Dehradun: A 25-member team — set to scale four peaks over 6,000 metres in Himachal Pradesh's Lahaul region and Leh's Ladakh area — was flagged off by the Border Security Force's (BSF) Institute of Adventure and Advanced Training (IAAT) in Dehradun's Doiwala on Saturday.
Deputy commandant at IAAT, Hemant Kothiyal, said the expedition, named "BSF Alpine Training & Mountaineering Expedition-2025," was launched by IG (Training) Ashok Kumar and will conclude on Sept 3.
"During the expedition, members will collect garbage from camps on the peaks as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission and bring it down for proper disposal. It also aims to pay tribute to mountaineers who lost their lives during a similar expedition in Leh's Nubra Valley in 1995," Kothiyal added.

Parks, green belts cry for attention, authorities yet to act

1 2 3 Panchkula: Several parks and green belts across Panchkula are in a state of neglect, with residents raising alarms over poor maintenance and growing health risks, especially during the monsoon season. Despite repeated concerns, civic authorities have yet to take action. One of the most neglected areas is the green belt in Industrial Phase II, opposite Sector 15, which is overrun with wild grass, broken benches, and heaps of dumped horticulture waste. "Apart from cleanliness, this situation invites the danger of vector-borne diseases due to the breeding of mosquitoes and other insects. Authorities need to wake up and do the needful. Small parks have sector committees, but not big green belts. They should also have it," said SK Nayar, President, Citizens Welfare Association. In Sector 19, the condition of Maharana Pratap Public Park is equally alarming. "The grass and trees are overgrown and untrimmed, making it unsafe for children and senior citizens. Dogs often defecate in the park, and with the rainy season, mosquitoes, snakes, and insects become common. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Resmed AirSense 11 with flat 20% off ResMed Buy Now Undo It's a major hygiene concern," said Priyanka Yadav, a Sector 19 resident. She added the park has become practically unusable and urged the authorities to clean and restore it urgently. Similarly, a green belt behind Gopal Sweets in Sector 20 has turned into a dump yard with stagnant water and garbage piling up at multiple points, raising the risk of infections and waterborne diseases. Residents of Sector 25 have also reported that two parks in the area are in bad shape, with damaged infrastructure and thick wild growth. They claim that repeated complaints have fallen on deaf ears. "Across Panchkula, especially after the monsoon rains, the parks are facing more damage and urgently require trimming, cleaning, and restoration," said another concerned resident. Residents of some other sectors have raised concern about parks and even wild grass growth on footpaths. While the city once prided itself on its well-maintained green spaces, the current state of affairs has left locals disappointed and frustrated. With rising health risks and diminishing public spaces, citizens are now demanding swift and sustained action from the municipal authorities. ₹45 Lakh Aquifer Project Finds No Takers, BMC Misses Monsoon Opportunity

Bhopal: The approaching end of monsoon season has left Bhopal's about ₹45 lakh Shallow Aquifer Management (SAM 2.0) project under AMRUT 2.0 at a standstill, as no takers have come forward to execute the work. Introduced in 2022 across 10 urban centres, the SAM programme aims to enhance groundwater sustainability through infrastructure development and community education. While Hyderabad and Jaipur show notable advancement, Bhopal's implementation remains dormant due to insufficient contractor participation. The initiative, approved in early 2023, aimed to establish recharge structures across 10 sites, predominantly near Hoshangabad Road, BHEL region, and Arif Nagar. These installations aim to boost underground water reserves and control urban flooding. Despite completed site assessments and official clearances, the project remains dormant during the vital aquifer recharge period. BMC officials when contacted did not comment. Experts have noted this delay has squandered a crucial chance to utilise monsoon precipitation for groundwater restoration. The situation is further complicated by water quality issues. Islamnagar and Sarvar areas have reported excessive nitrate concentrations, potentially causing health complications including blue-baby syndrome. Central Water Pollution Control Board has identified multiple locations breaching water safety parameters. PMC set to extend garbage lifting during night hours to more areas in city

1 2 Pune: Almost a month after initiating steps to clear garbage from market areas during night hours, the civic administration has expanded the initiative to more pockets of the city to improve the handling of daily waste. Currently, civic teams collect approximately 250 tonnes of waste at night. Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has deployed 1,400 staffers and more than 200 vehicles for night cleaning activities. Sandip Kadam, head of PMC's solid waste management department, said, "We started lifting garbage at night from the market areas last month. The drive has been extended to more areas as well. So far, the drive has generated positive results, and citizens can see cleaner roads in the morning." Residents have welcomed the night cleaning drive, however, they want the civic body to ensure the initiative continues. Vishal Kale, a resident of the Mandai area, said, "The presence of cleaning staff has increased, but dumping of waste in open areas continues. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo We want the administration to target these locations and impose fines on those involved in throwing waste illegally." A civic official said, "Vendors and food stall owners are not segregating waste, and the quantity of mixed garbage is significant. Steps are being planned to collect the dry and wet waste separately." Meanwhile, the administration has reported some instances of attacks by unidentified people on the staff involved in garbage cleaning during night hours. Civic officials have approached the city police to ensure security for the staff as required. The city generates around 2,500 tonnes of waste every day. Inspection of commercial establishments for waste segregation The civic body will start the inspection of shops, vendors, and commercial establishments from next week to check if they are maintaining separate dustbins to collect wet and dry waste. The teams will issue on-the-spot notices to establishments for not meeting waste collection norms.
