James Haskell has revealed the truth behind his divorce from Chloe Madeley, describing the end of their marriage as "awful" and "dark".
The former England rugby player split from personal trainer Madeley, who is the daughter of television personalities Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan, in 2023, five years after the were married. Initially, they decided to keep the reasons for their separation private, but Madeley later described the time leading up to their parting as "incredibly scary".

Haskell has now spoken out, admitting his drinking was the key factor in their split.

"If I put more time into my marriage than I did Guinness, then I wouldn't be divorced now," he confessed to MailOnline while at Pub in the Park festival in west London.
"It's one of those things in life where some things don't work out, but I have so much love for my daughter and Chloe. It's teamwork."
Their daughter Bodhi was just one year old at the time of their breakup, which was announced in a joint statement.

"What we all forget is when you have children and a marriage finishes, it's all about the kids," he added. "Chloe and I are amazing co-parents. Our priority is always Bodhi."
Madeley previously refused to delve into the reasons for her divorce, expressing that she wanted to protect her child, Bodhi, from the "dark and painful experiences" she went through. Speaking to The Sun, she remarked: "When you tell people that you are divorcing, everyone sees it as such a negative thing," before clarifying: "They say: 'This is going to be so hard for you.' And, yes, it is, but the hardest bit was when we were married."
She candidly shared that "the last year of the marriage was awful" adding: "It was so dark, painful, and one of the worst periods of my life. It's a good thing we ended it."

Haskell has also spoken about the recent death of his father, Jonathan, which was announced on Saturday after a long illness.
He said: 'We have lost the cornerstone of our faamily. He was an amazing man. He always encouraged me to work.
'Every time I said to him, 'Shall I take a day off?' he would rather I worked.'

The announcement of Haskell and Madeley's separation came via a joint statement from Madeley and Haskell in October 2023, following their appearance on the ITV show Chloe Madeley: A Family Affair. They declared: "Chloe and I mutually decided to separate at the end of September 2023," further stating, "We had not planned on releasing a statement at this time – certainly not while the television show was airing – but constant speculation about our marriage has, unfortunately, forced our hand."

She went on to affirm: "Beyond this statement, we will not be speaking about this matter publicly, and we would request privacy at this time."

The couple emphasised their daughter's wellbeing, saying: "Our sole focus now is our beautiful daughter. We shall continue to co-parent with nothing but love."
In February 2023, Madeley disclosed that she returned to her job as a personal trainer merely eight weeks post childbirth due to financial necessity.
The fitness expert, who gave birth to her daughter in August 2022, stated that despite her then-husband's substantial earnings, they didn't have a joint account and her sense of "pride" propelled her back to work.

Haskell has also revealed he's now single, having dated advertising executive Helen Barclay and Big Brother star Sara McLean, 35, earlier this year.
The sportsman said he's not currently on the search for his next partner, insisting his priority is "being the best dad in the best order".
Haskell split from Sara in March - two days after going public with their relationship.

Netflix viewers race to watch 'mesmerising' drama based on true story

It looks like Netflix subscribers are discovering a Sheridan Smith crime drama that first aired on ITV in 2012, based on a shocking true crime story. Mrs Biggs is climbing up the streamer's ranking of the platform's top 10 TV shows – making a convincing argument for a late summer binge watch. Sheridan Smith – who has so many British dramas to her name it can be easy to let one slip – stars in this five-part drama, which is based on the true story of the Great Train Robbery. The drama focuses on the relationship between Charmian, played by Smith, and her husband Ronnie Biggs, played by Daniel Mays. It follows everything from their first lovestruck meeting and the fateful 1963 train heist, to its aftermath and their eventual divorce in 1976, after Biggs fathered a child in Brazil. We see the petty crook meet his soon-to-be wife on, of all places, a train. 'The future is full of possibilities,' he tells her. 'The past will only drag you down.' With that, the Biggs couple set off on a crime spree before they eventually decide to settle down for a quiet married life. That is, until the 'one last job' pops up in the chance to join the train robbers. Biggs's ex-wife Charmian was also a consultant on the show. The show's writer and executive producer Jeff Pope said he wanted to set out a romantic tale, rather than a romanticised one. 'We show Ron as perhaps a little too wilfully optimistic and Charmian is the cold voice of reason throughout. It absolutely would be a danger of a piece like this to romanticise it,' he told The Guardian. 'It will get laughed out of court if it's a slushfest. In the first episode, they steal, he strikes her, we acknowledge the fact he had a criminal record; further down the line, Charmian has an abortion by another man. We don't pull back, we don't flinch.' In 1963, millions were robbed from a Royal Mail train en route to London from Glasgow. With the help of inside information, the gang of crooks toyed with the train signal system to get the train to stop so they could board. £2.61million was nabbed, which was worth about £62million in 2023. Most of the cash was never recovered. The gang hid at a farm after the robbery, but police found the spot, including a Monopoly board they had used which was covered in incriminating fingerprints. The evidence led to the eventual arrest and conviction of most of the gang. Praised at the time of its release for the quality of the acting and the excitement of the episodes, TV viewers have shared their positive reception over the years, as Mrs Biggs has been available on ITVX as well as Netflix. Taking to X, @AshWoody90 praised: 'Mrs Biggs on Netflix, possibly one the best things I have ever watched.' @elliot_gonzalez commended the creative partnership between the show's writer and star, writing: 'Jeff Pope and Sheridan Smith should always work together. Mrs Biggs, The Widower, Cilla and now The Moorside. All outstanding work.' More Trending @TVChatty wrote: 'All week I've been watching Mrs Biggs on ITV3. Why did I not watch it first time? Fantastic story and great acting. Really enjoyed it.' @lizcurran echoed: 'Sheridan Smith is wonderful in Mrs Biggs – she is one of my favourite actors. Utterly mesmerising – always.' Born on 19 August 1969, Matthew Langford Perry spent his childhood in Ottawa, Canada, following his parents' separation. He was brought up primarily by his mother, Suzanne, a journalist who went on to work as press secretary for former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. Meanwhile, his father, American actor John Bennett Perry, pursued a career in Hollywood, making their relationship difficult and often distant. The physical separation and John's growing success meant father and son saw little of each other in Matthew's early years. Matthew had his first alcoholic drink when he was just 14 years old. During an interview with Canadian broadcaster Tom Power, he opened up on the pivotal moment and how it sparked a decades-long battle. 'I drank the entire bottle and just felt better than I ever had in my entire life,' he said at the time. 'I thought to myself this is probably what normal people feel like all the time.'
