EPS slams MK Stalin over credit claim in Anna University assault case verdict
Chennai: AIADMK General Secretary and former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Wednesday welcomed the Mahila Court's swift verdict convicting Gnanasekaran in the high-profile Anna University sexual assault case.
However, he strongly criticised Chief Minister M.K. Stalin for attempting to claim credit for the judiciary's action.
In a series of pointed posts on social media, Palaniswami asserted that the real credit for the conviction goes to the judiciary and the Madras High Court, which had directed the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) composed of women IPS officers to handle the sensitive case.
He accused Stalin of trying to politically capitalise on the judicial outcome.
'Justice has been delivered not because of the DMK government, but in spite of it,' Palaniswami wrote, adding that the judgment should not be used for political mileage.
'The Chief Minister's self-congratulatory tone is misplaced,' he said.
The AIADMK leader further stated that several critical questions surrounding the case remain unanswered. Chief among them, he said, is why the convict Gnanasekaran was released immediately after his first arrest, only to be rearrested later.
'What transpired between his release and second arrest?' he asked.
Palaniswami also demanded clarity on why key figures, including a Minister and the Deputy Mayor, were never questioned during the probe.
He questioned the abrupt withdrawal of DSP Raghavendra Ravi from the SIT, a move that had raised eyebrows at the time.
'Why did the officer resign midway? What pressure was he under?' he asked.
Referring to the cryptic phrase reportedly used by the accused during the crime — 'Who's that sir?' — Palaniswami said this key clue remains shrouded in mystery.
'Who is that 'sir'? The people deserve to know,' he said.
Meanwhile, AIADMK senior leader and coordinator of the party's Workers' Rights Retrieval Committee, O. Panneerselvam, praised the Mahila Court for delivering justice within five months.
He said the swift verdict has rekindled public confidence in the judicial system and could act as a deterrent against crimes targeting women.
The Anna University sexual assault case, which took place in December 2024, had sparked widespread outrage and intense political debate in Tamil Nadu.
The court has announced that sentencing for the convicted accused will be pronounced on June 2.

Chennai: Refuting charges that the govt wanted to cover up a polluted canal with cloth to hide it from public sight during his Madurai visit, chief minister M K Stalin said on Monday that he had inspected the canal and issued instructions to clean it. "This is not a BJP model govt to cover up truth from world leaders using cloth. This is Dravidian model govt which uncovers cloaks, finds out what was being hidden and finds the solution for the problem," Stalin said in a letter to DMK cadres. Stalin was referring to criticism from opposition parties that cloth was draped to block the polluted Panthalkudi canal from public view during chief minister's road show in Madurai. "Following the reports in media as well as criticism on social media that a canal was covered with cloth, I issued directions to remove the cloth. During my visit to the canal in the evening along with ministers Palanivel Thiaga Rajan and P Moorthy and district officials, I inquired about the cleaning process undertaken in the canal and directed them to expedite the process," Stalin said. Addressing reporters in Madurai, former minister Sellur Raju said the AIADMK govt had built a sewage treatment plant to prevent pollution of water in Panthalkudi canal and river Vaigai. "We built that plant to ensure that the Panthalkudi channel stayed clean. But now, in the name of development of Goripalayam flyover, they have scrapped it. This is not development—it's destruction," he said. The STP can treat two MLD a day and recently the Madurai corporation has allocated 1 crore to restore the facility after the flyover works are completed, he said.

DMK GC resolutions are to hide its failure: Murugan
Chennai: Union minister of state for parliamentary affairs L Murugan said the DMK had passed resolutions attacking the BJP during the party's general council meeting in Madurai in a bid to hide its failures. In a statement on Monday, Murugan said the Dravidian major was adopting diversionary tactics by condemning the BJP govt at the Centre. "CM M K Stalin seems to believe that if they pass resolutions condemning the BJP govt at the Centre, the public will forget about the corruption and failures of his own regime," Murugan said. During the general council meeting on Sunday, the DMK had passed multiple resolutions criticising the BJP from bringing the Waqf Act to withholding of funds and projects to TN. Murugan alleged there was widespread corruption in DMK govt which Stalin wants to hide. "The legacy of systematic corruption evolved under the DMK regime has evolved into brazen looting," he alleged adding the real aim of the general council meeting was to reaffirm that his son and deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin was the heir apparent and party cadres must blindly follow him.
