Even Marvel haters will be won over by new movie starring Florence Pugh who could save the ailing franchise
Thunderbolts* (12A, 126 mins)
Verdict: Pull up a Pugh
Rating:
FOUR STARS
For an actress not yet 30, Florence Pugh has a thrillingly varied set of credits. An abused Victorian wife (Lady Macbeth, 2016), a wrestler (Fighting With My Family, 2019), a nuclear physicist's psychiatrist lover (Oppenheimer, 2023) and a princess 20,000 years into the future, in last year's Dune: Part Two, are just a handful of her glittering performances.
She was wonderful, too, as Amy, the bolshiest of the March sisters, in 2019's delightful Little Women.
But it's as a super-charged Russian-born assassin that she might yet have her biggest impact, because if there's a single character that can drag the faltering Marvel Cinematic Universe out of its creative and commercial slump, it is Pugh's Yelena Belova.
That's a mighty challenge, but she's the propulsive force that could just make a hit of Thunderbolts*.
Pugh made her MCU debut four years ago in Black Widow, with Yelena serving as a kind of comic foil to Scarlett Johansson's more po-faced Natasha Romanoff, her older sister.
But in Thunderbolts* she takes centre stage and quickly establishes herself as one of Marvel's more compelling characters: a young, world-weary hitwoman who hates herself for spending hours scrolling through her phone.
Now, the prospect of yet another superhero blockbuster might not flood your heart and mind with joy. You might well roll your eyes — both at those who continue to churn out these movies, and those still in thrall to them.
If so, then spare a thought for me, because I have to see all of them. I feel (and more often than not share) your cynicism.
But Thunderbolts* and even its whimsical asterisk soon won me over, mostly because of Pugh.
Her double-act with David Harbour as her semi-estranged, proxy father Alexei Shostakov is a genuine hoot.
Formerly known as Red Guardian, the hairy Russian super-soldier with a mouthful of gold teeth, he is now wistfully retired and running a limousine company.
On seeing the depressive Yelena for the first time in a year, Shostakov grunts: 'The light inside you is dim... even by Eastern European standards.' I chuckled aloud.
Yelena's state of mind isn't just played for laughs, however. Memories of childhood trauma and mental health frailties have a significant role in this tale, which in lesser hands might have seemed glib, distasteful even.
Fortunately, director Jake Shreier and writers Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo, along with the cast, are firmly up to the task.
As for the story itself, its chief villain is the exotically-named CIA director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (the ever excellent Julia Louis-Dreyfus, playing a ramped-up version of conniving Selina Meyer in the TV satire Veep), whose eager assistant Mel (Geraldine Viswanathan) becomes increasingly concerned about her boss's evil chicanery.
Facing an impeachment trial and determined to get rid of anyone who might testify against her, Valentina lays a trap for the motley crew she used to send out to do her dirty work, who also include the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), would-be Captain America John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko) and Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen).
Her fiendish plan is to set this bunch of cut-price Avengers, the self-styled Thunderbolts, against each other. But instead they join forces, which would probably be enough to out-muscle her except that she has an extra card up her sleeve which I shouldn't disclose here, except to reveal that it has something to do with Bob (Lewis Pullman), the diffident victim of a genetic-engineering experiment.
Needless to add, this is all super-silly. But it is done with terrific brio, leading to the all but inevitable showdown in Manhattan in which innocent mortals and even tall buildings are reduced to inert shadows.
Trying to squeeze comedy out of the superhero genre, as in the Guardians Of The Galaxy and Deadpool films, can sometimes seem just as strained as loading them with solemn, weighty themes that we're expected to take seriously.

Cheers – of a kind – when Susan Calman went to the Glasgow pub
The bromance between the President of the United States and the Richest Man on the Planet has combusted in spectacular fashion, with both combatants firing missiles of reinforced spleen at each other across the No Man's Land of social media. Donald disses, Elon hisses. And the Diary grieves to see the former chums become so churlish, for we were secretly hoping that they would be a solid double act for life, like The Krankies… or Gary Lineker and his ego. On the other hand, it can't be denied that the spectacle of two (allegedly) mature men scrapping as though they're in the final act of the latest blockbuster from the Marvel Cinematic Universe has its entertainment value. As every student of classical theatre knows, drama is conflict. And talking of all things theatrical, here's a few of the Diary's favourite tales from our archives… Everyone's a critic Glasgow lawyer turned comedian Susan Calman once admitted she appreciates the honesty of the citizens of her home town. After appearing on TV show Have I Got News for You, she went into her South Side local – 'no food, no music, no fun, but the barmaid goes to the bookie's for you' – where she was beckoned over by two wizened old regulars who told her they'd seen her on the telly, and added: 'You weren't as awful as we thought you'd be.' Ashes to ashes The Edinburgh Fringe fast approaches, meaning plenty of ropey shows and dopey performers clogging up the streets of Scotland's Capital in the hope of future fame and fortune. We recall when Braindead Theatre Company first appeared at the Festival with a show called Cigarettes and Chocolate. On arrival in Edinburgh they excitedly unpacked and headed for the Royal Mile to publicise the show, with one actor in a seven-foot foam cigarette costume. Within minutes a member of the public had put a lighter to the giant ciggy with the chap inside it. Working world woes The day after an office party one chap said to his pal that he unfortunately told his boss that he reminded him of Santa. 'That doesn't sound too bad,' said his mate. 'What I actually said,' replied the pal, ' was that he was fat and only worked one day of the year.' Musing about boozing A group of young women were dithering over their drinks selection in a Glasgow bar when the chap behind them said to his pal: 'How can they not know what they want to drink? I've known since I got to work this morning what I wanted to drink eight hours later.' Facing the music A performer in Glasgow once asked his audience: 'How do you get a guitar player to stop playing?' He answered himself: 'Put sheet music in front of him.'

