Amazon confirms 98-year-old star will return in sequel to iconic 80s comedy

Beloved 80s space comedy Spaceballs is actually coming back after 40 years — and so is Mel Brooks.
The 1987 classic will finally get a sequel to mark 40 years since it first hit cinemas and roasted almost every major movie along with it.
Spaceballs, which has gathered a cult following since its release, is primarily a spoof of Star Wars but also parodies Alien, Star Trek, and more.
Even the Wizard of Oz wasn't safe from Mel's cutting comedy, with the actor having co-written, produced and directed as well as playing two characters.
The as-yet untitled sequel will see the return of the 98-year-old actor, who is soon to turn 99, because how could it possibly be made without him.
Little is known about the Amazon MGM Studios production other than it is due to reach theatres in 2027.
Mel posted a video on his X account, teasing which franchises could be in his sights and ridiculing the sequel culture we're currently living in.
'I told you we'd be back,' he wrote in bold letters before the familiar Star Wars (or Spaceballs) blue writing scrolled before fans.
It read: 'Thirty-eight years ago, there was only one Star Wars trilogy. But since then there have been… A prequel trilogy, a sequel trilogy, a sequel to the prequel, a prequel to the sequel, countless TV spinoffs, a movie spinoff of the TV spinoff which is both a prequel and a sequel.'
As the fanfare played, names of numerous other franchises were displayed such as seven Jurassic Parks, '36 MCU movies with two different Robert Downey Jr.'s' and 'DCU attempt number one' and 'number two'.
The video cut to Mel wearing a Spaceballs sweatshirt as he said: 'After 40 years, we asked 'what do the fans want?' But instead, we're making this movie.'
Fans of the cult classic will remember his golden painted face as Yoghurt, the spoof version of Star Wars' Yoda who upholds the good side of 'the Schwartz'.
Mel also appeared as President Skroob — Brooks written backwards — who is the useless leader of Planet Spaceballs.
Deadline confirmed that the EGOT winner is not the only original cast member returning, either.
Bill Pullman and Rick Moranis will reprise their roles as Lone Starr and Lord Dark Helmet (parodies of Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader, respectively).
Joining the cast is Keke Palmer who is almost as well-known for her comedy off-screen as she is for her acting on-screen. More Trending

This will be the first time Rick, 72, will appear in a live-action movie since 1997 and the first film appearance at all since he voiced Rutt in Brother Bear 2 (2006).
He's been living life away from Hollywood since then, keeping out of the spotlight — until now.
Hopefully, Spaceballs 2 will be worthy of his re-emergence after three decades. Only time will tell so may the Schwartz be with you, Spaceballs 2 cast.

Fans around the world are in a state of disbelief that the South Korean dystopian TV phenomenon is drawing to a close, concluding the story of Seong Gi-hun, aka Player 456 (Lee Jung-jae). However, it might not be the absolute end, as the creator of the show Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed his gripping idea for a spin-off to Metro at last night's London premiere for season three. The writer previously expressed interest in continuing the franchise, but he's now finally shared the details of what his idea would entail with familiar, terrifying characters… and we're desperate to see this fascinating plot play out. While standing alongside lead actor Lee Jung-jae, Hwang Dong-hyuk emphasised that there was 'nothing concrete yet' for an official spin-off. Nonetheless, he's thought long and hard about how the Squid Game universe could live on, suggesting that they could delve into the backstories of people including the sinister Frontman (Lee Byung-hun) and the Recruiter (Gong Yoo). 'This is just some ideas that I've been throwing around during production. But there's a three-year gap between season one and two, since Gi-hun turns away from the plane,' he said. 'So I'd like to maybe look into the lives of those behind the mask, the Frontman, the Recruiter and Captain Park. How did they meet? What did they do during the three years? 'How did they stay on top of Gi-hun and whatnot? So that's something that I'm thinking about. I have to make it!' Metro TV Editor, Sabrina Barr When I first heard that there was talk of a Squid Game spin-off series, I envisioned a show taking place after the events of season three, perhaps following Gi-hun's daughter as she seeks revenge for her father, if he doesn't make it out of the game for a second time. However, hearing Hwang Dong-hyuk talk about the possibility of a sequel series that would fill in the blanks of that three-year gap between seasons one and two has piqued my interest greatly. I would still love to delve into the aftermath of the original series, but there is so much history about the game that we don't know, with ample content that could pack out a prequel focusing on the Frontman, the Recruiter and Captain Park. Alternatively, I also think it would be fascinating to watch a prequel on the very first Squid Game, so that we can find out how the game started in the first place, and what it was like in that inaugural year. On the other hand, maybe part of the allure that surrounds Squid Game is the sense of mystery, with the audience never being privy to the answers that they crave. Either way, I'm elated that it definitely feels as though there is more Squid Game to come in the future. The Frontman and the Recruiter have been a part of Squid Game since the beginning, although the former was only unmasked at the very end of season one, when he revealed himself to his brother, detective Detective Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon). The latter shed light on his backstory in season two, when he explained to Gi-hun that he willingly shot his own father dead during the game while he was working as a soldier. How To Train Your Dragon star lost 'a chunk of chin' during painful scene

