ASEAN economic officials discuss AEC Blueprint 2025 outcome
Apart from discussing the current state of Timor-Leste's accession to ASEAN today, the senior economic officials also deliberated on the AEC Strategic Plan 2026-2030 under the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, which is set to be launched and adopted by the ASEAN leaders on Monday.
The meeting also discussed regional economic performance and the effects of recent shifts in global economic policies by major economies, as well as strategies to address the impact of these shifts on ASEAN.
Additionally, discussions focused on opportunities to leverage growth ahead of the 25th AECC Meeting, scheduled to be held tomorrow.
The AECC Meeting is anticipated to endorse several report and outcome documents for adoption at the 46th ASEAN Summit. It will also provide guidance and details on the current situation faced by the Economic Pillar.
Today's meeting discussed the current regional economic performance and the implications of recent shifts in global economic policies by major economies. Deliberations focused on ASEAN's strategic responses to mitigate the impact of these shifts while identifying opportunities to leverage economic growth.
Chaired by Malaysia's Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry Deputy Secretary-General (Trade) Mastura Ahmad Mustafa, the meeting was attended by ASEAN Deputy Secretary-General for the ASEAN Economic Community Satvinder Singh and Brunei's Finance and economy Ministry Permanent Secretary (Economy, Trade and Industry) Dr May Fa'ezah Ahmad Ariffin.
Other representatives who attended the meeting physically included Long Kemvichet (Cambodia), Nugraheni Prasetya Hastuti (Indonesia), Seng Alune Vilaysack (Laos), Marie Sherylyn D. Aquia (Philippines) Alpana Roy (Singapore), Chotima Lemsawasdikul (Thailand), Nguyen Viet Chi (Vietnam) and Augusto Junior Trindade (Timor-Leste).
The representative from Myanmar, Dr Marlar Myo Nyunt, attended the session virtually.
The 46th ASEAN Summit will be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on May 26 and 27, and two key high-level meetings will be held concurrently, namely the 2nd ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit and inaugural ASEAN-GCC-China Summit.
The Summit will bring together leaders from ASEAN member states to discuss regional issues and chart the future direction of ASEAN cooperation.
'Inclusivity and Sustainability' is the theme for Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship 2025.

BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 ( Bernama) — Malaysia views ASEAN as a region with vast untapped potential -- poised to become a dynamic engine of growth and resilience amid global uncertainties, according to the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI). Under the ASEAN chairmanship, Mastura said Malaysia is working to deepen regional integration, strengthen supply chain resilience, foster sustainable and responsible investment and advance digital innovation. 'More importantly, we are committed to creating opportunities for businesses of all sizes, especially micro, small and medium enterprises to participate meaningfully in ASEAN's growth story,' she added. In a separate statement, MITI said key discussions at SEOM 3/56 focused on Malaysia's Priority Economic Deliverables under its 2025 ASEAN chairmanship; updates on the 2025 Annual Priorities under the AEM/SEOM purview; implementation of ASEAN agreements; advancement of the Digital Economy Framework Agreemen; and ASEAN's sustainability agenda, including carbon neutrality, circular economy, and the ASEAN Power Grid. MITI is hosting the SEOM 3/56 and Related Meetings from Aug 18 to 23 in Kuala Lumpur. The ministry said that discussions with ASEAN Dialogue Partners focused on reviewing progress and addressing key issues related to the implementation of existing Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), as well as the status of work plans and ongoing economic cooperation initiatives.

Anti-bullying Act proposal to be presented to Cabinet soon, says Azalina
KUALA LUMPUR: The proposal to draft an Anti-Bullying Act is expected to be tabled at a Cabinet meeting soon, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said. She said discussions at the policy level are crucial, as each relevant ministry, such as the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry (KPWKM), Education Ministry (MoE), Higher Education Ministry (MoHE), and National Unity Ministry may have their views regarding the enforcement aspects of the law. "After each ministry submits its feedback, the Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU) will conduct a detailed study and engagement sessions before the matter is brought to the policy level and subsequently to Parliament,' she said. She was speaking at the Asean Law Forum 2025 themed 'Empowering Access to Justice in the Asean Economic Community: Bridging Legal Cooperation for Inclusive Growth in the Digital Era' at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on Wednesday (Aug 20). Azalina said the main issue currently is the absence of a specific definition of bullying or penalties for such offences under existing legal provisions. She said bullying-related cases are currently dealt with under various laws including the Online Safety Act, the Anti-Sexual Harassment Act, labour laws as well as several provisions under the Penal Code. As such, BHEUU will soon issue a list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) to clarify the differences between the Penal Code and the Child Act, to avoid confusion among the public. "Many misunderstand… children can still be charged under criminal law. However, the procedure is different. For example, they cannot be tried in an open court. "I want to give assurance that wrong is still wrong. The law applies to everyone, whether children or adults,' she said. Azalina also said that MoE has outlined comprehensive procedures in addressing bullying cases in schools through a detailed guideline document. "I've seen the book, it's quite thick and it provides detailed, step-by-step instructions on what to do and how to resolve cases,' she said. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, at the Finance Ministry's Monthly Assembly in Putrajaya earlier today, said the proposal to establish a tribunal on bullying cases involving students and children will also be brought to the Cabinet meeting. The three-day Asean Law Forum 2025 gathered 58 speakers and moderators in 15 sessions, with over 300 participants from Asean and international bodies discussing various topics, including alternative dispute resolution, commercial law reform and human rights in the digital era.
