Snap introduces next-gen 'Specs' AR Glasses, Snap OS platform: What's new

Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, has announced its next-generation consumer-focused augmented reality (AR) glasses at the Augmented World Expo (AWE) 2025. Named Specs, the new wearable device is scheduled for launch in 2026 and marks Snap's most ambitious attempt yet at integrating AR into everyday life. Alongside the hardware reveal, Snap also introduced major upgrades to its AR operating system, Snap OS.
The new Specs aim to understand users' surroundings, enable shared AR experiences such as multiplayer games, and support tasks like Browse, streaming, and productivity—all through a sleek, self-contained design.
Snap Specs: Details
Unlike previous Snap Spectacles—which were available only to developers—the upcoming Specs will be publicly released and are designed as an 'ultra-powerful wearable computer' with see-through lenses that overlay digital content onto the real world.
Snap described the new Specs as a device built to 'seamlessly integrate digital content into everyday life,' positioning the glasses as part of a broader shift in computing where physical and digital environments converge. The company said it believes 'the time is right for a revolution in computing.'
Snap OS: What's new
Snap is also rolling out key updates to Snap OS, the platform powering its AR glasses. These upgrades are designed to support multimodal AI, spatial awareness, and real-time content generation. Highlights include:
Deep integration with OpenAI and Gemini (Google Cloud): Developers can now create multimodal, AI-powered Lenses and publish them for the Specs user base.
Depth Module API: Allows Snap OS to anchor AR visuals in 3D space using translated 2D data from language models—enhancing spatial intelligence.
Automated Speech Recognition API: Supports real-time transcription in over 40 languages, including non-native accents, with high accuracy.
Snap3D API: Enables on-the-fly generation of 3D objects directly within Lenses.
Tools for developers
Snap is also introducing fleet management tools and features focused on location-based and guided experiences, designed for venues such as museums, parks, and public exhibitions:
Fleet Management App: Allows institutions or developers to monitor and manage multiple Specs units remotely.
Guided Mode: Lets developers pre-configure Specs to launch directly into a multiplayer or single-player Lens for instant interaction.
Guided Navigation: Designed for AR-based tours, this feature provides turn-by-turn guidance through points of interest like landmarks or exhibits.

NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved semiconductor proposals of SiCSem , Continental Device India Limited ( CDIL ), 3D Glass Solutions (3DGS), and Advanced System in Package (ASIP) Technologies, worth ₹4,600 crore. The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY), in an official statement, said that the four facilities are expected to generate a cumulative employment of 2,034 skilled professionals, which would catalyse the electronic manufacturing ecosystem, resulting in the creation of many indirect jobs. With these four approvals today, the total approved projects under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) have reached 10 with cumulative investments of around ₹1.60 lakh crore in six states. SiCSem and 3D Glass will set up facilities in Odisha, while CDIL will expand its existing facility in Mohali, Punjab, and ASIP will establish its unit in Andhra Pradesh. SicSem is collaborating with British firm Clas-SiC Wafer Fab to establish integrated facility of Silicon Carbide (SiC) based Compound Semiconductors in Info Valley, Bhubaneshwar, Odisha. This will be the first commercial compound fab in the country. The project proposes to manufacture Silicon Carbide devices. This compound semiconductor fab will have an annual capacity of 60,000 wafers and packaging capacity of 96 million units. 3D Glass Solutions will be setting up a vertically integrated advanced packaging and embedded glass substrate unit in Info Valley, Bhubaneshwar, Odisha. This unit will bring the world's most advanced packaging technology to India. The planned capacity of this unit will be approximately 69,600 glass panel substrates, 50 million assembled units, and 13,200 3DHI modules per annum. ASIP will set up a semiconductor manufacturing unit in Andhra Pradesh, under a technology tie-up with South Korean APACT with an annual capacity of 96 million units. CDIL, meanwhile, will expand its discrete semiconductor manufacturing facility at Mohali, Punjab. The proposed facility will manufacture high-power discrete semiconductor devices such as MOSFETs, IGBTs, Schottky Bypass Diodes, and transistors, both in Silicon and Silicon Carbide. The annual capacity of this brownfield expansion will be about 158.38 million units. CDIL, which has adopted an asset-light business model in recent years by outsourcing foundry, was aiming to boost its capacity by 100 million units to 600 million units annually by adding new lines with the incentive received under the SPECS scheme, ETTelecom reported in June 2024 . 'We were one of the first companies to apply in the SPECS scheme and we are one of the first companies to get the refund which has been sanctioned. It has been put and the line was inaugurated,' Prithvideep Singh, GM of CDIL, had told ETTelecom, adding that the company had a utilisation rate of over 90% then. Given the growing demand for semiconductors in telecom, automotive, data centres, consumer electronics and industrial electronics, these four new approved semiconductor projects would significantly contribute to making "Atmanirbhar Bharat" (self-reliant India), the IT ministry said. 'With the approval of these projects, semiconductor ecosystem in country would get significant boost as these projects include country's first commercial compound fab as well as highly advanced glass-based substrate semiconductor packaging unit,' MeitY said.