Scots OnlyFans teacher who sold x-rated pics slams 'Victorian values' of education bosses
Kirsty Buchan faces being struck off following an educational watchdog hearing next week. A teacher who was sacked for selling X-rated photos online has blasted education bosses for their 'Victorian values'. The General Teaching Council (GTCS) for Scotland has scheduled a hearing that may ban Kirsty Buchan from the classroom. But the physics teacher has told the education bosses she is too busy to attend – as she is doing a photo-shoot for her OnlyFans site. She said: 'The way I've been treated in the school and the education system has been very one-sided and unfair. 'They have applied Victorian values to behaviour that is socially acceptable in 2025 and written it up as though I am suffering from poor morality. The Daily Record interviewed Kirsty in 2022 after it emerged she was running the saucy sideline and made £60,000 in a month. Pupils at Bannerman High in Baillieston, Glasgow, got wind of the full-frontal content and some parents were furious. But despite accepting a no-show at her GTCS hearing will probably mean being struck off, Kirsty is unrepentant. She said: 'The reality is that I live my life according to proper values. I'm loyal and decent and I treat people properly. And I know I was a very good teacher because I really cared about the kids I taught. 'I'd have loved to have carried on with both but that was taken away from me. They can do what they like at the GTCS but I won't be there.' Kirsty, of Coatbridge, said she was forced to step away from the modelling site after various setbacks, including the loss of a close family member. She added: 'I put a few things to the side to concentrate on being a mum and dealing with family things. But I am now up and running and I have hundreds of fans who are signed to my account and I am back on the modelling beat. I have been doing a range of new photos and videos and I'm looking forward to building up my portfolio.' Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! It was revealed earlier this week the ex-teacher – who uses the handle Jessica Jackrabbitx on the site – faces a hearing with the GTCS on Monday, where she is charged with three offences. Kirsty, 34, is accused of bringing the profession into disrepute by selling the photos. The GTCS says she failed to ensure they could not be accessed by under-18s without the need to log in to the X-rated subscription service. She is also being carpeted for speaking to the Record, which caused a huge stir at the time, with pupils coming forward to say such modelling should be acceptable in 2025. In the interview, Kirsty told how her wages were docked by the school for time off she took off to look after her son. In her first month – after the Record story – she made £60,000, which is more than a year's wages as a physics teacher. Her employer, Glasgow City Council, referred her case to the GTCS. Kirsty said: 'I've already lost my job but they are determined to drag me through this hearing to ensure I can never teach again. It really just makes me feel sad, to give me a life ban and make out that I'm a bad teacher when opposite is true. 'It's just a lot of backward thinking, Victorian attitude rubbish and it says more about the GTCS and Glasgow City Council than it does about me.' Kirsty added: 'I loved the job and I loved the pupils, many of whom I'm still in touch with. I have also still been able to help a few younger kids out with their maths homework, just as a favour, and that gives me a buzz.' Kirsty believes the GTCS case is vindictive. She said: 'People just need to get over it. What I do is not hurting anyone.' The GTCS claims her actions were 'lacking in integrity', failed to take steps to stop her being identified and risked bringing the profession into disrepute. It is said she is unfit to teach. The GTCS hearing will be online, last up to three days and evidence will be led by lawyers even if Kirsty does not turn up. A panel could issue a reprimand and/or apply conditions to her work. The ultimate sanction would be the removal of her name from the teaching register.

Neil Patrick Harris is Deadpool in new Marvel VR game
Wade Wilson has a new voice (Marvel/Meta) Marvel has announced a new VR game centred around Deadpool, from the studio behind 'Splosion Man and Comic Jumper. There are a huge number of Marvel games in development at the moment, including Marvel 1943: Rise Of Hydra and a new fighting game from Arc System Works, but now another has been added to the pile at Summer Game Fest. Surprisingly, it's a VR game starring quippy anti-hero Deadpool, created by Twisted Pixel ('Splosion Man) and Oculus Studios in collaboration with Marvel Games. Even more surprisingly, Deadpool has a brand new voice, in Neil Patrick Harris, best known for starring in How I Met Your Mother, Netflix's A Series Of Unfortunate Events, and Doogie Howser, M.D. Marvel's Deadpool VR features a new original story, where the superhero is pulled into a portal to Mojoworld. After he signs a dodgy contract without reading the fine print, he's sent off to visit a bunch of locations from across the Marvel universe, facing villains both iconic and, as noted by the developers, 'not-so-iconic'. The gameplay blends parkour and combat, with a style described as 'if you can imagine it, you can probably do it'. Based on the trailer, you can shoot, throw your gun, wield enemies in a grappling beam, shove people against propellers, and skewer heads with your swords. As you'd expect from Deadpool, it's all appropriately meta, with one nod levelled at a certain web-slinger on PlayStation: 'Spider-Man gets Insomniac, and I get this sh*t?' If you're a fan of Deadpool, this seems to be hitting all the right notes and Harris seems like a perfect fit for the character. We'll have to see though, if it can match the heights of fellow superhero VR title, Batman: Arkham Shadow. While Twisted Pixel were originally known for games like 'Splosion Man and Comic Jumper on the Xbox 360, in recent years the studio has created VR titles. The combat in Deadpool appears to be an evolution of their last action game, 2019's Path Of The Warrior. Marvel's Deadpool VR is slated to release late 2025 and is exclusive to Meta Quest 3 and 3S. If you fancy more Marvel games, Insomniac is working on a Wolverine project, an Iron Man game is in development at EA, and a throwback beat 'em up titled Marvel Cosmic Invasion is set to launch this year.
