The Rude Wedding Guest Behavior You May Be Guilty Of

Yahoo4 days ago
In the months leading up to her wedding day, Elizabeth was looking forward to seeing all of her guests, but she did not anticipate how much people would try to monopolize her time.
'Several of my husband's family friends, who I'd barely even met, kept coming up to me during the reception and then they would proceed to talk for 20 minutes,' she recalled to HuffPost.
Once, she was stopped for a long conversation while trying to awkwardly balance plates and drinks for herself and the groom on the way to their table. And she almost didn't make the group photo with the couple's college friends because a guest she was speaking with wouldn't let her end their chat.
'It was sweet because clearly they were excited to be there and wanted to catch up, and obviously I wanted to say hi to as many people as I could ― but this was more than just a greeting,' said Elizabeth, who preferred to share only her first name. 'They just had no awareness of time and the context.'
Of course, most newlyweds want to spend time with their wedding guests —hey, that's why they were invited in the first place — but if they were to have a lengthy conversation with every single person, there would be no time for dining, dancing, cutting the cake or anything else. Thus, it's an etiquette no-no to demand extra time or attention from the happy couple.
'To be a gracious guest, you have to be aware that the bride and groom have a lot of people to see and thank and be mindful not to monopolize their time,' said Jacqueline Whitmore, an etiquette expert and founder of The Protocol School of Palm Beach. 'But a lot of people don't have that kind of common sense.'
So what's the best way to share a moment with the newlyweds at the wedding? Below, Whitmore and other etiquette experts share their dos and don'ts.
Keep the conversation brief.
'The bridal couple is rightly in high demand on their special day,' said Thomas P. Farley, aka 'Mister Manners.' 'Particularly if there are a great number of attendees, guests should not dominate the attention of the newlyweds with long conversations.'
He advised keeping the congratulations and chatter to a minute or two. Offer your well wishes and compliment the wedding dress, food, ceremony, venue or band.
'If guests have had the chance to speak with the couple at least once during the occasion, they should not attempt to co-opt additional time, unless circumstances permit,' Farley added.
You can also spend more time with the newlyweds by joining them and the other guests on the dance floor. Making memories together doesn't always involve talking.
Nick Leighton, an etiquette expert and co-host of the 'Were You Raised by Wolves?' podcast, believes the amount of time you'll want to talk with the couple is on a bell curve and based on how close you are.
'If you're super close with the couple and hang out with them all the time, it's fine to be brief,' he said. 'Similarly, if you're such a distant acquaintance that you were surprised to even be invited, your chat with the newlyweds can also be relatively quick. But in the middle, the time you spend will often be slightly longer given there'll often be a bit of catching-up on everyone's lives involved.'
Keep it light.
'Guests should also ensure they keep conversation light and breezy,' Farley said.
Avoid politics, family squabbles, drunken ramblings or important conversations they'd need to remember in the future. This is not the time to share big news or choose a date to grab lunch together.
'The Champagne is flowing, the relief is showing, and the occasion is flying by for them at hyper speed,' he added. 'Guests can focus their energies on the other guests in attendance and catch up with the couple after they've returned from their honeymoon.'
Take advantage of the receiving line.
'Rather than continually seeking them out at various points during the reception, guests should have their words with the pair on the receiving line ― if there is one ― or on the dance floor,' Farley said. 'A benefit of the former strategy is it all but guarantees getting to speak with both members of the couple at once, which may prove difficult or impossible once the reception begins.'
Instead of a receiving line, many couples take time to make the rounds and greet every table during dinner. Similarly, consider this your designated moment to share your thanks and congratulations or get a photo together.
Take cues from the couple.
'The best way to speak with the wedding couple is by being aware of your surroundings,' said Jodi R.R. Smith, president of Mannersmith Etiquette Consulting.
Pay attention to what's going on. If you would like to have a slightly longer chat at some point, don't try to do it while the newlyweds are occupied, stressed out or en route to cut the cake.
'Take your cues from the couple,' Smith advised. 'If there is a crowd forming or if the couples' eyes are glazing, it is time to more along.'
Say you look forward to catching up at a later date.
The wedding reception is not really the time to have a full catch-up with the newly married couple, so if you want the the chance to have a proper conversation with them, mention that you'd love to get together sometime in the future.
'I would suggest for a wedding guest, you go up to the couple, offer your congratulations, say how beautiful the bride looks and then add something like 'Thank you so much for inviting us, we'll definitely have you and Jim over for dinner when you come back from your honeymoon!'' Whitmore said.
Then give them a hug and carry on enjoying the rest of the event, food and dance floor with your fellow guests. You can reach out and make a concrete plan with the newlyweds at a later date.
Accept that you might not get to talk at all.
Etiquette guidelines dictate that newlyweds should try to greet all of their guests at some point during the event, but at larger weddings, people inevitably slip through the cracks.
'You may not get to talk with the bride or groom at all,' etiquette expert Juliet Mitchell, also known as Ms. J, told HuffPost. 'The wedding is a gathering of friends, family and sometimes associates. The bride and wedding planner have taken under consideration who will be there, where they will sit, dance, etc. so that they can interact, engage and socialize with each other. One-to-one conversation may not happen. Be OK with that, and if you are a friend, connect with them after the wedding.
Don't worry about saying goodbye.
Unless you happen to pass by them on your way out, you also don't have to have a farewell moment with the happy couple ― unless they specifically asked you to.
'Guests should not feel the need to say goodbye to the couple prior to leaving ― especially if they will be departing before the end of the night,' Farley said. 'Rather, an Irish exit is entirely appropriate here, letting the celebration and merriment continue without an external reminder that the night is drawing to a close.'

