Jaya Bachchan
and
Amitabh Bachchan
's wedding is one of Bollywood's most famous love stories. But it wasn't all smooth sailing. Before they tied the knot on 3 June 1973, Jaya's father was strongly against the marriage.
In fact, he told Big B's father that his family was 'ruined' because of it. Here's how their journey to marriage unfolded despite family opposition.
A harsh reaction to the wedding
Harivansh Rai Bachchan, Amitabh's father and a famous poet, shared a shocking moment from the wedding day in his autobiography In the Afternoon of Time. As quoted by News 18, he said, 'Before we left, I embraced the father of my new daughter-in-law and congratulated him on getting a son-in-law like Amit, expecting him to say the same in respect of Jaya.
But he said, 'My family is utterly ruined.''
Strict rules before marriage
Even before the wedding, there were clear limits set by Amitabh's father. Earlier Jaya spoke about this on the podcast What The Hell Navya. She said, 'He called me and said, 'My parents are saying you can't go for a holiday with Jaya. If you want to go for a holiday with her, you marry her.' We were planning to get married in October, but we preponed it to June.'
Amitabh's support for Jaya's work
Despite the old-fashioned rules, Amitabh encouraged Jaya to continue her acting career.

She said, 'I definitely don't want a wife who will be 9-5. Please work. You must work but not every day.' He wanted Jaya to follow her passion but also balance her work and personal life.
Jaya's father's dreams for her
Jaya also further revealed why her father was so against the marriage. He believed that marriage should not be the only goal for his daughters. She quoted him saying, 'I have not brought you into this world to just educate yourself, get married and settle down and have children.
I want you all to do something in life.'
A marriage that stood the test of time
More than 52 years later, Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan remain one of Bollywood's strongest couples. They have two children, Shweta and
Abhishek Bachchan
, and their marriage is admired for its love and resilience. Today, they are also doting grandparents to Shweta's children,
Agastya Nanda
and Navya Nanda, and Abhishek's daughter,

This Sholay Actress, Married At 12, Was Bollywood's Beloved ‘Mausi'

Audiences still recall Leela Mishra as 'Mausi' in the 1975 classic Sholay, but talent was recognised in 1981 when she played Naani Maa. Leela Mishra was one of the most respected actresses in Indian cinema, known for her natural screen presence and powerful performances. She has worked for over 50 years and has appeared in more than 200 films. Audiences still recall her as 'Mausi' from the 1975 classic Sholay. Her talent was recognised in 1981 when she played Naani Maa, for which she earned the Best Actress award at the age of 73. The former actress got married at the age of 12 and became a mother at 17. Even after suffering a paralysis attack on set once, she chose to work. Let's look closer at her inspiring journey. Leela Mishra's Early Life Her entry into films happened unexpectedly. She was discovered by Mama Shinde, who worked with Dadasaheb Phalke's Nasik Cinetone. He convinced her husband, Ram Prasad Mishra, to let her act in movies. During that time, there was a major shortage of women actors in the industry, due to which she remained in demand and often much higher salary than male actors. Why She Chose Character Roles Over Lead Roles From her early years in cinema, Leela Mishra often played roles far older than her actual age. Actor Tabassum once shared a special memory about the late actress on her YouTube channel. She recalled interviewing the veteran actress in the 1970s, where Mishra openly spoke about why she never chose to be a leading lady. Mishra explained that the values she grew up with made it hard for her to play romantic roles on screen. She wasn't comfortable with confessing or showing love to a stranger in front of the camera. Because of this, she decided to do character roles. Despite her unique choice, it made her an unforgettable actress. Audiences love her for her strong screen presence as a mother, aunt or grandmother, which became her identity. Dedication Even After Personal Tragedy While working on Daata, alongside Mithun Chakraborty, Prem Chopra and Padmini Kolhapure, Leela Mishra faced a heartbreaking moment. During the shoot, she suffered a stroke, which left the entire crew and director shocked. She was immediately taken to Mumbai for treatment, but even in that difficult time, her main concern was not her health; it was her role. Sadly, she passed away soon after, leaving her last film incomplete. First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive.
