Egypt, EU, EIB collaborate on Delta climate adaptation project
The Egyptian Ministry of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation has organised a roundtable to review preliminary studies for a project aimed at adapting the northern Delta region to the effects of sea level rise. The project is being carried out in collaboration with the European Union and the European Investment Bank (EIB).
Representatives from the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, and the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation also participated in the roundtable, which focused on the 'Adaptation of the Northern Delta Affected by Sea Level Rise' project. The project forms part of the food pillar of the Country Platform for the 'NWFE' (Nexus on Water, Food and Energy) Program.
The initiative is part of national efforts led by the Ministry of Planning to implement nine projects under the 'NWFE' program across the water, food, and energy sectors. These projects aim to enhance the transition to a green economy and implement Egypt's National Climate Change Strategy (NCCS) 2050.
Rania A. Al-Mashat, Egypt's Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation, emphasised continued coordination with relevant ministries and authorities to finalise technical studies for water and food projects within the 'NWFE' program. This, she said, is part of the state's efforts to promote the green economy transition and expand mitigation and adaptation projects related to climate change.
Al-Mashat also noted that contracts for renewable energy projects with a capacity of 4.2 GW have already been signed under the energy sector, out of a total target of 10 GW.
The project aims to benefit approximately 10 million citizens, empower smallholder farmers to implement adaptation policies addressing sea-level rise, and strengthen rural communities' responses to disasters and the impacts of sea-level rise. It also aims to encourage agricultural diversification for food security and income growth, and reduce internal migration from affected areas to cities. The project targets the governorates of Kafr El-Sheikh, Beheira, Damietta, Dakahlia, and Port Said. Its goals include preserving fertile agricultural land and expanding reclaimed desert land.
The European Union is providing €125,000 in financing, and the European Investment Bank is offering a grant of €300,000 to fund consultancy services and complete necessary studies for project implementation. The funding will focus on formulating tools and mechanisms to attract, stimulate, and involve the private sector in the project. This aims to develop alternatives to reduce and rationalise public spending, enhance the value of private spending, and attract investments.
The 'NWFE' program is described as a model for country platforms based on country ownership, representing an effective regional model and approach for financing to address climate change issues. It addresses mitigation, adaptation, and resilience, with a focus on a just transition to a green economy and provides an effective human-centered approach to address the impacts of climate change and its driving factors.
The program follows a development financing pattern that provides blended financing tools. It is based on both the country's development efforts and national ministries in all sectors, the development financing provided by development partners, as well as attracting the private sector through investments. Additionally, it benefits from consultancy services and expertise from relevant entities to enhance the efficiency and viability of projects, making them attractive to funding sources.

Amazon Faces German Scrutiny Over Marketplace Pricing Practices

The watchdog contends that Amazon's mechanisms for controlling third-party sellers' prices may infringe upon both national and European Union competition laws. The Bundeskartellamt's concerns centre on Amazon's use of algorithms and policies that potentially penalise third-party sellers for setting prices deemed too high. Such penalties could include demotion in search rankings or outright removal of products from the platform. The authority argues that these practices may constitute an abuse of market dominance, restricting fair competition and consumer choice. Forcibly disappeared Egyptian poet marks 145 days in UAE detention, family calls for release
The family of disappeared Egyptian poet Abdul Rahman al-Qaradawi have issued a plea to the Emirati government for his release, as he marks 145 days of solitary confinement at an unknown location in the country. Qaradawi was arrested in Lebanon in January, and extradited to the UAE over a video he posted to social media while visiting Syria, in which he expressed critical views of the Egyptian, Emirati and Saudi authorities. Both Egypt and the UAE issued extradition requests for Qaradawi, with Lebanese authorities acting on the Emirati warrant on 8 January. Since then, he remains forcibly disappeared in the UAE, with no charges nor an indication about when he will appear in court. According to Qaradawi's UK lawyer, Rodney Dixon, since his extradition Qaradawi's family managed to see him for just 10 minutes on 23 March. 'They weren't taken to the place where he is being held and still don't know where he is imprisoned. Since then, there has been no further contact, despite repeated requests. 'He remains disappeared in the UAE, held in an undisclosed location. He has now been held for over 130 days without charge, without access to a court, and in clear violation of international human rights standards." Dixon reported that while Qaradawi appeared to be physically stable during the visit, 'it is impossible to know his true condition' given the heavily restricted nature of the interaction. 'What is clear is that he is being held in solitary confinement, with no access to the outside world,' he said. 'Troubling precedent' In a statement given to MEE, Qaradawi's family expressed 'deep concern' about his welfare and urged the Emirati authorities 'to respect his rights and ensure his safety'. 'Our only goal is to see him safe and back home with his family and daughters where he belongs,' they said, adding that they are working closely with his international legal council to secure his release. According to Dixon, Qaradawi does not have a lawyer of his choosing and instead has been assigned a government appointed lawyer, who has provided no information to the family on his whereabouts. In March, a group of United Nations human rights experts raised the alarm over Qaradawi's continued forced disappearance, and called on the UAE to disclose his whereabouts. They further expressed concern regarding the legal process of Qaradawi's extradition, which was triggered by an arrest warrant issued by the little-known security body, the Arab Interior Ministers' Council (AIMC), saying that the move was politically motivated and not based on legal criteria. The experts also warned that Qaradawi could face further extradition to Egypt, where he faces a three-year prison sentence for 'spreading false news'. Human Rights Watch has highlighted the UK and the EU's capacity to pressure the UAE for Qaradawi's release, citing their partnerships with the country, including the UK-UAE Sovereign Investment Partnership or the EU-UAE Cooperation Agreement. 'These partnerships are not solely economic in nature; they reflect shared commitments to justice, transparency, and human rights. Silence, in this case, risks signaling that these principles are secondary to strategic interests, setting a troubling precedent that could embolden further transnational repression,' HRW said in a statement. Dixon has written to the UK Foreign Office, confirming that he had 'received feedback' from them, but was unable to disclose further details. 'We look forward to seeing the full weight of their support to protect his rights,' he said.