Bachelor Nation stars, including Gabby Windey and Nick Viall, are returning to reality dating TV as hosts of their own shows

Windey and Viall are among the the latest 'Bachelor' franchise alums announced as hosts of brand-new reality shows. What happens after you appear on a reality dating series? For these Bachelor Nation alums, the next step is to host one. In the past week, Bachelor and Bachelorette stars Gabby Windey, Nick Viall and his wife, Natalie, as well as Kaitlyn Bristowe and Colton Underwood, have all been chosen to host different reality TV dating shows for Netflix and Hulu. Bristowe and Underwood are the latest Bachelor Nation stars turned reality TV cohosts. The pair, who had respective stints as leads of The Bachelorette and The Bachelor, were announced on Monday as the hosts of Hulu's upcoming reality dating series Are You My First? which follows a group of virgins as they journey to find a lasting romantic love. The show is set to premiere on Aug. 18, with all 10 episodes dropping at once. The Vialls, meanwhile, were announced as hosts of Netflix's age-gap reality dating series Age of Attraction on July 17. Windey, another Bachelor Nation alum who has emerged as a reality TV queen since her stint on Season 3 of The Traitors, will also return to the small screen, this time as the host of Love Overboard, a new reality dating series under Alex Cooper's Unwell Productions. Here's everything we know about these new dating shows so far. 'Are You My First?' First times, first loves and first heartbreaks are at the forefront of Hulu's upcoming reality dating series Are You My First? hosted by Kaitlyn Bristowe and Colton Underwood. Hulu's official synopsis of the show describes it as a 'groundbreaking new dating experiment' featuring 'the largest, hottest group of virgins ever assembled' as they 'search for intimacy, love — and maybe their first — in a tropical paradise designed just for them. For the first time, they're free to explore their connections without judgment, allowing these sexy young singles to embark on a heated yet heartfelt journey packed with romantic dates, revealing challenges, and new love interests eager to find 'the one.' Who will find that special someone? And who will go home hot, bothered and heartbroken?' Bristowe famously appeared on Season 19 of The Bachelor, and then once more as the lead on Season 11 of The Bachelorette. Underwood, before making history as the first lead in Bachelor franchise history to come out as gay, competed on Season 14 of The Bachelorette. All 10 episodes of Are You My First? will be released on Hulu on Aug. 18. 'Age of Attraction' Netflix announced that Viall and his wife, Natalie, who is 18 years his junior, are set to host an unscripted reality TV series called Age of Attraction. The show, according to Variety, will see a group of singles between ages 22 and 59 as they explore connections with one another to see if it's meant to last. The show, per Netflix, is described as a 'new dating experiment' that suggests 'it simply does not matter how many candles were on your last birthday cake or how few wrinkles have formed on your forehead.' Viall and Joy will help cast members 'search for their soulmates' and find out if 'age is just a number.' The eight-episode series, which was filmed in Whistler and Vancouver, British Columbia, is set to premiere sometime in 2026. 'Love Overboard' Windey, who made her Bachelor Nation debut as a contestant on Clayton Echard's season of The Bachelor in 2022 before costarring on Season 19 of The Bachelorette alongside Rachel Recchia, is returning to reality television — this time as a host. Alex Cooper's Unwell Productions has tapped Windey to host Love Overboard, a new reality dating series that takes place on a luxury yacht where contestants will compete for love and gain access to specific amenities based on how well their journeys are going. Hulu announced Windey as the show's host on July 14. According to the show's official press release, 'Get ready to hit the high seas with 'Love Overboard'! Step aboard the ultimate luxury yacht, where sexy singles are ready to mix and mingle … and find love. But there's a twist … gaining access to the yacht's extravagant amenities won't be so simple. As the journey unfolds, romance ignites; alliances form; and hearts are shattered. In the end, only one couple will reign supreme. Who will rise to the top, and who will be left stranded?' While an official release date hasn't been set, Love Overboard is expected to debut in 2026. Solve the daily Crossword

