UK economy grew at fastest pace in a year in Q1 before expected slowdown
LONDON : Britain's economy grew at its fastest pace in a year in the first three months of 2025 as homebuyers rushed to beat a deadline on property purchases and manufacturers sped up output ahead of US President Donald Trump's higher import tariffs.
In a bounce that is not expected to be maintained in the rest of 2025, output grew by 0.7%, confirming a preliminary estimate and the fastest quarterly pace since the first three months of 2024, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said.
'Growth in March alone was revised up to 0.4% from a previous reading of 0.2%,' the ONS said.
The jump in economic output in early 2025 contrasted with growth of just 0.1% in the fourth quarter of 2024 and data has already shown that gross domestic product fell by 0.3% in April from March, although the drop was exacerbated by one-off factors.
The Bank of England (BoE) has said it expects economic growth of about 0.25% in the second quarter of this year.
Finance minister Rachel Reeves is hoping for a pickup to reduce the pressure on her to raise taxes again later this year to remain on course to meet her budget targets.
Thomas Pugh, chief economist at audit firm RSM UK, said weak consumer spending and hiring figures in recent weeks were likely to be a one-off reaction to a tax increase on employers and Trump's tariffs, many of which have been suspended.
'Now that uncertainty has started to recede, consumer confidence is rebounding, and business surveys point to the worst of the labour market pain being behind us,' Pugh said.
A survey published earlier today showed confidence levels among British employers hit a fresh nine-year high as they became more optimistic about the outlook for the economy.
The BoE is expected to cut interest rates twice more over the remainder of 2025 which is likely to support household spending.
However, a renewed rise in energy prices in the event of further conflict in the Middle East could add to the strains on the already slow-growing economy.
Today's data from the ONS showed household expenditure grew by 0.4% in the January-to-March period, revised up from an initial estimate of an increase of 0.2%, driven by housing and household goods and services as well as transport.
Britain's property market saw a sharp increase in activity in the run-up to the March 31 expiry of a tax break for some homebuyers.
Households dipped into their reserves to help fund their spending with the saving ratio falling for the first time in two years although at 10.9% it remained strong.
Manufacturing grew by 1.1% in the first quarter – ahead of the increase in US import tariffs in April – compared with the last three months of 2024.
The ONS also said Britain's current account deficit grew to a bigger-than-expected £23.46 billion in the January to March period from just over £21 billion in the last three months of 2024.

UK royal couple William and Kate seek fresh start with move to £16m home in Windsor
LONDON, Aug 16 — Britain's Prince and Princess of Wales, William and Kate, are to move into a new home in Windsor, reported PA Media/dpa. The royal couple are moving to the eight-bedroomed Forest Lodge in Windsor Great Park, with their children George, Charlotte and Louis. A Kensington Palace spokesperson said: 'The Wales family will move house later this year.' According to The Sun newspaper, the royal couple are paying for the property and renovations themselves, avoiding any extra cost to the taxpayer. The paper reported that work has already started on a minor renovation at the Grade II-listed property. Redacted planning applications lodged with the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead show permission for minor internal and external alterations was granted earlier this month. The council's decision notice refers to the removal of a window and work to a fireplace. In 2001, Forest Lodge underwent £1.5 million (RM8.55 million) restoration works and was put on the rental market for £15,000 a month. Images inside the home taken at the time showed the property boasted original stonework, elaborate plaster cornices and ceiling decoration, and a half-barrel vaulted hallway ceiling. The Waleses' move will be a short one from their current main home at Adelaide Cottage in Windsor, and the children attend nearby Lambrook School. They also have homes at Anmer Hall in Norfolk and Apartment 1A in Kensington Palace in London. As heir to the throne, William inherited the Duchy of Cornwall estate, a portfolio of land, property and investments valued at more than £1 billion, when his father became king. According to The Sun, Forest Lodge would be worth about £16 million on the open market. The freehold is owned by the king. — Bernama-PA Media/dpa

These kinds of social media videos are most likely to convert shoppers
As for product recommendations, a higher proportion of respondents – 66% – say they trust those made by everyday social media users. — Pixabay Social media is becoming increasingly integrated into American shopping habits. And not just because many of the major platforms now have dedicated e-commerce features. According to a recently published survey by marketing platform Omnisend, consumers lean on social media in several ways as they make purchase decisions. More than half of the 2,000-plus social media users surveyed by Ominsend admit that content on platforms like TikTok and Instagram have directly inspired them to buy something. If a product or category is trending online, 45% say they're more likely to purchase, per the survey. Only about 13% link their choice to buy with 'specific TikTok content types,' however. Still, Pija Ona Indriunaite, Omnisend's director of brand, said in the London-based company's press release that 'repeatedly seeing certain products on the platform primes consumers to notice and trust these items elsewhere.' This makes 'TikTok an important starting point' for businesses, she added, 'even if it doesn't always get credit for the sale.' Shoppers also use social media to research products. When asked how they determine whether 'an item is worth buying,' 70% of respondents point to social media content. Users rank verified reviews as their most trusted source of information on these platforms, followed by other users' comments. As for product recommendations, a higher proportion of respondents – 66% – say they trust those made by everyday social media users. Fewer have confidence in the endorsements celebrities and influencers make – 38% and 49%, respectively. This is perhaps because public figures often get paid by brands to promote products. Wondering how your business can create social media content that consumers will trust? By analysing the 25 highest-selling products of 2024 across several Amazon categories along with the TikTok videos that featured them, Omnisend found that 10 to 15 second-long videos 'filmed as informal, first-person recommendations consistently outperform other formats.' – Inc./Tribune News Service
