Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that the fresh socio-educational and economic survey had been taken up as there were objections from both the upper and downtrodden communities to the earlier survey.
Speaking to press persons in Davangere on June 16, Mr. Siddaramaiah said, 'Moreover, as per Section 11(1) of the Backward Classes Commission Act, after expiry of 10 years of the report, a re-survey should be conducted. That is why re-survey had been ordered.'
The Chief Minister clarified that the general census being planned by Union Government is different from the socio-educational, economic census being conducted by the government of Karnataka. To provide social justice, knowing the socio-economic situation of the communities was necessary, and that's why the census was being conducted, he said.
He further clarified that the State Government had no qualms about the census of the Union Government. 'It is different from our socio-economic census. Moreover, the Centre has not said anything on conducting a socio-economic census. We are conducting a caste census along with the socio-economic census,' he said.

Water Metro Coming To Patna? Sonowal Floats Ganga Mobility Plan Ahead Of Bihar Polls

Last Updated: Patna set to join Kochi in launching modern water metro services as part of Ganga transport revival. Water metro services will soon begin in Patna, Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced on Monday, stating that the city will become a hub of the inland water transport system on the Ganga. The announcement was made with a few months left for the state's assembly elections. Addressing a consultation meeting here on the development of inland water transport in UP, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal, Sonowal said the Modi government was committed to harnessing the full potential of river systems for cargo, tourism and local livelihoods. 'The water metro system will connect both banks of the river and offer a clean, efficient, and modern urban mobility solution for Patna. The National Inland Navigation Institute is being upgraded as a centre of excellence with fresh investment," he said. 'Over the last 11 years, the visionary leadership of PM Narendra Modi has made India's inland waterways vibrant engines of green growth and connectivity. The National Waterway 1, spanning UP, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal, stands at the heart of this revival. We are committed to harnessing the full potential of our river systems for cargo, tourism and local livelihoods. Bihar, blessed by the sacred Ganga, is poised to emerge as a key inland waterways transport hub," he added. The Centre is working hand-in-hand with all states on NW 1 to make inland water transport a pillar of India's sustainable, multimodal future, Sonowal said, maintaining that rivers are now the lifelines of the country's economy. 'As part of the National Waterway 1, stretching 1,390 km from Varanasi to Haldia, Bihar will see the development of two terminals in Patna, along with the establishment of a vessel repair and manufacturing centre along the Ganga," he said. 'Sixteen community jetties will be constructed across various districts, and Kalu Ghat will be developed into a state-of-the-art waterway centre. A dedicated task force will be formed to explore further possibilities for inland navigation and water-based commerce in 12 districts along the Ganga river in the state," he said. Sonowal said the development of NW 1 will create jobs, boost tourism, and make Bihar a key player in India's economic growth. The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) is at present conducting 10,000 km of longitudinal surveys per month to assess Least Available Depth (LAD), with coverage set to expand from 11 states in 2024 to 22 states and four Union Territories by 2027, he said. The meeting was attended by Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh, Bihar's Deputy CMs Samrat Chaudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha, UP's Transport Minister Dayashankar Singh, West Bengal's Waterways and Irrigation Minister Manas Ranjan Bhunia, and IWAI Chairman Vijay Kumar. TMC leader Abhishek criticises Centre for 'lack' of accountability over Pahalgam attack, raises questions about India's global diplomacy

New Delhi: TMC MP and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee on Monday accused the Centre of lacking accountability over the Pahalgam terror attack and raised five questions, including those on border security and alleged intelligence failure. In a long post on X, Banerjee claimed, 'It has been over 55 days since the Pahalgam terror attack. It is deeply concerning that in a democracy, neither the mainstream media, members of the opposition, nor the judiciary has stepped forward to raise these five critical questions before the Government of India.' The TMC leader first questioned how four heavily armed terrorists managed to infiltrate the Indian borders and carry out an attack that left 26 civilians dead. Calling it a 'massive breach in national security', Banerjee asked who would take responsibility for the 'failure'. He also targeted the Intelligence Bureau, questioning why its chief was granted a one-year extension just a month after the attack. Banerjee also raised questions about India's global diplomacy, pointing out that while New Delhi reached out to 33 countries after the attack, financial aid flowed instead to Pakistan—from institutions like the IMF and World Bank. 'How does a country accused of supporting terror walk away with billions in aid and a UN committee leadership post?' he wrote. Interestingly, Banerjee was himself part of a cross-party delegation sent abroad to bolster India's anti-terror message. In Japan, he condemned Pakistan as the 'vile handler of terrorism' and called for global unity to isolate it diplomatically. Banerjee's sharp intervention, coming from within a delegation meant to project India's resilience, adds a new dimension to the political fallout from the Pahalgam incident. His message is clear: patriotism must not be used to mask unanswered questions, and accountability must begin at the top.
