PTPTN disburses RM193,000 in takaful benefits to families of FRU tragedy victims
THE National Higher Education Fund Corp (PTPTN) has provided RM193,000 in total Simpan SSPN takaful benefits and death compensation to the families of two Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel who died in a recent accident in Perak.
The contribution was made under the agency's Ziarah Kasih PTPTN corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme, which also saw a RM15,000 cash donation distributed to 15 children of the deceased, with each receiving RM1,000 through a Simpan SSPN Prime account.
The main recipients of the protection benefits were the next-of-kin of Sergeant Mohd Roslan Abd Rahim and Corporal Amiruddin Zabri.
Mohd Roslan, 46, had opened a Simpan SSPN Prime account on May 7, 2025, making him eligible for RM1,000 in takaful coverage and RM3,000 in death benefit payout.
In addition, he had subscribed to three Simpan SSPN Plus accounts under the Intan package for his children in 2019, entitling his beneficiaries to RM180,000 in accident death coverage and RM9,000 in funeral aid.
Combined, the family of Mohd Roslan received RM193,000 in total from both Simpan SSPN Prime and Simpan SSPN Plus.

Meanwhile, Amiruddin's family received RM4,000, consisting of RM1,000 in takaful benefits and RM3,000 in 'khairat kematian' under the SSPN Prime plan he had subscribed to.
PTPTN chairman Datuk Seri Norliza Abdul Rahim and other PTPTN officials visited five homes of the FRU accident victims in Perak recently.
'These contributions, though unable to replace the loss of a loved one, are hoped to ease the burden on their families and ensure the education of their children is secured,' she said in a statement.
She added that PTPTN remains committed to safeguarding access to education through savings plans like Simpan SSPN, which offers tax reliefs of up to RM8,000 annually, free matching grants of up to RM10,000, competitive dividends, Shariah-compliance and full government guarantees.
Nine FRU personnel were killed and nine others injured when the truck they were in collided with a gravel-laden lorry on Jalan Chikus-Sungai Lampam, Teluk Intan, while returning to their base in Sungai Senam, Teluk Intan, on the morning of May 13, 2025.

TAR UMT launches RM1m Silent Fund with alumnus
TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN UNIVERSITY of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) held the official launch of its 'Silent TAR UMT Fund', made possible through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) ceremony between The Silent Foundation and TAR UMT. The Silent Foundation is a registered charity in Singapore and was founded by Teng Ngiek Lian, a TAR UMT alumnus and philanthropist, whose main aim is to support those often forgotten or overlooked by society, the 'silent sufferers' who are frequently without a voice. The partnership between TAR UMT and The Silent Foundation will pave the way for a lifetime pledge of RM1 million annually by the founder Teng to TAR UMT in order to support activities involving TAR UMT students. The contribution will be allocated to three key areas of advancing research in frontier technologies, promoting racial harmony between TAR UMT students together with students from other institutions, through student exchange programmes, cultural activities, sport and many other programmes. The foundation will also undertake initiatives to nurture socially responsible student leaders who promote kindness, sustainability and loyalty to TAR UMT. The launch ceremony was graced by Tan Sri Chan Kong Choy, Chairman of TAR UMT's Board of Governors and Alumni Council, Prof Dato' Indera Dr Lee Sze Wei, President of TAR UMT and Teng, the founder and executive chairman of the newly established foundation for TAR UMT. Teng, who was born in Terengganu, came from humble beginnings, as his father worked as a wooden clog maker. He completed his studies at TAR UMT, and qualified as a chartered certified accountant as well as chartered secretary. Eventually after his rise up the corporate ladder, he founded his own asset management business, which today is worth US1.5 billion, establishing him as a corporate leader and philanthropist. At TAR UMT, during his studies, he had a mentor, the late YS Chong who took Teng under his wing, and guided and mentored him, also helping Teng find a job to fund his studies, and succeed in his ambition to complete his studies. Teng excelled in his ACCA exams, winning world prizes twice, but till today remembers his roots and has come to give back in terms of supporting the 'silent sufferers', the voiceless, and in a minority wherever they go. As an alumnus of TAR UMT, Teng founded 'The Silent TAR UMT Fund' to provide assistance when needed to those who qualify within the categories set. As Teng explained, there were many silent sufferers in need of help. 'This is why I call my foundation, 'The Silent Foundation'. 'Our definition of silent sufferers includes both animals, the environment and human beings as long as they are overlooked and are not getting sufficient assistance from the public at large,' said Teng. Chan said, 'Over the years, Teng built an illustrious career in the world of investment, eventually founding his own firm managing billions in assets. But what stands out most is not his financial success, but his unwavering sense of purpose. He never forgot where he came from. He never forgot TAR College.'

Masidi rubbishes Shafie's claim over RM1 billion bond
Published on: Thursday, August 14, 2025 Published on: Thu, Aug 14, 2025 Text Size: Masidi (left) also dismissed Shafie's (right) earlier claim that the bond's full repayment in 2019 was an extraordinary achievement of the Warisan administration, calling it 'misleading' and 'contrary to documented facts.' Kota Kinabalu: State Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun rubbished Parti Warisan President Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal's allegation that RM500 million from the State Government's RM1 billion bond proceeds was spent in another state, describing the claim as 'both unfounded and irresponsible.' 'Such a serious claim, made without a shred of credible evidence, misleads the public and undermines trust in the State's financial management,' said Masidi in a statement, Wednesday. Citing official records, Masidi said the RM1 billion State Government of Sabah Bonds (2014/2019) proceeds were used entirely for Sabah's purposes – RM544 million to repay the first State Government bond issued in 2009 and RM456 million to finance State development projects under the approved 2014 State Budget. He also dismissed Shafie's earlier claim that the bond's full repayment in 2019 was an extraordinary achievement of the Warisan administration, calling it 'misleading' and 'contrary to documented facts.' He said Shafie's Aug 12 statement gave the public the false impression that the RM1 billion repayment was pulled off within a single year through the Warisan government's financial acumen. 'The facts tell a different story. When the RM1 billion bond was issued in December 2014, Bank Negara Malaysia required the State Government to establish a dedicated Sinking Fund to ensure full repayment upon maturity,' he explained. Under this safeguard, RM200 million was to be set aside annually over five years so that repayment would not become a sudden financial burden, regardless of which party held office. Records show contributions to the Sinking Fund were made according to schedule: RM2 million in 2016 (tabled in 2015), RM200 million in 2017 (tabled in 2016), RM400 million in 2018 (tabled in 2017) and RM380 million in 2019 (tabled in 2018). The remaining RM18 million came from interest earned on the fund's investments. 'The claim that Warisan had to 'find' RM600 million in a matter of months ignores reality. The payment schedule had been designed since 2014 and the necessary funds were already budgeted as part of the State's multi-year financial planning,' stressed Masidi. He pointed out that during Warisan's tenure, the only bond repayment allocation tabled was RM380 million in 2019, an obligation that would have been fulfilled by any government in office at the time. Masidi emphasised that repaying the bond on schedule was a legal and contractual obligation, not an optional act of goodwill. 'The financial discipline and structure that enabled this repayment were put in place in 2014, not in 2018. Public discussion on State finances must be anchored in documented facts, not selective figures or politically convenient narratives. 'The people of Sabah deserve nothing less,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
