Tennis Star Elena Rybakina Receives Disturbing Messages After Upset Loss
As if blowing a match at the National Bank Open wasn't bad enough, Elena Rybakina has received countless disturbing messages on social media.
During Wednesday night's semifinal, Rybakina was in command of the deciding set against 18-year-old Victoria Mboko. However, it all fell apart for the former Wimbledon champion when she was serving for the match. She eventually dropped a third set tiebreak to the Canadian teenager.
Immediately after Rybakina's match against Mboko went final, tennis fans went on Instagram to leave nasty comments on her most recent post.
"The way you melt down during matches, and the ridiculous unforced errors you make most be studied," one fan commented.
"Get your head fixed, this is not normal," a second fan said.
"Find a job and stop with tennis, thanks," an Instagram user wrote.
"You're a disgrace to the tennis world," another user said.
"Quit playing for real," another fan said. "Can't handle the pressure."
Unfortunately, this has been a recent trend in tennis. Katie Boulter dealt with similar messages after the French Open.
"It becomes more apparent every single time you go on your phone," Boulter told the BBC. "I think it just kind of shows how vulnerable we are, you really don't know if this person is on site, if they're nearby or if they know where you live or anything like that. As far as death threats, it's just not something you want to be reading straight after an emotional loss. A lot of the time you get it after you win as well."
Jessica Pegula also receivede death threats earlier this season.
"These betters are insane and delusional and I don't allow dms and try to remember when to shut my comments off during tournament weeks but they always find a way to my timeline," Pegula said. "This stuff has never really bothered me much but does any other sport deal with this to our level? I'd love to know because it seems to be predominately tennis? It's so disturbing."
We truly hope fans stop resorting to this behavior, but we're not so sure that'll happen. With sports gambling on the rise, stuff like this will continue to happen.

Sixers star Tyrese Maxey marvels at LeBron James' fitness regimen
Tyrese Maxey is one of the NBA's brightest young stars, and he's a bright spot on a Philadelphia 76ers team that is facing some tough questions these days. The guard eclipsed 25 points a game in both of the last two seasons, and during the 2023-24 campaign, he earned his first trip to the NBA All-Star Game. With major injury concerns surrounding fellow Sixers stars Joel Embiid and Paul George, Maxey has been putting in work this summer with the hope of raising his game another notch this fall. He had the privilege of getting to work out with Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James, and he was left marveling at James' passion and work ethic even after 22 seasons in the league. Maxey told ClutchPoints what impressed him about the NBA's all-time leading scorer. 'I think the biggest thing is for me and what I can take from him is just his passion for the game,' Maxey told ClutchPoints. 'Like, I'm extremely passionate. I love basketball. Anytime I can do anything that pertains to basketball, I want to do it. But this man is going on like Year 23 and he was working out and talking and involved like it was probably Year five for him, you know what I'm saying? And that's amazing to see. I think anybody who's able to watch him, not just work out but play should feel honored because it's amazing.' James' legacy is secure at this point, and many consider him one of the two or three greatest players in basketball history. But he will be returning for at least one more season, and his agent, Rich Paul, affirmed earlier this summer that he wants to win a fifth NBA championship. Maxey also said that James has been helpful toward his own efforts. 'I don't know how many times I've worked out with him now,' Maxey admitted. 'I mean, that's crazy to say and, I guess, that's how I know I am getting a little old. But yeah, it's good work, man. It's good work. He does a good job of talking and just being vocal and helping. I'm very appreciative of him. He's done a lot.' Maxey, who is 24 years of age, happens to also be represented by Paul's Klutch Sports Group. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's Converse SHAI 001 Shoe Gets Official Release Date
It's been a colossal year for Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Since last summer, he's won the NBA's Most Valuable Player Award, won an NBA Championship, and even debuted his first-ever signature shoe with Converse. That signature sneaker — the SHAI 001 — was unveiled in February, marking a major milestone in his ascent to becoming a global superstar. While he's worn various colorways on the court since that time, fans have been waiting to get their hands on a pair of their own to wear. The wait is officially over, as the Converse SHAI 001 'BUTTER' will be available in a limited global release on Sep. 4, 2025, via select retail partners, at and on the Nike SNKRS App. Retail partners across North America include KITH locations in Toronto, New York City, and Los Angeles, as well as UNDEFEATED in Los Angeles. From there, it is expected that additional colorways will be released in the future. The 'BUTTER' colorway, which will be the exclusive initial release in September, was the original style that Gilgeous-Alexander wore for the first time at NBA All-Star Weekend in San Francisco. The Thunder star and Converse stole the show that weekend, making their presence felt all over the city with signage and an epic pop-up that gave fans a first look at the SHAI 001 in person. Gilgeous-Alexander is a fashion icon and is widely regarded as the best-dressed player in the entire NBA. The global superstar wanted to bring versatility to his first signature shoe, which is why it's designed to be worn on or off the court. The zipper on the SHAI 001 is a bold statement of customization and adaptability. With a locking mechanism that allows for multiple wear options, the zipper can be worn half-zipped, all the way zipped, or flipped down. 'We made the SHAI 001 a versatile shoe for everyone — from the athlete who's in the gym three times a day to the kids who just want to express themselves on or off the court,' Gilgeous-Alexander explained when his signature shoe was first revealed. As the Creative Director of Converse Basketball, Gilgeous-Alexander was intimately involved with the design of the SHAI 001. He was at the forefront of every facet of his signature logo and shoe design process, imbuing the project with his artistic vision and creative sensibility. From the outset, he shared several hand-drawn sketches with the Converse product and design teams that ultimately inspired the final design of the SHAI 001. 'We gave Shai creative control over the design of the shoe in a way only Converse can. Then, we went to work leveraging the resources of Converse and all the innovation of Nike, Inc. to proudly deliver the SHAI 001,' Jared Carver, CEO and President of Converse said in February. "Converse invented the first basketball shoe, and we have been there for so many of the sport's beloved moments over the last hundred years. We are confident the SHAI 001 will help inspire and inform the next wave of basketball footwear, and return Converse to its rightful place at the heart of the game.' As Converse basketball makes its way back to the forefront of premier basketball footwear, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is leading the charge with the SHAI 001, set to release publicly on Sep. 4, 2025.
