Netflix's 'female John Wick' thriller with 91% score that's better than Keanu Reeves spin-off

It was released before the actual female-led spin off movie
A Netflix action thriller film is a 'female John Wick' that according to critics is better than the Keanu Reeves spin-off.

Earlier this year, Ana de Armas starred in the hotly anticipated movie set within the same universe of the hit franchise. The No Time To Die and Knives Out star took on the role of a ballerina turned assassin, who avenges the death of her father.

However, back in 2023, a movie that just so happened to share the same name, was released on the streaming giant's platform. It also shared similarities in its themes and premise. It's no wonder, many viewers were quick to also dub it a ' female John Wick ' before fans actually got that film from the studio.

A South Korean made production, the film's story follows Ok-ju, who is grieving the loss of a best friend she could not protect Herself a former bodyguard, she sets out to fulfil her dear friend's last wish: sweet, sweet revenge.
It managed an impressive 91% rating on website Rotten Tomatoes following its initial release. Critics were impressed with the action and overall aesthetic of the movie.

One reviewer wrote: "Ballerina is one of the best-looking films of the year, and it features some of the best action that I have ever seen."
Another, quick to compare it to the Keanu Reeves led series added: "It's not as refined but it's basically John Wick meets Kill Bill! Jeon Jong-seo was incredible and Kim Ji-hoon is great as the villain. Badass fights, amazing soundtrack - go watch this movie!"

Many fans share a similar opinion, as one posted online: "Ballerina isn't your typical revenge flick — it's an emotion-fuelled rage spiral wrapped in neon, blood, and minimalist storytelling. Think of it like John Wick met Drive and then had a silent breakdown in a parking lot at 3AM. It's slick, sad, and beautifully brutal."
They continued: "What makes Ballerina hit hard is its aesthetic and tone. This isn't a dialogue-heavy film. Ok-ju barely speaks. The plot doesn't spoon-feed you. It trusts the audience to feel it. Her grief? Internal. Her fury? Explosive. Her movements? Silent but surgical. She's not here to philosophise. She's here to end the rot — one bullet, one blade, one scumbag at a time.
"The film doesn't waste time on fluff. It's lean, mean, and visually stunning. Cinematography is chef's kiss — lots of long takes, moody lighting, gritty pink-neon textures, and empty spaces that mirror her emotional void. The violence is fast, artistic, almost balletic — which, no doubt, ties beautifully into the metaphor of the title."
Someone else commented: "Thrilling, very well written and directed. Ballerina is action revenge flick that full of personality, good performances and unique style. Of course the movie not add nothing new in the genre, but technically is impeccable. Overall is one of this year best gems."

The Dumfries-born star has caused quite a stir on the programme, appearing to be involved in this year's big love triangle, reports The Record. Reacting to teaser clips of the episodes yet to come, which shows Katisha visibly upset, it appears her husband-to-be, Javen, is flirting with one of the co-stars at a group mixer. Fans have taken to social media to say they have 'no sympathy' for Katisha, as they voiced their thoughts. "Katisha really trying hard to convince herself self she made the right choice with Javen. Lady Gaga delivers chilling warning as she makes her Wednesday debut in new season two trailer

A familiar face is making her Wednesday debut. Lady Gaga delivers a chilling warning in the latest trailer for the second part of season two of the hit Netflix series. Gaga, 39, doesn't physically appear in the new sneak peek but her voice ominously ends the trailer, seemingly cautioning Wednesday (Jenna Ortega, 22) about the consequences of her actions. 'Beware - there will be a price to pay,' Gaga whispers in a haunting tone. Gaga is set to play Rosaline Rotwood, a 'legendary Nevermore teacher who crosses paths with Wednesday,' the streamer previously revealed. The new trailer begins with Wednesday awakening at a hospital and meeting her spirit guide, the late Principal Weems (Gwendoline Christie). 'Principal Weems!?' a perplexed Wednesday says before Weems offers her a sponge bath. 'What kind of hell is this?' she continues. 'This isn't hell Miss Adams. But I understand the confusion,' she informs Wednesday. 'If I'm not dead, then why are you here?' Wednesday asks. 'Because I am your new spirit guide,' she tells Wednesday. 'Surprise!' Meanwhile, Tyler Galpin (Hunter Doohan) is still on the loose - and is targeting Wednesday and Enid (Emma Myers). 'I'm going to fix it,' Wednesday tells Enid. 'Fix it!? You're the reason he escaped!' Enid replies. 'She's got a point,' Wednesday's new spirit guide says, earning a rebuke from her mentee. 'Stay out of this!' Wednesday replies back sharply. 'Who are you talking to?' Enid asks. 'No one,' Wednesday responds sternly. Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzman also return as Wednesday's parents, Morticia and Gomez Addams, respectively. 'Every family has dark chapters, Wednesday,' Morticia informs her daughter. 'If there's ever a time to unburden yourself with the truth, now is it,' Wednesday says, seemingly in reference to her parents. The second part of season two will debut on September 3. Netflix officially announced Gaga's season two cameo during the Tudum 2025 live event back in May. The pop singer lit up the Kia Forum with an 8-minute medley of hits, including her latest single Abracadabra, all in honor of the streamer's smash series Wednesday. Emerging from a coffin marked 'Here Lies the Mother Queen,' Gaga leaned all the way into the spooky aesthetic, surrounded by dancers channeling the Addams Family. She even busted out the viral dance from Season 1, originally performed by the show's lead Jenna Ortega to The Cramps' Goo Goo Muck — which famously went viral when it was mashed up with Gaga's own track Bloody Mary. And in a full-circle moment that brought the house down, Gaga welcomed Ortega herself to the stage. Netflix posted on their X account: 'Welcome to Nevermore, Mother Monster.' They added: 'Lady Gaga will guest star in Wednesday Season 2 Part 2 as Rosaline Rotwood — a legendary Nevermore teacher who crosses paths with Wednesday.' The streaming giant revealed the pop icon shot her role in a single day while filming on location in Ireland. Her casting was first leaked back in November. The role of Wednesday Addams in the film adaptations was previously made iconic by Christina Ricci.
