SAD-BJP unite to oppose no-confidence motion against Kharar MC president

Time of India07-05-2025
Mohali: In a dramatic development, leaders of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) closed ranks to resist a no-confidence motion filed against Jaspreet Kaur Longia , sitting president of the Kharar Municipal Council (MC).Senior leaders N K Sharma, Ranjit Gill, Parvinder Sohana, Charanjit Kalewal, and BJP's Vineet Joshi voiced strong opposition to what they described as Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) "high-handedness and misuse of power." Addressing a joint press conference, the alliance leaders alleged that AAP was pressuring councillors who support SAD using administrative machinery, including the police. "AAP is attempting to hijack the democratic process in Kharar by threatening and coercing councillors," said SAD leader Ranjit Gill. "We, the SAD-BJP alliance, are united in our stand to save the duly-elected president from being ousted under duress," they said.Former Derabassi MLA and senior SAD leader, N K Sharma, accused AAP of blatant misuse of state power. "Police officers have been sent to homes and workplaces of councillors supporting SAD. This is a clear attempt to intimidate them into switching sides," Sharma claimed. BJP's Vineet Joshi and SAD leaders Parvinder Sohana and Charanjit Kalewal also condemned AAP's alleged pressure tactics and pledged full support to president Longia. The crisis erupted when 18 councillors submitted a written request to the executive officer of the Kharar Municipal Council, seeking a special meeting to introduce a no-confidence motion against Longia. The signatories, including councillors from Congress, AAP, and a few independents, cited a lack of confidence in Longia's leadership and claimed that she no longer enjoyed majority support. The group invoked relevant provisions of the Punjab Municipal Act, urging the executive officer to convene a session to allow a formal floor test. The 27-member Kharar MC is composed of eight SAD councillors, eight independents, one AAP councillor, and 10 Congress councillors.Jaspreet Kaur Longia was previously elected as president with the support of independent councillors, despite SAD not holding a majority on its own. With shifting alliances and political tension mounting, the no-confidence motion poses a serious challenge to the SAD-led leadership in Kharar. The president will be given a chance to prove her majority in the house as per statutory procedure.MSID:: 120936432 413 |

Bengal BJP MPs to meet with Amit Shah on Monday

The Member of Parliament (MP) from the West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will meet with Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday in Delhi. According to party sources, the Home Minister will chair a meeting with all the Bengal BJP MPs to strategize on countering the allegations raised by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the Assembly. The TMC has been vocal about the alleged harassment of Bengali-speaking migrant workers and their pushback into Bangladesh. Additionally, TMC MPs have been holding protests on the Parliament premises regarding the implementation of the SIR (Special Investigation Report) in Bihar, which they oppose in West Bengal. The meeting will address these issues and discuss the counterstrategy for the BJP MPs. 'Tomorrow, we will have a meeting with the Home Minister. While it is strictly a party meeting, we will also address the RG Kar issue. The parents of the victim doctor have shared certain insights and provided us with documents that we will present. However, we cannot make any commitments as the CBI is currently investigating the matter,' stated BJP State President and MP Shamik Bhattacharya at the press conference. Bhattacharya further highlighted that another significant issue in Bengal is radicalization, especially in light of recent events in Bangladesh. There have been signs of unrest in several districts of West Bengal. Reports indicate that anti-social groups are establishing their modules, particularly in Cooch Behar, which raises concerns about the safety and security of the country. In both BJP-ruled and non-BJP-ruled states, the identity cards of migrant laborers are being scrutinized. During questioning, many have admitted to being from Bangladesh and have mentioned three locations in Bengal—Barasat, Madhyamgram, and Siliguri—where they obtained fake identity documents. Bhattacharya claimed that the livelihoods of migrant laborers from Bengal, who have gone to other states leaving their families behind, are being threatened by Bangladeshi infiltrators and Rohingyas. 'Even in Kolkata, there is a colony in Kasba known as Gulshan Colony. How did this colony come up suddenly? What about those living behind the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate? Can they provide any identification? The ruling government is pushing this state and its people toward danger. Our stance is very clear: only citizens of Bharat should reside here. Just as fake voters have been identified in Bihar, fake voters will also be identified here.' Meanwhile, according to sources within the TMC , Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will hold a meeting with Trinamool MPs on Monday. She is scheduled to conduct a virtual meeting at 4:30 PM, during which she will convey to the MPs what they should say in Parliament and what issues they should raise.

DMK-led alliance has lost public support, says Nainar Nagendran

The ruling DMK-led alliance in Tamil Nadu has lost its connect with the public and is functioning with internal contradictions, said Nainar Nagendran, State president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), in Bhavani. Mr. Nagendran told journalists that law and order situation in the State had broken down and murders were reported frequently across districts. This was because of the growing prevalence of narcotics, including cannabis, that had spread to rural areas too, he alleged. Mr. Nagendran said property tax and electricity tariffs had seen significant rise. The DMK, before coming to power, had promised ₹1,000 per month for all women. 'They did not fulfil it earlier. But with elections approaching, they will give it now,' he claimed. Welfare programme events had become platforms for visible discord among the ruling party MPs and MLAs. 'There is no unity — not only within the DMK but also within its alliance. The government is functioning inconsistently and is focused solely on retaining power,' he said. Teacher vacancies remained unfilled despite the promises made in the DMK's election manifesto and temporary posts were not regularised. On seat-sharing with the AIADMK, he said the BJP's primary objective was to unseat the DMK government, and the number of seats would be announced ahead of the elections. Regarding former AIADMK coordinator O. Panneerselvam's allegation that he failed to respond to calls and letters seeking support to meet the Prime Minister, Mr. Nagendran said he was unaware of any such communication and had not received any letter.
