Swachh Survekshan 2024-25: Nagpur ranked 27th among million-plus cities

Time of India17-07-2025
NAGPUR: The Swachh Survekshan 2024-2025 results, announced by President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday, placed Nagpur at the 27th position among 40 citiesin the million-plus population category, indicating a concerning stagnation in the city's cleanliness performance and sanitation standards.
While Indore, Surat, Navi Mumbai, and Vijayawada secured top ranks under the Swachh Survekshan League (SSL) for consistent performance throughout the year, Nagpur scored a total of 9,328 points, trailing behind several cities both nationally and within Maharashtra.
Cities like Ahmedabad (ranked 1),Bhopal (2), and Raipur (4) outperformed Nagpur, as did Pimpri Chinchwad (7), Pune (8), Thane (15), Nashik (22), and Kalyan Dombivli (24) from within the state.
Despite ongoing efforts by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) to improve solid waste management, the city once again failed to secure even asingle star in the Garbage Free City (GFC) rating.
This reflects serious gaps in scientific waste processing, management of legacy waste, and public engagementin source segregation. Nagpur has retained its Water+ certification under the Open DefecationFree (ODF) category, largely due to initiatives involving the reuse of treated sewage and adequate coverage of public toilets. However, the city's applicationfor an upgraded Water++ certification was rejected, indicating that it failed to meet the higher benchmarks required for the advanced status.

Dasara: Elephants and staff insured for ₹2 crore

The elephants for Mysuru Dasara-2025, their mahouts, and kavadis have been insured for a sum of ₹2 crore. The Forest Department officials and the staff, who are associated with the management and training of elephants, are also covered under the insurance, in addition to all 14 elephants that are going to be part of the Dasara festivities, which will commence in September. In total, 43 have been given the insurance cover. Confirming this to The Hindu, Deputy Conservator of Forest (Wildlife) Prabhu Gowda said, 'A premium of ₹67,000 has been paid towards the insurance cover, which has been given by The New India Assurance Company Limited. The insurance policy provides coverage for damages to public as well as private properties.' Mr. Gowda said all nine elephants led by Abhimanyu arrived in the city on Monday around 6 p.m., and are camping at the Aranya Bhavan here. Earlier in the day, the Gajapayana of the elephants was held at Veeranahosahalli, and the jumbos were transported in trucks to Mysuru after a grand event.

BSF flags off high-altitude alpine training expedition to Lahaul and Ladakh

Dehradun: A 25-member team — set to scale four peaks over 6,000 metres in Himachal Pradesh's Lahaul region and Leh's Ladakh area — was flagged off by the Border Security Force's (BSF) Institute of Adventure and Advanced Training (IAAT) in Dehradun's Doiwala on Saturday. Deputy commandant at IAAT, Hemant Kothiyal, said the expedition, named "BSF Alpine Training & Mountaineering Expedition-2025," was launched by IG (Training) Ashok Kumar and will conclude on Sept 3. "During the expedition, members will collect garbage from camps on the peaks as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission and bring it down for proper disposal. It also aims to pay tribute to mountaineers who lost their lives during a similar expedition in Leh's Nubra Valley in 1995," Kothiyal added. Students of Madurai Corporation schools get third place in T.N. achievement survey

Students from Madurai Corporation schools have secured third place in the State-Level Achievement Survey - 2025. With the objective of encouraging children to prepare themselves on understanding skills and comprehensive reading apart from the curricula, the education department officials introduced a series of programmes which would be lively and also help the children to be creative. Recently, the authorities had conducted the survey on students from Classes 3 to 5 and 8 respectively. Though the aptitude level of the students from eighth standard in Madurai Corporation schools stood a little less, the overall reports from other classes were on top in many spheres. Hence, Mayor Indrani Pon Vasanth, Commissioner Chitra Vijayan and the education department officials proposed to strengthen the abilities of the students. Based on the results, the officials had introduced a baseline survey which helps identify the students' aptitude and interests. Be it on current affairs or on general knowledge, science or literature, the dissemination should be in a simple language and understandable to the students. To coach the students, the officials have chosen 10 schools, including middle and high schools, where students from Classes 6 to 8 would benefit in the first phase. In a bid to give an impetus to the programme, the senior officials from Deputy Commissioner to the City Health Officer would visit the 10 campuses on a daily basis and monitor the progress. The overall objective was to prepare the students not just with grades and marks, but to instil in them confidence that they could face challenges as they grew, the officials said.
