Cold shooting ends UNC WBB's season in Sweet 16 against archrival Duke
Cold shooting ends UNC WBB's season in Sweet 16 against archrival Duke Watching your season end against an archrival hurts.
If basketball games were decided based on the first quarter alone, the UNC women's basketball team would be leaving Friday's Sweet 16 game against archrival Duke extremely happy.
North Carolina started the game on an 11-0 run, facing little resistance from a typically strong Blue Devils defense. The Tar Heels locked in defensively, forcing a 0-for-9 start from Duke.
Alas, UNC couldn't replicate its first-quarter success in its most forgettable outcome on the year. North Carolina watched its historic season come to an end during a 47-38, defensive-minded shooting struggle against the Blue Devils.
Everything went south for the Tar Heels (29-8, 13-5 ACC) early in the second quarter, when starting center Maria Gakdeng left the under two minutes in, with what appeared to be a right leg injury. Duke (29-7, 14-4 ACC), took full advantage of North Carolina's loss, charging ahead and leading by eight at halftime.
UNC didn't make its first field goal in the second quarter until the 2:41 mark, when Indya Nivar converted a layup, closing her team's gap to 21-15.
The Tar Heels shot an ice-cold 28.3 percent from the field, making just 15 of their 53 shot attempts. North Carolina was even worse from 3-point land, sinking 3-of-11 attempts (27.3%), while a 5-for-10 mark from the free throw line didn't help, either.
Alyssa Ustby nearly picked up another double-double for UNC, scoring nine points and grabbing 10 rebounds, but no Tar Heel scored more than Ustby.
North Carolina hurt its comeback chances with turnovers, committing 15 on the afternoon. The Blue Devils also took advantage of this, deciding the game with 14 points off turnovers.
After its first Sweet 16 trip in three seasons, UNC is heading back to Chapel Hill with a disappointing loss. The Tar Heels will be a much younger team in 2025-2026, but luckily, they have the talent to replace impending departures.

MSU target, 4-star RB Damon Ferguson commits to Pitt
MSU target, 4-star RB Damon Ferguson commits to Pitt Michigan State football is still in search for a running back prospect in the 2026 class, with another top target now off the board. Four-star running back Damon Ferguson announced his commitment to Pitt on Monday morning. Ferguson posted on his social media X account to announce his commitment to the Panthers, which comes after taking an official visit there this past weekend. Ferguson is a four-star running back prospect with a recruiting rating of 89.33 in 247Sports' composite system. He ranks as the No. 26 running back and No. 381 overall prospect in 247Sports' composite rankings for the 2026 class. Michigan State is one of a few schools that were prioritizing Ferguson's recruitment before his commitment to the Pitt Panthers. He was set to take an official visit to Michigan State next week, and Indiana, Minnesota and Virginia were also heavily involved in his recruitment with official visits either planned or already occurring. Michigan State has now struck out on a pair of four star running back prospects in Ferguson and Kory Amachree of nearby Haslett, Mich. The Spartans will need to look elsewhere as their running backs board is starting to look thin in the 2026 class. WATCH: Former Ohio State player throws out first pitch at Detroit Tigers game
WATCH: Former Ohio State player throws out first pitch at Detroit Tigers game Now that the NFL draft is over and the first-timers that were selected have gone through rookie minicamp, the entire rosters of NFL teams can get on with the status quo of starting to get other camping opportunities underway, all leading up to fall camp and the start of the season. Former Ohio State defensive tackle Tyleik Williams was one of the 14 Ohio State football players taken in this year's draft, and he landed in an uncomfortable spot if you will, up in Michigan with the Detroit Lions when they selected him with the No. 28 pick in the first round. He isn't the first -- nor will he be the last -- former Buckeye to play his professional ball at TSUN (Chris Spielman anyone), but he'll have to make a good impression or perhaps face the wrath of those who loved to root against him in college. One way to do that is to make the rounds in the community, and Williams was doing just that over this past weekend by not only attending a Detroit Tigers baseball game but by throwing out the first pitch. It wasn't a seed thrown to the plate, but rather a smooth and soft delivery that at least won't get any viral moments, though it was a bit high. If you haven't seen Williams' first pitch against the Cubs on Sunday, get a look here thanks to the Detroit Tigers' "X" (formerly Twitter) account. There are several former Buckeyes getting comfortable in their new environments and cities in the NFL, and as more of these moments are made available, we'll continue to bring them to you. Florida football gets commitment from coveted OT Chancellor Campbell in 2026 cycle
Florida football gets commitment from coveted OT Chancellor Campbell in 2026 cycle Florida football added coveted in-state offensive tackle Chancellor Campbell to its 2026 recruiting class in the first of two signings on Sunday. The towering 6-foot-8-inch, 295-pound trench warrior out of St. Petersburg (Florida) Lakewood chose the Gators out of 18 total offers, including the Ohio State Buckeyes, Georgia Bulldogs, Colorado Buffaloes and Duke Blue Devils. Despite the other suitors, the Orange and Blue have been on top of Campbell's recruitment since the get-go. "Florida, they've always been talking to me, been on track, always messaging," he told Swamp247. "I call them, FaceTime them pretty much almost every day, they've always talked." Offensive line coaches Rob Sale and John Decoster also played a significant role in his decision to commit to Florida, as they spearheaded the efforts to get the massive lineman into the fold. "They really talked to me from the start, and I got to grow a good relationship with the coaches that lasted me this long to be able to commit," Campbell said. The program also got an assist from a recent commit — offensive lineman G'Nivre Carr out of nearby IMG Academy, who gave his word to Florida on June 1 and encouraged Campbell to join him in Gainesville. "He called me on Thursday, he was like, 'What do we have to do to get you to become a Gator?'" he said. Of course, everything in the program ultimately comes down to the head coach, which is why one particular experience following a staff dinner inside the O'Connell Center stood out. Billy Napier took it upon himself to drive the young prospect back to his hotel afterward in a gesture that really caught his attention. "If the head coach is driving you everywhere and talking to you, that must mean they want you bad," Campbell noted. "I wanted to come here from the start, but I just had to get some confirmation." And the rest, as they say, is history. At least, until it comes time to sign on the dotted line. Recruiting Summary Campbell is ranked No. 594 overall and No. 50 at his position nationally according to the 247Sports composite while the On3 industry ranking has him at Nos. 435 and 33, respectively.
