Crystal Palace's European dream takes new twist after Lyon relegated over financial troubles
The seven-time French champions were hit with a provisional relegation back in November after racking up massive debts, and although they have since sold a number of first-team players, French football watchdog the DNCG upheld the relegation following meetings on Tuesday.
The decision was announced by the French Football League (LFP) on Tuesday evening. Monaco, Nantes and Paris FC will face no further action.
Although Lyon can still appeal against the ruling, the decision to relegate a club that won seven consecutive titles between 2001-02 and 2007-08, and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League as recently as 2020, will send shockwaves through French football.
The club's president John Textor told L'Equipe last week he was confident the club's financial position had been resolved, having said back in November there was 'no chance' the club would be relegated.
Textor is in the process of selling his shares in Premier League club Palace, who are at risk of being denied their place in the Europa League next season as Lyon have also qualified after finishing sixth in Ligue 1.
A sale to Woody Johnson, owner of the NFL 's New York Jets, has been agreed but the Premier League is yet to ratify the deal and Johnson must yet pass the Premier League 's owners' and directors' test.
Lyon's relegation would not have an impact on Palace's position in the Europa League unless Uefa was to apply its own sanctions against the French club that led to exclusion from European competition. But Palace hope that Textor's sale will be enough to secure their Europa place.
After receiving the provisional relegation last year, Lyon sold the likes of Said Benrahma, Anthony Lopes and Maxence Caqueret in January, and this summer they have already sold Rayan Cherki to Manchester City.
A statement from Lyon read: " Olympique Lyonnais acknowledges the incomprehensible decision rendered by the DNCG tonight and confirms that it will immediately file an appeal.
"In recent months, we have worked closely with the DNCG, satisfying all of its requests with cash equity investments exceeding the amounts requested.
"Thanks to the equity contributions of our shareholders and the sale of Crystal Palace, our cash position has improved significantly, and we have more than sufficient resources for the 2025/26 season.
"With so much cash liquidity demonstrated, and sporting success which has earned European competition in two consecutive years, we sincerely do not understand how one administrative decision could relegate such a great French club.
"Through our appeal, we will establish our substantial cash resources as necessary for Olympique Lyonnais to keep its place in Ligue 1."

A new era starts for Real under Xabi Alonso and Dean Huijsen and Trent Alexander-Arnold are smart additions, although their Club World Cup campaign was not the most inspiring, especially when they were sent packing following a 4-0 defeat by PSG in the semi-finals. It will take time to adjust to Alonso's methods and they will start the season on the back foot with Jude Bellingham out until October, limiting their options in midfield given they let Luka Modric leave and could also be without Eduardo Camavinga because of an ankle issue. Barcelona should start stronger with a more settled squad and Hansi Flick in the dugout – and they finished four points better off than Madrid in top spot last season, scoring an eye-watering 102 goals. Their front three of Lamine Yamal, Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha remains one of the most devastating around, while Marcus Rashford and youngster Roony Bardghji are good attacking back-up options along with Ferran Torres. Monaco in the mix again It is hard to see past European champions PSG dominating Ligue 1 again this season, so we will look to other markets for our acca selection and Monaco are a solid pick at 10/11 to make the top three. The principality club have made the top three in four of the last five seasons, doing so under Adi Hutter in their past two campaigns. Marseille pipped them to second spot by four points last term, but the Ligue 1 expected-points table had Monaco as runners-up on 70 points, compared with the 61 they actually accrued. Marseille, meanwhile, outperformed their expected points by +8.73, so they could well regress this season. Young stars Eliesse Ben Seghir and Mika Biereth remain at Monaco and will surely only get better, while experienced pair Paul Pogba and Eric Dier have arrived along with Barcelona loanee Ansu Fati. Potential Leverkusen decline favours Dortmund As in France, the German Bundesliga title race looks pretty uncompetitive this season and Bayern Munich should justify quotes of 2/9 to win the title. So it is in the 'winner without Bayern Munich' market that there could be some value, with Borussia Dortmund a good pick at 7/4 to be best of the rest. Last season was one to forget for Dortmund, who could only scrape fourth spot, but they were much better following the arrival of Niko Kovac in February and finished the Bundesliga season with seven wins and a draw from their last eight matches. Their subsequent Club World Cup campaign was not the best, although they did give Real Madrid a game in the quarter-finals and they have kept together the bulk of their squad, while adding Jobe Bellingham to their midfield and Yan Couto and Daniel Svensson to their defence. The main reason for backing them, though, is the lack of competition. Bayer Leverkusen have downgraded in the dugout from Alonso to Erik ten Hag, and have lost the core of their team with Jeremie Frimpong, Jonathan Tah, Florian Wirtz and Granit Xhaka departing. Leipzig, meanwhile, could not even make the top six last term and have lost Benjamin Sesko, while Eintracht Frankfurt will have to make do without Liverpool-bound Hugo Ekitike. Four-league acca leg 3: Bundesliga – Borussia Dortmund to win title without Bayern Munich @ 7/4 with Sky Bet Tough times ahead for Verona Serie A could again be home to the most competitive title race across Europe's major leagues and, while I think Juventus could offer a bit of value at 5/1, it is not suitable for an accumulator. Instead, I like the look of Hellas Verona to be relegated at 11/8. Verona finished 14th in Serie A last term, although they were in the thick of the relegation battle at the end of the season, surviving thanks to five points from their last three games. They lost 21 times in the Italian top flight and conceded 66 goals – both of those tallies were worse than relegated sides Empoli and Venezia. Last season's top scorer for Verona, Casper Tengstedt, is no longer at the club after his loan spell expired, while key defender Diego Coppola has been sold to Brighton, so it could be a testing season for Paolo Zanetti's side.