The 17-year-old led the way as Hiccup in the live-action remake of the 2010 animated classic, alongside Nico Parker, Nick Frost and Gerard Butler. In the movie, which is in cinemas now, young Viking Hiccup takes matters into his own hands when he accidentally captures a Night Fury dragon named Toothless, after being deemed too weak for dragon-fighting training. He defies years of tradition when he befriends the creature, while also trying to impress his crush, Astrid (Nico). However, in a chat with Entertainment Weekly, Mason recalled the moment his character's adventure with Toothless left everyone covered 'in blood'. 'Every time I had to fly the dragon in the movie, I was on this gimbal thing, and it was like a giant mechanical bull,' he said. 'And we were doing a scene where it's me and Nico on the dragon, and Toothless is going crazy and wild, and she's trying to hold on. So we start the scene and [the gimbal] starts going, and it's going, and it's really crazy. 'And then the dragon goes down. Normally, when the dragon goes down, [the gimbal] goes up. So I get down, I'm ready, and then the dragon goes up and the head smacks me in the chin, and three rod iron bolts smacked me.' The teenager had no idea of the extent of his injuries but continued on with the scene like a true professional, until he noticed that his co-star – and the 'dragon' were both covered in blood. 'They call cut, and I just hear Nico go, 'Oh my God,'' he recalled. 'She looks at her hands, and they're covered in blood … I looked down and there's a pool of blood on the dragon. 'And I go down and I look in a little mirror we had, and there's a little chunk of my chin gone – and it sucked.' After filming ended, Mason rushed out for medical attention and ended up with five stiches for his troubles. But his efforts weren't for nothing as How To Train Your Dragon has left fans and reviewers seriously delighted so far – with Metro giving the remake an impressive four stars. It currently boasts an incredible 99% audience Rotten Tomatoes score, compared to a 77% critics ranking. Vincent raved on the platform: 'One of the best live action remake as far as I can remember. The dragons look incredible, it's almost a one-to-one adaptation, and the performances are really good.' 'It follows the original animated movie to a tee. The casting was nearly spot on. The dragons were amazingly crafted,' Heather A agreed. 'Loved it!! Just as good as the animated,' Oscar penned. Mel Brooks announces ‘Spaceballs' sequel with video
The Schwartz will be with us again. Mel Brooks will reprise his 'Spaceballs' role as Yogurt in the upcoming sequel to the hit 1987 'Star Wars' spoof that will be released in theaters. The comedy legend, 98, hyped the new movie in a post on X on June 12. 'I told you we'd be back,' Brooks captioned the post. The clip features words scrolling on the screen, 'Star Wars'-style, with music underneath. The video begins by poking fun at how many 'Star Wars' movies have been made in the years since 'Spaceballs' came out in 1987. It goes on to joke about the high volume of films and TV series in other franchises, including 'Dune,' 'Jurassic Park,' 'Avatar,' Marvel, DC Comics, 'The Lion King,' 'Harry Potter,' 'Star Trek,' 'Alien,' 'Predator' and even the Beatles, as well as 'Oppenheimer.' 'But in thirty-eight years there has only ever been one … 'Spaceballs.' Until now …' the text reads before Brooks appears wearing a sweatshirt that says ''Spaceballs' the sweatshirt,' a nod to the merchandising jokes that run throughout the original film. 'After 40 years, we asked, 'What do the fans want?' But instead, we're making this movie,' Brooks says at the end of the video before a giant Dark Helmet head appears with the words, 'The Schwartz awakens in 2027.' 'May the Schwartz be with you,' Brooks then says as the clip draws to a close. 'While the title, plot details, and rest of cast are being kept under wraps, the film has been described by those who have not yet read the script as 'A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film,'' Amazon MGM Studios said in a statement. Josh Greenbaum will direct the film, which will be written by a team of writers, including Josh Gad, who teased the sequel last year. Gad shared Brooks' video while expressing his excitement about joining the 'Spaceballs' universe. 'I was that child who saw 'Spaceballs' before I ever saw 'Star Wars' and then wondered why anyone would do a dramatic remake of the Mel Brooks classic,' he wrote on Instagram on June 12. 'It is therefore the greatest gift of my life to now help take the reins and work alongside Mel and this incredible group to do a sequel to the movie that first inspired George Lucas.' Deadline reports Bill Pullman and Rick Moranis will return for the 'Spaceballs' sequel to reprise their roles as Lone Starr and Dark Helmet, respectively. Moranis has not appeared in many movies over the last three decades after being a staple on the big screen in the '80s and early '90s.
