MotoGP champion Martin to remain with Aprilia for 2026 season

Reutersa day ago
July 17 (Reuters) - MotoGP world champion Jorge Martin will remain with Aprilia for the 2026 season, the Spaniard said on Thursday, having previously announced his intention to leave the Italian team before next season.
Martin won his first MotoGP title last season with Pramac Racing before moving to Aprilia on a two-year contract, but in May the 27-year-old said he had exercised his right to release himself for the 2026 season.
Aprilia reacted to Martin's announcement by saying they were prepared to take the matter to court, but ahead of his long-awaited return to action in Saturday's Czech Grand Prix, the Spaniard put an end to the controversy.
"I'm really happy to be here again. It was a really difficult six or seven months suffering a lot with a lot of injuries but I'm happy to be here and to be back in MotoGP," Martin told reporters.
"Finally, I'm happy to say that I'll continue with Aprilia for 2026."
Martin has raced just once this season after a pre-season crash ruled him out of the first three rounds and a crash in his first race in Qatar led to a collapsed lung and bruised ribs.

He is seen running mere metres away from several athletes speeding down the track at the same time as him. But seconds later, the rebellious man is suddenly tackled, thrust against the wall and dramatically hauled over like a ragdoll. Cheering spectators suddenly turn their attention to the wild altercation as the guard desperately attempts to fully restrain him. The staff member seemingly throws his hands towards the rogue protester, while trying to keep him on the ground to put an end to his disruptive behaviour. He calls for help from other security staff before launching his walkie talkie at the protester on the floor in the middle of the jam-packed crowd. Startled biking fans then appear to stop the guard and push him back slightly. The extraordinary scenes unfolded just 25 metres from the finish line at the race on Wednesday. But when he was asked if he felt similar feelings at this stage compared to 2023, Harman joked there was one identical detail. That is because, just like at Royal Liverpool, Harman was hauled in by the anti-doping team to check his pee - a common test for golfers as in other sports. Harman told BBC Radio 5 Live: "I can't get too far ahead of myself. "The only thing I'm really worried about is the first tee ball tomorrow, and then I'll try to hit the next one up there close to the flag. If not, go to the second hole. "It's a very boring approach that I take. I'm not trying to be heroic or do anything crazy. "I know that I've got the game to do it, and it's just a matter of executing and staying in my own head. "I love coming over here. As far as golf, it's as pure as it gets." Harman sparked controversy in 2023 when it came to light that he was a keen hunter, dubbing him the nickname the 'Butcher of Hoylake'. He stalks deer, wild boar and ducks back home and reckons he once wrestled an alligator with his bare hands. Harman said: 'I'm still a big hunter, a big fisherman. I was surprised and curious why everyone was asking so many questions about it (in Hoylake). 'I didn't realise that everyone was so upset about it - but hunting, it's a hill I'll die on, I'll sleep like a baby at night. 'I'm a very compartmentalised guy, though. I'm not thinking about hunting when I'm golfing. I'm not thinking about golfing when I'm hunting.'

The two teams meet in the second round qualifier and the winner of this tie will face another two hurdles before they can officially join Europe's elite in Uefa's flagship competition. Martin and Panathinaikos boss Rui Vitoria have both named their squads for the two legs, with the return game in Athens pencilled in for the following Wednesday on July 30. Rangers were given arguably the toughest draw when it took place last month. The other two teams also in the opposite side of the draw were SK Brann of Norway and Switzerland's Servette. Panathinaikos failed to qualify for the Europa League last season after they were knocked out by Ajax in the third qualifying round. They did, however, see past French side Rennes in the Conference League play-off, though, to guarantee European football for the season - before Fiorentina won 5-4 on aggregate to end their campaign in the round of 16. Rangers will have to hit the ground running with Martin's new system if they are to get the better of the Greek giants over two legs. And it could be a new-look lineup for the first game at Ibrox too, with as many as SEVEN summer signings registered for the competition. Team news Gers boss Martin will have all-but one of his new recruits ready and available for the Champions League showdown. Thelo Aasgaard is a major doubt for the first leg after he picked up a knock during the 4-1 friendly win against Dunfermline which was played behind closed doors. 3 Emmanuel Fernandez, Jedi Gassama, Joe Rothwell, Lyall Cameron, Max Aarons and Nasser Djiga are all available. Cyriel Dessers and Hamza Igamane have both been named in the squad despite being heavily linked with moves away from Ibrox. But Ben Davies, Ridvan Yilmaz, Robin Propper and Rabbi Matondo have all been left OUT. Panathinaikos could be without Elton Fikay after the left-back suffered a knock in the lead up to the fixture. The Greek side have made four signings this summer, with Pedro Chirivella, Georgios Kyriakopoulos, Ahmed Touba and Alban Lafont snapped up. All four players are available.
