Incumbent seats stay with party
Published on: Mon, Aug 18, 2025
By: Hayati Dzulkifli Text Size: 'Incumbent seats means you don't discuss about the two seats (Inanam and Api-Api). Whether the present YBs (assemblyman, assemblywoman) are going to be the next candidate is a different issue,' said the Api Api Assemblywoman. Kota Kinabalu: Incumbent seats of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) in Sabah as well as in Pakatan Harapan (PH) will not be included in negotiation over seats for the coming 17th State Election (PRN17). PH and PKR Sabah advisor Datuk Seri Christina Liew said two State seats of Api-Api and Inanam under PKR Sabah would continue to be contested by the party. She said the same principle applies for the other component parties (Upko, DAP and Amanah) in PH. She said the negotiations would be handled by PKR Sabah head cum State Leadership Council (MPN) Sabah Chairman Datuk Mustapha Sakmud. '(The negotiation on seats) it is not finalised, but I was informed it is very near to it. We only focus to get ready,' said the state Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister. 'Incumbent seats means you don't discuss about the two seats (Inanam and Api-Api). Whether the present YBs (assemblyman, assemblywoman) are going to be the next candidate is a different issue,' said the Api Api Assemblywoman. However, she said she is ready to defend the Api-Api State seat if asked to do so. 'I know my area very well and there are still a lot of things we have yet to do. I have been the YB (elected people rep for Api-Api) for three terms – one term when I was the opposition and two terms in government. 'If I'm not the candidate, I shall give my best support,' she said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Warisan hardly solved woes they accuse GRS of: Malakun
Published on: Monday, August 18, 2025 Published on: Mon, Aug 18, 2025 Text Size: Malakun who is a member of the Sabah Economic Advisory Council (SEAC) said a resounding success for GRS is crucial for effective governance. Kota Kinabalu: Warisan did little about legacy problems when in power that the GRS Government is now doing its best to resolve, said former Moyog Assemblyman Datuk Seri Panglima Clarence Bongkos Malakun. 'They harp on legacy issues like water and electricity shortages but they should not 'play possum'. 'They are in the know that concerted efforts have been made to ensure long-term water and electricity availability,' he said, adding the opposition would use every opportunity to discredit the GRS and distort facts to garner support. He said Sabah voters are increasingly drawn to local-based parties and coalitions such as GRS which is a coalition of eight local parties. 'I am certain Sabah voters have already made up their mind who should helm the government the next five years,' he said. He hoped there would be give and take among the eight Gabungan component parties when discussing seat allocations. 'I believe no party will get the short end of the stick. Any disapproval or discontent after that should not be allowed because it could potentially create animosity at a time when solidarity must be top priority.' The focus would then be on winning the hearts and minds of the people so that Sabah would remain in safe hands under Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor and his team for another five years. Malakun who is a member of the Sabah Economic Advisory Council (SEAC) said a resounding success for GRS is crucial for effective governance. 'Hence, only winnable candidates should be fielded. GRS should seriously consider fielding young and capable candidates to prepare them for future leadership roles.' He believed it would be very difficult for Barisan Nasional (BN) which ruled Sabah from 1994 till 2018 and Warisan from 2018 till 2020 to regain the people's trust and support. 'BN's influence is diminishing and it has a mountain to climb to regain political dominance in Sabah. 'With only 13 seats in the State Legislative Assembly, it is facing serious challenge to reassert itself as a force,' he said. Currently GRS holds the majority in the Assembly with 42 while Warisan and Umno has 14 and 13 seats, respectively. All in all there are 79 Assembly members - 73 were elected and the remaining six nominated by the government. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Upko Youth urges calm over flag controversy
Published on: Monday, August 18, 2025 Published on: Mon, Aug 18, 2025 Text Size: Felix said prolonging the matter would only raise tensions and potentially disrupt public order. TELUPID: Upko Youth has emphasised that the national flag should remain a symbol of unity and togetherness, rather than a source of division. Its Chief, Felix Joseph Saang, said current debates surrounding the flag could be resolved through better approaches without turning the matter into a street issue or open polemic. 'The relevant parties should be given space to carry out investigations. Let's not act hastily,' he said in a statement. 'If a mistake was made, there are proper ways to offer correction and guidance. If it was done intentionally, then existing laws are in place to take appropriate action.' Felix said prolonging the matter would only raise tensions and potentially disrupt public order. 'We want this issue to be resolved quickly and handed over to the authorities for investigation and closure. 'Our focus should be to ensure that the flag continues to be a symbol of unity among the people, not a cause for conflict,' he stressed. He added that as a youth leader, it is his duty to express concern over matters that could threaten public harmony. 'This is a sensitive issue. If not handled firmly and wisely, it could lead to further disputes and even spread elsewhere,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
