Will PM Modi visit China for the SCO summit? Government says…

Mint4 days ago
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on July 17 that it would inform everyone at an 'appropriate time' about the possibility of Prime Minister Narendra Modi visiting China next month.
'The SCO meeting is some months away. The participation by countries are finalised as per the mutual convenience. We will let everyone know in an appropriate time,' MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, responding to media query about the possibility of PM Modi's visit to China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit scheduled next month.
MEA reaction came amid reports suggesting that PM Modi will likely visit China for the SCO summit.
This, if confirmed, will be PM Modi's first visit to China after the two neighbouring countries' ties came under severe strain following the 2020 military standoff in Galwan along the Line of Actual Control(LAC) in eastern Ladakh.
A possible meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping is especially anticipated during the summit, the reports suggested. The two leaders met last during the BRICS summit in Russia in October 2024.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Tuesday that leaders from more than 20 countries and heads of 10 international organisations will attend the Tianjin Summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and related events next month.
The SCO Tianjin Summit will be held from 31 August- 1 September, Wang said during a joint press meeting with SCO Secretary-General Nurlan Yermekbayev, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
The SCO meeting is some months away. The participation by countries are finalised as per the mutual convenience.
Apart from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin and other leaders of the SCO member states are expected to attend the summit.

The Chinese-made F-7 BGI training aircraft crashed into the Milestone School and College campus in Dhaka's Uttara area.

Iran Rules Out US Talks Ahead of Nuclear Meeting With Europe

Iran said it has no plans to resume nuclear talks with the US even as it prepares to hold discussions on its atomic program with European, Russian, and Chinese officials this week. 'At the moment, we have no plans to hold talks with the US,' Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said in a televised press conference on Monday. Earlier, Iranian state TV said Iranian diplomats planned to meet counterparts from the UK, France and Germany for nuclear talks in Istanbul on Friday. Baghaei said Iran's deputy foreign ministers will 'seriously raise' Tehran's demands during those discussions. He didn't detail the demands but said Tehran will take the countries to task for their stance during last month's US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran. Baghaei also warned any attempt by the three European countries — also known as the E3 — to reinstate United Nations sanctions through the so-called snapback mechanism would compromise their right to any role in the nuclear negotiations and their ability to invoke any of its provisions or processes. The 'snapback' is a rule within the 2015 nuclear deal that allows participating countries to trigger a UN Security-Council process that could automatically reimpose broad sanctions on the Islamic Republic if it's deemed to be violating the agreement. On Sunday, Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the E3 'lacks any legal, political, and moral standing' to activate the mechanism because of its failure to comply with the nuclear deal after US President Donald Trump abandoned it during his first term and because of the bloc's 'political and material support' for Israeli and US attacks on his country. On Tuesday Tehran plans to host Russian and Chinese officials for talks focused on the nuclear issue and the prospect of additional sanctions, Baghaei said. The meeting comes after Ali Larijani, a senior adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, visited Russia on Sunday and discussed Iran's nuclear program and regional developments with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

16-Hour Debate On Operation Sindoor In Parliament Next Week

A 16-hour debate on Operation Sindoor has been scheduled for next week in parliament. This was announced by the Business Advisory Committee after strong demands from the Opposition. The Opposition has insisted that the debate should be held this week and Prime Minister Narendra Modi must reply. But the matter had to be deferred to next week in view of a scheduled foreign visit of the Prime Minister. Operation Sindoor - the Indian retaliation to the April 22 terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam -- was among the eight topics the Opposition had sought discussion on during the monsoon session of parliament. The topics were decided on during a marathon virtual meeting of 24 Opposition parties last week. The government's assent to the Operation Sindoor debate came since, sources have said. Earlier today, addressing the media ahead of the Monsoon Session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had hailed Operation Sindoor as a 'Vijay Utsav' (victory celebration) for the nation, describing it as a shining testament to the strength and precision of the Indian Armed Forces. "This Monsoon Session is a 'Vijay Utsav'," PM Modi said. "The entire world has witnessed the strength of the Indian Armed Forces. The objective set for Operation Sindoor was achieved with 100 per cent success. In just 22 minutes, our forces neutralised terrorists in their own hideouts," he said.