Instantly, her skin is smoothed to porcelain, her eyes enlarged, lips plumped, and nose slimmed. She barely recognises herself – this virtual version is flawless, like a digitised doll. The likes pour in when she posts it. But when she puts down the phone and glances in the mirror, a pang of disappointment hits. The real her has pores, a crooked smile, an actual human face. How can it compete with her filtered face? She isn't alone in this feeling. We live in an era of AI-crafted beauty, where anyone can alter their looks at will, and it's messing with our heads in profound ways. The New Normal of 'Perfect' Ten years ago, airbrushing was mostly for magazine models. Today, it's at everyone's fingertips. More than 500 million people use Instagram and Snapchat filters daily. Scroll through any social feed and you'll see them: subtly (or not so subtly) enhanced faces with impossibly smooth skin, sparkling eyes, even AR makeup that never smudges. These aren't obviously fake funhouse effects. Often, they're gentle tweaks that make you 'look like yourself, but better.' The result is a creeping homogenisation of beauty. Influencers across the globe start to share an uncanny resemblance, the so-called 'Instagram Face': almond eyes, poreless skin, high cheekbones, plump lips. It's as if AI has distilled all the likes and preferences into one archetype, and we're all converging toward it. The pressure to conform isn't just in our heads; it's reinforced by numbers and algorithms. Consider this startling fact: in cosmetic surgery clinics, doctors have reported a surge of patients requesting to look like their filtered selfies, a phenomenon so common it's dubbed 'Snapchat dysmorphia.' In one survey of plastic surgeons, 55% said patients cited the desire to look better in selfies (often meaning 'more like my filtered self') as a reason for seeking surgery – up from 42% just two years prior. Young people, bombarded by idealised images (not only of celebs but of their own friends after edits), are internalising unrealistic standards. A recent study of teen girls found that those who heavily edited their photos felt significantly worse about their bodies, linking filter use with higher body dissatisfaction. The logic is cruelly simple: if everyone online seems blemish-free and beautiful, any real flaw you have feels magnified. The AI in Your Pocket Mirror We've quietly outsourced beauty judgment to algorithms. Many smartphone cameras automatically apply 'beauty mode' by default, smoothing skin and brightening eyes without you even knowing. There are AI-powered apps that rate your face for attractiveness or 'fix' your selfies in one tap. On TikTok, the 'Bold Glamour' filter recently went viral for its uncanny realism; it doesn't even glitch when you cover your face; it's like a live Photoshop mask. People were both amazed and disturbed. One 20-year-old said after using it, 'I don't want to look at myself in the mirror without it.' This is the insidious effect: once you've seen the AI-perfected you, the real you might start to feel inadequate. Instagram itself had announced a ban on some extreme face-altering filters, acknowledging the link to worsened body image in young women. But for many, the damage is already done; the concept of unfiltered reality has been altered forever. When Beauty Gets Biased There's another layer, one of cultural and racial bias. Beauty filters are often programmed with a certain ideal in mind, and that ideal skews light-skinned and Eurocentric. For example, AI 'beauty contests' have gone awry. In a notorious 2016 experiment, an AI judged an international beauty pageant. Of the 44 winners it selected, 42 were white or light-skinned; only one had dark skin. The algorithm wasn't explicitly racist; it was trained on data that reflected society's biases (mostly photos of light-skinned people labelled as attractive), and so it learned a distorted standard. Similarly, many filters automatically lighten skin or narrow noses – effectively digital bleaching and Westernising of features. Users in Asia have noticed how 'beauty mode' often gives them rounder eyes and paler complexions. What message does that send? It subtly devalues the rich spectrum of human looks in favour of a cookie-cutter template. We risk bulldozing cultural notions of beauty and replacing them with a single AI-generated mould. The Beauty 'Glitch' Perhaps the most distressing illustration of this AI-beauty complex is how literal it's become. Not long ago, women would bring celebrity photos to plastic surgeons; now they bring filtered photos of themselves. They're chasing an edited version of their own face. It's as if we each carry an avatar of who we 'could' look like, and reality falls short. This is a psychological pressure cooker. One filter might be harmless fun – adding puppy ears or silly freckles – but the pervasive use of 'pretty' filters creates an expectation that you should always look that polished. A quick scroll through social media can become an exercise in self-scrutiny: why doesn't my skin glow like that, or my jawline look so sharp? We forget we're comparing ourselves to carefully curated illusions. And it's not just women. Young men, too, feel it – perhaps seeing peers with chiselled jaw filters or buffed-up AR muscles. The difference is that women historically face more societal scrutiny on appearance, so the effects hit them hardest. For instance, over 90% of sampled Instagram beautifying filters were found to shrink the user's nose and 90% also enlarged the lips, basically enforcing a singular 'ideal' facial structure (tiny nose, big pout) on millions of images. Think about that: the code itself carries a judgment of what a 'better' face is. Little by little, it can warp our collective perception of normal. So where do we go from here? The genie isn't going back in the bottle. AI will only get more sophisticated at altering faces in real time. But we can change how we engage with it. Teach media literacy early: Show teens how filters work and how they warp reality. Encourage side-by-side posts: Some influencers now share 'filter vs. no filter' comparisons. Followers often find the unfiltered images more relatable, and even more beautiful. Push for transparency: Countries like Norway now require influencers to label retouched photos in ads. Imagine if every filtered image had a small symbol. It could help recalibrate our expectations. Take filter breaks: If you feel a jolt of shock seeing your real face after days of filters, you're not alone. Taking regular breaks can help reset your perception. 