A Reddit user has ignited an online discussion and debate after posting that their partner keeps asking them to 'lower your volume' — even though they say they're just excited, not screaming.
The anonymous user, who goes by u/Farts2Long (yes, really), brought their relationship beef to the infamous r/AmITheA–hole forum, explaining that their voice naturally gets louder when they're engaged in conversation.
'Sometimes when I get excited about a topic, I naturally start speaking louder than usual,' they wrote.
They added, 'Not shouting, just louder than normal conversation level. The thing is, I don't realize I'm doing it in the moment.'
But their partner isn't a fan of the verbal volume.
The poster noted that their significant other will often interrupt them 'mid-sentence,' asking them to 'lower' their volume.
The Redditor acknowledged that this likely isn't 'in a mean or rude way,' but stressed that it still makes them feel dismissed and discouraged.
Redditors rushed to weigh in, with over 12,000 upvotes and hundreds of mixed opinions.
'I lose my enthusiasm and no longer feel like talking about the thing I was excited about,' the original poster continued.
While many commenters agreed the partner's request was reasonable, others urged empathy and better communication.
'I get it, you're happy to be speaking to someone who cares about something you care about,' one wrote.
'However, speaking as someone whose partner is the same as you in this situation, it's very hard to be sat trying to engage with someone when they are essentially shouting in your face.'
Another chimed in, 'You have every right to feel how you feel, but it also does sound like you may be disregarding how it makes them feel.'
Relationship expert Angelika Koch, of the LGBTQ+ dating app Taimi, recently told Newsweek that timing and tone are crucial when addressing someone's volume.
'Telling someone mid-sentence that they're being loud, even if it's well-intentioned, can feel a bit humiliating,' she explained. 'Most people don't even notice when their voice rises.'
Koch suggested couples use a subtle hand signal or touch to gently flag the issue. 'Over time, they might even start to catch themselves,' she said.
'But this can only happen if they don't feel like their personality is being attacked.'
If couples are looking for ways to speak up without ruining an entire conversation, they might take a cue from psychotherapist Amy Morin.
Morin previously told CNBC Make It that mentally strong couples lean on a few key phrases to keep things cool and constructive.
Among them? 'I'm going to tell you something that may be upsetting to hear,' and 'It's understandable you feel that way.'
The goal: empathy, ownership, and solution-seeking.
'Taking responsibility for your share increases the chances that your partner will accept responsibility for theirs, too,' Morin said, as previously reported by The Post.
'Then you can both put your energy into developing a solution.'

Gen Z and millennials have radically different views on GLP-1s like Ozempic and how much they want the weight loss and diabetes drugs regulated, according to a new report from GLP-1 prescription weight loss company Levity. At 31 percent, millennials were the most likely to favor fewer GLP-1 regulations compared to 19 percent of the group who wanted more. Gen Z, meanwhile, favored stricter rules at 37 percent, while 32 percent wanted fewer. "Millennials are more likely to be prescribed a GLP-1 as compared to Gen Z; therefore, it is not surprising that millennials desire less regulation on these drugs," Richard Frank, MD, MHSA, and chief medical officer at Vida Health, told Newsweek. "Having said that, the regulatory environment surrounding compounded agents, in general, and compounded GLP-1s, specifically, is not as rigorous as it is for branded and generic drugs. Therefore, compounded drugs carry unknown risks that more regulated medications do not." Because semaglutide is no longer on the FDA shortage list, compounding it can carry legal risks. Already, the effects are being felt, as 17 percent of GLP-1 users said it has become harder to get their medication since the FDA tightened rules on compounded semaglutide, Levity reported. There was also a difference in how the generations viewed their use of the drugs. While 75 percent of GLP-1 users believed they'll still be on their treatment plan a year from now, Gen Z was the least likely to think so, at 58 percent. What People Are Saying Board-certified endocrinologist Dr. Caroline Messer told Newsweek: "Millennials, many of whom are now managing midlife weight and metabolic health concerns, may see GLP-1s as a practical tool and want fewer barriers. We all need quality sleep to function properly during the day, but it gets even more important when you're pregnant. The irony? That's also when sleep gets harder. With a lot of nighttime activity in the womb, you can get less sleep at a time when you need more sleep. A recent Reddit thread also shows many moms-to-be experiencing the same, leading to more fatigue during the day. I spoke to several experts to see why this tends to be a common experience among expectant parents, and they shared some tips on how to get a restful night's