Former Browns RB Nyheim Hines ready for NFL return
The 2023 injury ruptured his ACL and LCL, requiring multiple surgeries. It has kept Hines out of the NFL for two seasons. The Cleveland Browns signed Hines last year, but placed him on the non-football injury list at the start of the season. The team released him in February of this year.
Hines isn't letting anything stop his comeback. He sat down with the Charlotte Observer on the anniversary of his accident to discuss his life and return to the NFL. Hines, a North Carolina native and North Carolina State alumnus, was candid when talking about his injury and motivations. Hines has faced a tough time recovering from his injury. The injury was a random, off-the-field, career-threatening injury. It was a struggle for him to deal with the senseless nature of the accident.
It was even harder going online and seeing people make callous remarks about the injury, dressed up as humorous. Hines relied on his family, therapist, agent, and trainer following his injury. He wasn't the only person in his family suffering from a debilitating medical emergency. Hines' mother, Nannette Miller, was placed on life support around the start of the 2023 NFL season. Over the next few months, she recovered from her medical scare and returned to their home in December. His family suffers from a genetic muscular dystrophy disease.
The disease took the life of his grandmother, Clotiel Miller, in 2004. His uncle also suffers from the disease. Hines got a tattoo on his left wrist featuring green ribbons, the symbol for muscular dystrophy awareness. Hines is motivated to resume his NFL career for himself and his family. While Hines never played a down for Cleveland, he did get a major takeaway from the Browns. Hines found a lot of motivation rehabbing besides Nick Chubb. He told the Observer:
'I would say my biggest inspiration is Nick Chubb. I met him month eight of my surgery (recovery) when I signed in April (2024). We did everything together. And he came off a catastrophic injury before this, so I leaned on him a lot.'
Hines is ready to resume his NFL career. He hasn't touched a field in over 900 days since his injury. However, he's prepared to play again. The NFL is in a state of constant desperation for special teams talent. Hines has been a dangerous return man during his NFL career. He should have an opportunity to play under the dynamic kick return rule. Hines is a special talent; it'd be a shame if he never got another shot in the NFL.

Rockies break longest shutout drought in MLB history by blanking Cardinals
The Colorado Rockies posted a long-awaited zero on Wednesday. With a 6-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals, the Rockies posted their first shutout in 220 games, ending the longest shutout streak in MLB's modern era (since 1900). Their last shutout was an 8-0 victory over the San Diego Padres on May 15, 2024. Per the only longer shutout droughts on record were the 1893-96 Washington Senators (383) and the 1897-99 St. Louis Browns/Perfectos (298), back when baseball was a very different sport. The pitchers responsible for the history were starting pitcher Tanner Gordon and relievers Jimmy Herget and Tyler Kinley, who combined to allow five hits total. From 'I did not know that,' Rockies interim manager Warren Schaeffer said. 'That's a long time — 220 games. I'm glad we shut them out today behind Gordon.' Obviously, playing half their games at the infamously hitter-friendly Coors Field didn't help the Rockies with their streak. Gordon was called up from Triple-A Albuquerque the same day, after the Rockies placed starting pitcher German Marquez on the 15-day injured list due to right biceps tendinitis. His start, the 12th of his career, was only the fourth time all season that a Rockies starter threw six or more shutout innings. Even though the historic streak is over, it reflects what has been a grotesquely bad season for the Rockies. Their record improved to 26-76, which is still by far the worst record in MLB. The next-worst team is the Chicago White Sox at 36-66. The Rockies are roughly on track to match the losses record the White Sox set last year at 41-121, with their current pace working out to an end-of-season 41.3-120.7. The Rox were in much worse territory earlier this season but have been merely bad since the start of June, with a 17-27 record. Their minus-247 run differential still puts them on pace for a minus-392 mark this season, which would surpass the 1932 Boston team (minus-345) for the worst of the modern era. Still, progress is progress when you're a team that had single-digit wins at the end of May. By taking two out of three games against the Cardinals this week and two of three against the Minnesota Twins last weekend, the Rockies posted their first back-to-back series wins of the year.

Tigers sent trade deadline message by former MLB player amid recent struggles
The Detroit Tigers are in a rough stretch after getting swept by the Pittsburgh Pirates this week. Detroit have won once in their last nine games, dropping series to the Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers, and now the Pirates. It's a long season and every team, regardless of how good they are, have their dips over a 162-game schedule. Nonetheless, this lousy stretch could be a sign for the Tigers to make a trade and inject fresh blood into the team ahead of the MLB trade deadline. On Tuesday's edition of 'Intentional Talk,' former MLB pitcher Ryan Dempster picked the Tigers when asked what team have to add to their current squad to bolster their chances of making the World Series this fall. MORE:Tigers predicted to land pair of Diamondbacks stars in blockbuster trade 'Everybody in this network knows how much I've been on the Detroit Tigers,' Dempster said. 'But you have to add — find one that has won a World Series in the past few years. Everybody adds; you have to inject your clubhouse with life. '[Tigers' president of baseball operations] Scott Harris, I know you're watching the show right now. He knows this. Impact arm, impact bat, get better. I'm not talking about a little bit. I'm not talking just a little piece. I'm talking a big piece. This is your time. You have this window. You have this great ballclub who is thirsty. 'They are hungry. They want to go get it. You have to add. If you expect to go to the World Series and go all the way, you need that impact bat or that impact arm or both. It doesn't matter who they are. Look at the numbers. Every team that wins adds somebody at some point during the season in order to get them over the hump.' Detroit's schedule isn't getting any easier, and their losing streak could stretch longer with a four-game series coming up against another strong American League team, the Toronto Blue Jays. The Tigers currently hold an eight-game lead over the Cleveland Guardians, so their division lead isn't in immediate danger. However, this slump could impact how they're viewed as serious World Series contenders. Because of that, Dempster might be right—making a bold move at the trade deadline could be exactly what the team needs to break out of this funk.
