All you need to know about Doctor Who's Omega as classic villain returns

Daily Mirror24-05-2025

Doctor Who viewers will see a major villain return to the franchise after the latest episode set the scene for a reality to be torn apart to make way for evil
Doctor Who fans can rejoice as as the show is set to see a major villain make their return as part of the Unholy Trinity.
Last week viewers learned that Mrs Flood (Anita Dobson) is in The Rani, with the bi-generation also resulting in a new incarnation of the villain (played by Archie Panjabi). But Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies later confirmed that the two Ranis count as one part of the trinity, with grifter Conrad Clark (Jonah Hauer-King) taking the second spot.

While the question remained of who the third member would be the latest episode, Wish World, gave fans the answer they had been waiting for with 1973 villain Omega taking their place in the trinity.

Wish World centers on an Earth where life is dictated by Conrad Clark. The infant God of Wishes has been abducted by the Rani who uses its powers alongside Conrad's warped mind and "a web of titanic power" created by the Doctor's vindicator to mould their "idyllic" world.
The Rani(s) created Wish World so that they could ultimately destroy it as the break in reality it causes will open the Underverse, a realm where "the one who is lost" - Omega - dwells. Conrad describes him as: "Omega - the first Time Lord. The creator of the Time Lords. The greatest and most terrifying Time Lord of all."
Omega's origins are rooted deep within the foundations of Time Lord's. He helped to harness the power of a star which enabled time travel, which in turn laid the foundations of Time Lord civilisation. But, the amazing feat saw Omega lost and totally consumed by madness.
He then became a bitter villain who wants revenge against the Time Lords. The character first appeared in 1972 in The Three Doctors which starred Jon Pertwee, Patrick Troughton and William Hartnell. He appeared again in 1983 before he was banished back to his universe via the antimatter.

It is yet to be revealed if the "Underverse" the Rani mentioned is the same antimatter realm where we last left Omega or if he now resides in a new realm since the events of Arc of Infinity.
Omega has previously been brought to life by actors including the late Stephen Thorne in The Three Doctors, and the late Ian Collier in the Arc Of Infinity. With both of those stars having passed away in the years since we last saw the villain.
Peter Davison also played Omega when he assumed the Doctor's physical form.
However, in Wish World as the Underverse cracks open, a voice is heard bellowing: "Long live Omega! Omega shall be free!" Fans now expect to see a new actor take on the role for the season finale The Reality War next week. Doctor Who will return on Saturday May 31.
New episodes are available from 8am on Saturdays on BBC iPlayer, landing later in the day on BBC One in the UK. Viewers outside of the UK can stream the series on Disney+.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson enjoys a sunny stroll in Paris amid mounting speculation he'll be chosen as the next James Bond

Aaron Taylor-Johnson cut a casual figure as he stepped out in sunny Paris amid increasing speculation linking him to the famous role of James Bond. The Godzilla actor, 34, was pictured out for a morning stroll in the centre of the City of Love on Tuesday. He donned a pair of straight leg blue jeans for the outing which he teamed with some tanned brown boots. While hanging a black and maroon cap from his waist, Aaron threw on a white and orange baggy Head T-shirt. He covered his eyes with a pair of wide-lensed brown sunglasses while accessorising with presumably, an Omega watch. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Just a matter of weeks ago the Hollywood star signed a deal making him a global ambassador for the luxury watch brand - which fans were sure was a major hint he could be the next actor to don the iconic tux of 007. Omega have been the watch providers of the franchise for more than 30 years, with Pierce Brosnan the first Bond actor to wear an Omega watch during GoldenEye. After signing the deal, Aaron said: 'I have always had an appreciation for timepieces but especially for Omega. 'Now, after visiting the factory, I am in awe of the skill required to manufacture such a luxurious product.' Omega's CEO described Aaron as a 'versatile actor with a range that covers action, thriller, romance and much more'. It's precisely those qualities - and his striking good looks - that have led to the actor's strong links to Bond. Taylor-Johnson has been considered a frontrunner to become the next 007 since Daniel Craig relinquished the role with the 2021 film No Time To Die. In fact the 34-year-old was actually believed to have been former Bond producer Barbara Broccoli's ideal candidate before the franchise was purchased by Amazon. Aaron has repeatedly played it cool when asked about the possibility of him succeeding Craig however. 'It's not really for me to say anything,' he told Esquire when quizzed about speculation. But he's even been tipped for the role by former Bond star Pierce Brosnan. After being asked about the possibility of Aaron playing the part during an appearance on The Jonathan Ross show a few weeks ago, the 72-year-old said: 'I think he would make a very fine Bond. 'He was actually in one of the movies I made called The Greatest. This young man we cast as The Greatest. 'He was so impressive then. He just had this charisma, he had this presence... he would be so good. But there's many men on the list, I'm sure.' In the latest bookies' odds for the role however, Aaron has been pipped at the top by two British stars. The current favourite to become the next Bond is none other than The Divergent series star Theo James, 40, who is currently 6/4. The Brit has previously impressed while playing rogue, morally ambiguous characters somewhat similar to Bond in both The White Lotus and and Guy Ritchie's The Gentlemen. Theo has too played down speculation linking him to Bond however, telling The Guardian in 2024 that it 'probably wouldn't be me'. Superman star Henry Cavill, 42, had soared to the top of the odds list for a brief period before being pipped by James [Pictured in April 2024] Second favourite to become the latest actor 'with a license to kill', according to Ladbrokes, is Superman star Henry Cavill (3/1), ahead of Aaron in third (7/2). While Coral's list of candidates comes in as Theo James at 6/4, Henry Cavill (3/1), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (7/2), James Norton (6/1) then Jack Lowden (12/1). Betting habits in recent weeks suggest that eager fans are growing in confidence that Theo James could star in the next movie, with 70% of all bets on the next 007 placed on The White Lotus actor. Ladbrokes representative Cal Gildart said: 'Henry Cavill's return to the head of the Bond betting didn't last long, with Theo James as short as anyone has been to pick up the world's most famous license to kill'. It was announced earlier this year that Amazon Prime had taken over 'creative control' of the James Bond franchise leaving fans fearing the beloved films could be ruined by endless spin-offs. The deal comes after Amazon bought MGM Studios in 2022 as a part of its media push. The acquisition gave Amazon distribution rights to the 007 franchise but not creative control. The company is said to be fast-tracking the new movie after spending a reported $1 billion to regain control from Barbara Broccoli. Producers David Heyman and Amy Pascal have been hired and they are understood to be close to a deal with director Alfonso Cuaron. Then they will go about casting the next Bond. As The Daily Mail reported, the plan is for a 'straight up' reboot after Daniel Craig's 007 died in No Time To Die. There is reportedly set to be no explanation of how the special agent is still alive, no multiverse of Bonds and no attempt to go back to the 1960s for a vintage Bond. Amazon bosses are currently said to be considering locations in which to set the much-anticipated new film, which experts predicted is likely to be released at the end of next year or in 2027. Due to a filming ban being imposed in Central London next year, new locations are reportedly being considered - with Liverpool a frontrunner, according to The Sun. An insider told the publication: 'This will no doubt irk Bond purists who already fear Amazon taking over the 007 franchise may lead to them making big changes. 'But Liverpool is a well-known alternative to London for film-makers. 'It has appeared in everything from The Batman to Captain America and Harry Potter movies, doubling up as international cities.' The source added that it doesn't necessarily mean the story will be set in Liverpool - though eagle-eyed Merseysiders will no doubt spot their city centre in the background. MailOnline contacted Amazon for comment about the possibility of Liverpool being the setting for the next Bond.