'The most radical act might be looking in the mirror and deciding the unfiltered you is enough.' But, the Bigger question being.. From Victorian corsets to Bollywood's 'size zero' craze, beauty standards have always been shifting. What's new is that AI isn't just reflecting our preferences, it's actively shaping them, distilling billions of likes into a single template. The danger? Perfect becomes synonymous with identical. And in chasing algorithmic beauty, we risk erasing the quirks, asymmetries, and cultural richness that make faces, and people unforgettable. That's the ultimate gender glitch: when technology designed to 'enhance' ends up flattening our diversity, fuelling insecurity, and narrowing the idea of beauty until it's just one face, endlessly copied. Maybe the most radical thing you can do in 2025 is look in the mirror, really look, and decide that the unfiltered you is enough. Not because it fits an AI's idea of perfect, but because it's yours. For Gen Z in India, a demographic that's projected to wield $2 trillion in spending power by 2035, earning their attention is difficult, shaped by fast paced lifestyle and endless scrolling. It's time brands recognize that this isn't just a marketing nuance — it's the new battleground for growth and lasting relevance with digital natives. The traditional playbook, revolving around old-school metrics like impressions and view-through rates, no longer captures the full picture. This shift emphasizes why the pivot to attention-based measurement is an important ballgame in the landscape. The Shifting Sands of Attention We are currently in the middle of an Attention Flux, where human attention has risen to become the most potent predictor of business growth and brand impact. Understanding attention economics is only the beginning - successful brands must develop sophisticated strategies for earning quality engagement. Platform selection is critical, as not all digital environments perform equally. The attention study, which tracked more than 3,000 respondents across India, reveals a counterintuitive truth - platforms designed for fleeting moments like disappearing Stories, retain focus 2x longer than feed-based rivals. Format strategy proves to be equally important. While non-skippable formats generally capture more attention, some skippable formats can be more than twice as effective in capturing voluntary, active attention. When consumers choose to engage despite having the option to skip, that voluntary attention becomes far more valuable. Every consumer scrolls differently – they shift fluidly between formats and platforms, which has positioned multi-format advertising strategies to not just be valuable, but essential. Gen Z isn't just passively consuming content; they're actively engaging, curating, and influencing; and with their presence spread across various touchpoints in their journey, it has become impossible for brands to solely rely on a single-format approach. A comprehensive cross-format approach allows marketers to reach Gen Z where they are in the moment. Emerging formats like Augmented Reality Lens activations, in-scroll ads, and even Snap's recent innovation- 'Sponsored Snaps' are built to precisely bridge this gap to enable co-creation over mere consumption. Creative execution seals the deal. Understanding Gen Z's preferences for visual expression is crucial. Nearly 80% rely on images, GIFs, and immersive visuals to connect with their inner circle, while 77% find augmented reality and interactive visuals more engaging than traditional formats. They are 'shopcializing' - sharing shopping experiences with close friends via photos or video calls, creating seamless online-offline experiences. This dynamic demands a nuanced understanding of how attention operates. Think of it as a spectrum: a fleeting glance (under 1 second) might plant your brand's flag, a three-second pause pitches your tent, but stay too long (9+ seconds) and you might be overstaying your welcome. The goal is quality, not just quantity, and we often overlook this important aspect. India's moment in the Attention Spotlight India stands at a unique inflection point in this global attention flux. With the world's largest Gen Z population, a cohort that buys as frequently as millennials but is 1.5x more likely to research purchases, Indian brands have an unparalleled opportunity to lead the global conversation on attention-based brand building. However, there's a striking disconnect: while 45% of Indian businesses acknowledge Gen Z's potential, only 15% have actively leveraged these insights, suggesting the massive untapped potential with a cohort that is set to influence the future of spending in India. The competitive advantage for those who act is clear. Research demonstrates that incorporating attention-optimized platforms into a media mix can boost Gen Z engagement by 22%. This transformation demands a complete reimagining of how brands approach consumer relationships in an attention-scarce environment. Traditional measures must give way to attention-based metrics that truly predict business outcomes. Quality engagement trumps quantity every time. The future belongs to the brave - ones who are prepared to abandon yesterday's playbook. This is not about chasing Gen Z, but about letting them pull us into their world, one intentional, engaging interaction at a time. After all, in an economy where attention is both currency and compass, the brands that listen hardest and pull up their socks the fastest will not lead the longest but redefine the very essence of brand relevance and what it means to thrive in the digital age.