Jessica Simpson Hints at Her Divorce From Eric Johnson in the Lyrics to Her Latest Single

Gilbert Carrasquillo There's a very good chance that Jessica Simpson's ex-husband Eric Johnson is a having a 'Is this fucking play about us?' moment right now, assuming he's heard the lyrics to the pop singer's latest single, 'Fade.' Because they do seem rather pointed. The song begins with a bit of a body blow, with Simpson singing in the first verse, 'You can always say you love me/That doesn't mean that I feel loved/There's a green light in the distance/And all your words become too much.' She goes on to reference, well, us, when she sings in another verse, 'They're gonna talk, but it's not their business/The stars align and sometimes burn,' which seems to indicate that the track is autobiographical. And that makes this part: 'I want my heart to feel held safe/I know that home is a feeling/And not a place/Oh, there won't be a next time/Cause I won't break,' feel especially emotional because it seems to hint at what caused the split. On Instagram, Simpson wrote of writing the song, 'I was in a rough place when the day came around for this writing session, however I was not going to crawl under my sheets, hide, and cry. Instead, I chose to rise and shine. It immediately encouraged confrontation to heal a layer of pain.' And in a press release per Us Weekly, Simpson said, 'This song came straight from my heart.' She continued, 'I walked into the studio with tears still on my cheeks, and what came out was a prayer. 'Fade' is about watching someone you love slip away in real time, while trying to hold on to something that's already gone.' The track is off of Simpson's latest album, Nashville Canyon Part 1, which dropped on March 21, two months after she announced her divorce from Johnson. In her statement, Simpson said, "Eric and I have been living separately navigating a painful situation in our marriage. Our children come first, and we are focusing on what is best for them. We are grateful for all of the love and support that has been coming our way, and appreciate privacy right now as we work through this as a family.' But while Simpson kept it amicable in her public statements, she's clearly been a little more candid in her song lyrics, and not just in 'Fade.' In the song 'Blame Me,' Simpson sings, 'Go tell your mama, your friends/All at my expense/I couldn't care any less if you shame me/Go on, blame me.' And in 'Leave,' Simpson sings about 'unholy matrimony' and even hints at infidelity. 'What we had was magic, now you made it tragic/Giving her what you gave to me,' she sings in the first verse.
