Broncos announce 2 hires and 9 title changes in scouting department
And just like that, the Denver Broncos' personnel department is set.
Broncos general manager George Paton lost assistant general manager Darren Mougey, V.P. of football operations Mark Thewes, college scouting director Brian Stark, national scout Rob Paton and senior personnel executive David Shaw this offseason. Through two outside hires and nine in-house promotions/title changes, Paton has now replaced those departures.
The first known addition was Cam Williams as a co-director of player personnel. He spent the last decade with the New England Patriots. The second outside hire was Jordon Dizon as director of pro personnel. Dizon is returning to Denver after three years with the Super Bowl-winning New England Patriots.
Following the announcement of the new hires and the title changes for in-house staffers, here's a look at the team's updated scouting department ahead of the 2025 NFL season. Bold signifies a new title or new hire.

'Not coming back': Selwyn Cobbo cops massive new blow after Broncos axing

Selwyn Cobbo might be hard-pressed getting back into the Broncos' first-grade team anytime soon after Josiah Karapani bagged a double and looked very strong on Saturday night. Karapani scored two of Brisbane's eight tries as the Broncos bounced back to form with a 44-14 thrashing of the Titans. Starting in place of the axed Cobbo, Karapani had 15 runs for 176 metres, as well as three tackle breaks and two line breaks. The 23-year-old, who'd only played 11 games in first grade before Saturday night, doubled his career try tally and looked every bit an NRL player. He vindicated coach Michael Maguire's decision to bring him in to replace Cobbo, after also getting the nod over regular first-grader Deine Mariner. Cobbo was spotted at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night, and helped the team run through their warmup drills. He appeared to be in good spirits, and reportedly took his demotion well. Maguire explained the decision to dump him to reserve grade on Friday, saying: "As a group, and as a leadership group and as a coach, we're pushing standards here and expectations in how we're doing things, and Karapani's got his opportunity and Selly's got to look at a few things in his game. "(Karapani) has been really consistent in the way he's been playing through the pre -season ... and he's obviously experienced first grade. When he has played, he's played really well. I know he'll do a good job." Maguire refused to divulge on the areas of Cobbo's game he wants to see improved, but said he "definitely" could force his way back into the side. "I'm here to coach the team. We're creating standards and ... the more you meet those, the more opportunities you have," Maguire said. Complicating the situation with Cobbo is the fact he's off-contract at the end of 2025. According to reports, the Broncos haven't tabled him a formal offer and have prioritised the re-signing of centre Kotoni Staggs. With Gehamat Shibasaki and Jesse Arthars proving themselves as genuine first-graders, and Grant Anderson set to join the Broncos from Melbourne in 2026, it's looking increasingly likely that Cobbo will depart. If the Broncos choose to keep Cobbo, it'll likely be a one-year extension that would allow him to chase the riches on offer at expansion teams Perth or PNG from 2027. RELATED: Fresh blow for Panthers as four-time premiership winner retires 'Shouldn't be involved': Wayne Bennett hit with ban by NRL On Saturday night, fans were quick to point out the tricky task that Cobbo faces in getting back into the team considering Karapani's performance. Unless there's an injury or Reece Walsh is called up for State of Origin duty for Queensland, Cobbo is set for a decent stint in Queensland Cup. One person wrote on social media: "When the media chimed up and slated Madge from dropping Cobbo, you just knew Karapani would salute. He did. Brilliant." Another wrote: "Karapani has got to retain his position after tonight. I like him a lot more than Cobbo on that wing." While a third added: "Cobbo aint coming back into this side anytime soon. Just the response we needed. Karapani has stood up." Karapani has got to retain his position after tonight. Can Eagles' Jalen Hurts Reach New Heights in 2025?

Can Eagles' Jalen Hurts Reach New Heights in 2025? originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts has done more in his first four years with the team than any other quarterback in club history. Advertisement Since he became a starter in 2021, the Oklahoma product is a two-time Pro Bowler, an All-Pro, has been to the Super Bowl twice, won once, and is a Super Bowl MVP. Few quarterbacks in history have that kind of record throughout their entire career - let alone their first four seasons. As Hurts is preparing for his fifth season as a starter, and sixth in the NFL, expectations around him are split. Some analysts want to see the quarterback take a natural progression as a passer in a similar way that Russell Wilson did when he was a young Super Bowl champion with Seattle. Others look past the numbers altogether. So long as Philly wins, Hurts' legacy will remain elite. When the Eagles took Hurts in the second round of the 2020 draft, they looked at him in a similar light that they did Wilson back in 2012. They weren't able to get the Wisconsin product then, and were hellbent on making sure that wouldn't happen again eight years later. Advertisement It worked out for them. Hurts has been the kind of leader and winner teams beg for in a starting quarterback. Can he reach new heights as a Super Bowl champion now? Hurts' numbers aren't bad. He has a career completion percentage of over 64%, has thrown for close to 15,000 yards, and has an 85:39 touchdown-to-interception ratio. These numbers are good. They can be a whole lot better. That's where Hurts is now. He is a proven winner with the talent around him. If he can improve as a passer and bolster his numbers, his standing as not only one of the best quarterbacks in the league, but the greatest quarterback in franchise history will be unchallenged for good. Advertisement It'll certainly help his future candidacy if he puts up numbers that push for the Hall of Fame as well. Eagles DC Delivers Confident Message After Critical Losses

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. For the Philadelphia Eagles, winning the trenches has been a primary reason behind their success in the past. That was especially true during the team's most recent run, which was capped off with a Super Bowl victory. The Eagles' offensive line won't have a ton of turnover heading into the 2025 NFL season. The same can't be said for the defensive side. Oftentimes, winning comes at a great cost. The Eagles witnessed their pass rush feast on Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl just months ago, but they also witnessed teams line up to pay some of the free agents, causing some Philadelphia stars to walk out the door. A little worry would only make the Eagles human. The team's defensive coordinator, Vic Fangio, recently fielded questions about the state of his defensive line. The Eagles prepared for the cost of success, and Fangio remains confident in his team's ability to stay strong after some key losses in free agency. "I feel good about Nolan [Smith]. "I think we'll feel good about Jalyx [Hunt] now that he's gonna get a lot of reps and develop," Fangio told reporters, according to Pro Football Talk. "He played good for us down the stretch last year, and played a lot, as you saw, so I feel good about those two guys, and I think they'll continue to improve." "We've got [Josh] Uche, we've got Azeez [Ojulari], we've got three other guys there. I think we'll be fine." Josh Sweat, a homegrown defensive lineman for the Eagles, took his talents to the Arizona Cardinals. He leaves the Eagles with 104 regular-season games under his belt. He collected 43 sacks over that time, including nearly three in this past postseason. The 2021 third-rounder, Milton Williams, is another player who cashed out this offseason. Since his rookie season, Williams has played in 67 games, with 19 starts. He collected 132 tackles (25 for a loss), 11.5 sacks, and nearly 30 hits on opposing QBs. Williams leaves the Eagles for a run with the New England Patriots. Beyond the younger players who picked up a big payday, the Eagles also lost their seasoned veteran, Brandon Graham, to retirement. Eventually, Graham's age caught up to him throughout the 2024 NFL season, but without injuries he was still quite productive. The Eagles will face a ton of tests in 2025, and how they perform up front on defense will be the biggest question heading into the new year. It's easy to assume that all will be right for Fangio's unit, but the Eagles don't see a reason to be overly concerned at this time.
