, who is at risk of execution. The rights group says Iran had refused to give them any information about his whereabouts. 'Iranian authorities should not use Israel's strikes on Evin prison as another opportunity to subject prisoners, including those who should never have been in prison in the first place, to ill-treatment," said Page. The war in June, which killed about 1,100 people in Iran and 28 in Israel, started after Israeli jets struck key nuclear and military facilities. Iran then launched a barrage of missiles over Israel. ‘Peace, Not Division In Caucasus': Russia to review Armenia-Azerbaijan ‘Trump Route' corridor

Russia has announced it will carefully review the details of the Armenia–Azerbaijan transport corridor project, known as the 'Trump Route,' though specifics remain undisclosed. Senior diplomat Alexey Fadeyev stressed that any foreign involvement in the South Caucasus must support peace rather than fuel new divisions. He also highlighted the importance of considering Armenia's membership in the Eurasian Economic Union and the role of Russian border guards in the Syunik region when unblocking transport links. Meanwhile, Russian envoy Igor Khovayev met Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Tehran to discuss regional developments. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan, backing local solutions through mechanisms like the 3+3 structure. They also agreed to deepen cooperation to ensure stability and security in the volatile Caucasus region.#Russia #TrumpRoute #Armenia #Azerbaijan #Caucasus #Iran #Geopolitics #BreakingNews #SouthCaucasus #WorldNews Read More