EastEnders legend Ross Kemp refuses to rule out return

The 60-year-old returned to EastEnders as Grant Mitchell after almost 10 years away earlier this year. His character arrived back on the Square to help his brother Phil with his mental health problems. Grant recently left Walford again for his home in Portugal. 🏆🥳 WINNER! 🥳🏆 What a year and what an honour to be crowned Best British Soap at The British @SoapAwards 2025 by the people who matter the most - YOU! ❤️ Thank you to everyone who voted! Lots of love, your #EastEnders family. #TheBritishSoapAwards @BBC @BBCOne @BBCiPlayer — BBC EastEnders (@bbceastenders) May 31, 2025 Speaking on Loose Women, Kemp said he owes the BBC soap 'a great debt' for giving him a career in television. Asked whether he would return to the role of Grant again, Kemp said: 'You just don't know, do you? You don't know what's in the minds of the people who work on it. 'I've also (always) known that without it, I wouldn't have had the career that I've had, I've always owed it a great debt and it was very good to me, and hopefully I was good to it, and why not keep it that way? 'I've always believed that you should leave doors swinging rather than shut them.' Kemp, who went on to produce a number of documentaries since first leaving EastEnders in 1999 including Ross Kemp On Gangs, Ross Kemp In Afghanistan and Ross Kemp: Extreme World, said he enjoyed returning to the soap. He explained: 'It was so wonderful to jump into Grant's leather jacket again, which I can still get in. EastEnders' top 5 villains 'It's a family, it's an ongoing thing, and I'm talking about the past, and they're really busy doing their own thing, I just parachute in, and I exit generally by the tube station. 'But they've got to be welcoming, because it's like a high-speed train, you've got to jump on it at the right time or you miss it. 'So luckily, Steve McFadden (who plays Phil), and Paul Bradley (who plays Nigel Bates), and Letitia (Dean, who plays Sharon Watts) opened the door for me, and it was like going back home, and it was great.' Are Ross Kemp and Steve McFadden friends? Their brotherly love on-screen may have been tested over the years, but in real life Kemp and actor McFadden share a close relationship. 'We've [McFadden and I] always remained friends, but, yeah, we are more in touch since I've gone back for the 40th anniversary,' Kemp told The Mirror earlier this year. 'Steve is a fine actor and I don't think soap actors get recognised for how good they are.' Recommended reading: Kemp began on the soap in 1990, and his previous appearance prior to his 2025 return, in 2016, marked his on-screen mother Dame Barbara Windsor's final episode as Peggy Mitchell. Where does Ross Kemp live? Kemp lives in the picturesque Thames-side village of Cookham in Berkshire. He is well known within the community and has openly spoken about how he frequently visits nearby Marlow's restaurants.

Freely, meanwhile, has a huge catalogue of LGBTQ+ stories to stream, from inspiring documentaries to heartwarming comedy. The eight-parter is based on the memoir of award-winning author and trailblazing trans rights campaigner Paris Lees, chronicling her tumultuous upbringing in the 2000s. What It Feels Like For A Girl landed on BBC Three, BBC iPlayer, and Freely on June 3. The series follows Byron (played by Ellis Howard), who, desperate to break free from his small, working-class town, escapes to Nottingham's vibrant underworld on a quest of self-discovery and enlightenment. And reviews have heaped praise on the new BBC drama. The Guardian called it 'extraordinary' and 'a wild ride', while the Independent applauded its 'messy' and 'raw' nature. Freely is a relatively new way to stream live and on-demand shows for free in the UK, with content from the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5. It was launched in 2024 and replicates the terrestrial TV experience of browsing through a programme guide, but is accessed via WiFi.
