Four held for attack on hit-and-run accused on court premises, granted bail
Ahmedabad: Four men who allegedly attacked 20-year-old BBA student Rohan Soni, accused in a fatal hit-and-run near Shivranjini Crossroads, on the premises of Gheekanta court, were arrested on Tuesday night and released on bail the next day.
The attack occurred on Tuesday afternoon when police brought Soni to court for remand. According to the FIR lodged by police sub-inspector Mehulkumar Sindhav of N Division traffic police, the accused — identified as Adil Shaikh, Uzaif Ajmeri, Sahid Mirza, and Ayaman Ajmeri — emerged from a crowd of media personnel and relatives of the deceased and began assaulting Soni as soon as he stepped out of the police vehicle.

Officers rushed Soni inside to prevent further harm. In the process, the attackers allegedly assaulted police personnel and threatened to kill the accused. "Around 3.15 pm, as we arrived at the court compound where media personnel and relatives of the deceased were present, four individuals suddenly emerged from the crowd and began assaulting the accused. We intervened to protect him and were also assaulted, preventing us from performing our duty.
One of the attackers threatened us, saying, 'He killed our man, kill him too,'" the complaint stated.
The Karanj police booked the four under BNS sections 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 121(1) (voluntarily causing hurt or grievous hurt to deter a public servant from duty), 351(3) (criminal intimidation), along with other relevant provisions.
Police said the attackers were related to the two victims of the hit-and-run — Akram Qureshi (35), who died on the spot, and Ashfaq Ajmeri (22), who succumbed to injuries at Sola Civil Hospital.
Investigators allege that Soni was racing with three friends at around 1.30 am on Monday when his vehicle rammed into the two-wheeler, throwing both victims nearly 100 feet from the point of impact.
Following the court proceedings, police reported the assault to senior officers and initiated a separate case against the four accused.

A Delhi court has dismissed a plea that sought an FIR against an art gallery in the Capital for displaying two paintings by late artist and Padma awardee M F Husain, which allegedly hurt religious sentiments, during an exhibition last year. 'The court does not find any illegality in the impugned order passed by the Ld. Magistrate, wherein the Ld. Magistrate has passed a reasoned order, while observing that the paintings as well as CCTV footage have already been seized and as such, no further investigation and collection of evidence is required at this stage, as the evidence is in the possession of the complainant as well as on record,' said Additional Sessions Judge Saurabh Pratap Singh Laler of Patiala House in his order dated August 19. 'In conclusion, the Impugned Order reflects a reasoned application of mind, aligning with statutory provisions and judicial precedents. No police investigation is required at this stage, as evidence is accessible,' the ASJ added. 'She (the complainant) approached the police and nothing happened…The learned magistrate judge didn't consider the facts of the case,' Adkar had earlier argued. 'Hundreds of cases were filed against Husain. Instead of facing law, he fled the country,' he had added. In January, Judicial Magistrate First Class Sahil Monga of Patiala House Court refused to order an FIR against DAG. However, the court had earlier ordered a seizure of the 'offensive' paintings. Till date, the paintings are kept at a malkhana (police store house). Sachdeva had alleged in a post on X that she clicked photos of 'offensive paintings displayed at DAG World' on December 4, 2024, and filed a police complaint on December 9 'after researching past FIRs against M F Husain'. 'However, during a visit with the IO (investigating officer) on 10.12.2024, the paintings were removed and (it was) falsely claimed they were never displayed,' she had stated. The counsel of the art gallery had argued, 'The Magistrate didn't commit any error. If you consciously go to a place, it can be an offence. If you're placing something that is aimed at art lovers at an exhibition, it can't be an offence. There needs to be a deliberate and malicious intent. Is it the lawyer who is posting these paintings or are we promoting it? We have never put it on social media.' 'The sketches were there for 30 days during the exhibition. Thousands of people saw the painting. No one except the complainant (Sachdeva) objected. Their concerns can't be seen as the concerns of the whole community,' the counsel had said. Adkar, on the other hand, had said that a case of Section 299 (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) was made out. 'Our gods have been insulted… They have been shown holding nude women. The complainant is the eyewitness, she herself took photos,' Adkar had said. 'Husain had earlier also made nude goddesses. There were multiple complaints against him… There was not even an apology. This is not the way to deal with Sanatan Dharma,' he had argued before the court. 'Any obscene painting can be made and put in my bag. But the moment it leaves my bag, it becomes public. That's where the problem lies… I'm just saying 'spare my gods (Hindu gods)'.'

Infant kidnapped by train passenger rescued within 18 hrs, reunited with kin
New Delhi: What began as a routine train trip from Chennai to Delhi turned into a nightmare for a young mother when a fellow passenger, whom she had befriended during the journey, allegedly kidnapped her three-month-old boy. The infant was rescued within 18 hours from Rajasthan and reunited with his family. According to police, the woman, a resident of Chennai, was travelling to meet relatives in central Delhi's Anand Parbat on Aug 19 along with her baby. During the journey, she struck up a conversation with a fellow passenger, later identified as 32-year-old Jitender Kumar, a resident of Khetri in Rajasthan. Over the course of two hours, Kumar won her trust and offered to help her reach her destination. Once they arrived in Delhi, he accompanied her to Anand Parbat. There, he reportedly suggested that she buy clothes for the baby from a local shop. Handing her Rs 150, he asked her to step inside while he waited outside with the infant. The mother complied, only to come out of the shop moments later and discover that both Kumar and her baby had vanished, said police. A frantic search ensued. Woman set ablaze by man in Kannur dies
Kozhikode: A 39-year-old woman who was set ablaze at her residence in Uruvanchal near Kuttiyattoor, Kannur, succumbed to injuries on Thursday. The victim, Praveena, wife of Ajeesh of Karaprath House, had been undergoing treatment at Pariyaram Govt Medical College Hospital since Wednesday's attack. Neighbours rushed to the house on hearing the screams of the woman and took them to the hospital. Police said that both Praveena and Jijesh were schoolmates and were known to each other. "The motive behind the attack is still not clear and an investigation is under way. Local residents have said that Jijesh had attacked Praveena after she ended their acquaintance," said an officer at the Mayyil police station. Local residents said Praveena and family have been living in a rented house as the construction work was going on in her house situated nearby. Jijesh who also sustained burn injuries in the attack is under treatment at the Pariyaram MCH. Police have booked Jijesh under BNS sections 109 (1) (attempt to murder) and 332 (a) (house trespass).