sleep. Why fetuses move more at nighttime Sleeping may feel tough during pregnancy but there are ways to make the experience better. Getty Images Chances are, during the evening hours, you're starting to unwind from the day. But if you're pregnant, you may notice your fetus does the opposite and starts to become more active during this period. "This could be because, during the regular day, the moving and swaying of a person's normal actions soothes the baby and helps the baby rest," says Dr. Susan Crowe, an obstetrician-gynecologist and clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology in maternal fetal health at Stanford Medicine. Dr. Ila Dayananda, an obstetrician-gynecologist and chief medical officer of Oula Health, says that during the day, the motion of an awake and moving parent might have a calming effect on a fetus. Another theory is that, during the later part of the day, especially when the pregnant person is reclined, the fetus may have more room to move around. The fetus may also become more active at nighttime because of lower blood sugar levels or Dayananda's other theory: "There's also the belief that the fetus is establishing its own circadian rhythm and is in the process of discovering the difference between day and night," she said. Dr. Andrea Desai, a maternal and fetal medicine specialist at University of Maryland Medical Center, agrees: "As the fetal organs nervous system develops, they develop their own circadian rhythm, as in their sleep-wake cycle, and pattern it just like we have." The good news is fetal movement in the evening is a positive sign of your baby's well-being. Keeping track of your baby's movements is a helpful way to prevent stillbirth or determine if there may be something wrong. The American Pregnancy Association recommends you keep track of their movement starting at 28 weeks (or the beginning of the third trimester). The goal is to choose a time of day you know your fetus is most active (often at night) and to count up to 10 movements in a span of two hours. "There is no right or wrong time to feel movement and every pregnant patient will learn what to expect along the way, with guidance from their doctors," Desai says. "Kick counts are a tool for pregnant patients to use at home to reassure themselves of their baby's movements if they are concerned that the movement is less than they expect it to be," she adds. All that fetal movement can sometimes make for an uncomfortable experience. I can definitely vouch for this as I've been jabbed plenty of times in the ribcage and experienced double kicks from my baby. On the other hand, for some people the movement isn't so much the issue at bedtime, but the extra pressure on their bladder is. This can lead to more visits to the bathroom throughout the night, which also disrupts sleep in its own way. If this is your predicament (and as long as you aren't dehydrated), try to cut back on liquids two to three hours before bed. What you can do to improve your sleep If the fetal movement and other changes during pregnancy are dampening your ability to sleep, there are some things you can do to improve it. "One thing we'd encourage for pregnant people that have an issue due to an active fetus at nighttime is to try and lie down for about an hour before they go to sleep or initiate their sleeping routine," Crowe says. The reason is that during this time you can bond with your baby and hopefully the extra interaction will tire them out before you turn in. "This gives the parent-to-be a chance to enjoy the interaction of fetal movement and have more flexibility in mitigating discomfort as opposed to when they are trying to sleep," Crowe adds. Dr. Nisarg Patel, an obstetrician-gynecologist at Clinic Spots, advises creating a calming routine before bed. "You can try drinking warm tea and doing light stretching exercises before bedtime to relax the body and reduce the chance of extra movement in the womb," he says. But most importantly, he recommends avoiding using electronic devices or eating a heavy meal before bed as they can easily disrupt sleep, whether you're pregnant or not. Desai suggests avoiding strenuous activity before bed, not going to bed on a stomach filled with sugary snacks or stimulants such as caffeine. As a final resort, you can consider taking a sleeping aid. "Sleep aids to treat insomnia, like melatonin or doxylamine like Unisom, may be helpful, but should only be used after a discussion with a doctor," Desai warns. Additionally, you'll want to avoid sleeping on your back for long periods of time starting in the second through the third trimester. Instead, during that time you should start sleeping on your left or right side as your pregnancy progresses. "Pregnant people should not sleep flat on their back without support as it can compromise circulation," Crowe says. "To optimize circulation and alleviate discomfort, it's recommended to use pillows to prop up or support sleeping in more lateral positions and to support comfortability." You can also sleep with a pregnancy pillow to offer proper support if you're not used to sleeping on your side. There are plenty of options on the market that are designed to support your back, belly, hips and knees.
