Fix parking locations first, penalise later: Operators
2
Nagpur: Private bus operators on Wednesday claimed that despite guardian minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule's direction to finalise locations for park and pay within seven days inside the city limits, the traffic police took action against them, including the detention of their buses.
"The issue of private bus operators needing a proper location for pick-up, drop-off, and parking has been ongoing for the last 30 to 35 years. During this period, we wrote multiple letters to concerned authorities, yet no steps were taken, and now the traffic police have issued this diktat," said Baba Dawre, President of the Travels Association of Nagpur, while addressing the media.
The operators claimed that they run 'public service vehicles' which cater to the general public.
As per section 177 of the Motor Vehicle Act, it is the duty of the local body and the govt to provide them with designated spots.
"In every country, passengers are picked up from footpaths. We asked the police department to demarcate places for us on roads from where we can pick up and drop off passengers. If the police give us a spot for four vehicles and if the fifth vehicle stands on the road, then they should take action. Consensus should be found on the issue rather than taking action against us directly," said secretary of the association, Mahendra Lulley, adding that private operators who pay lakhs of rupees in tax every year still face discrimination.
The operators also claimed that Bawankule gave seven days to officials to find locations inside the city where they can pay and park, but still, police took action against them. "The ADGP (traffic) issued an order last month that private buses picking up or dropping off passengers at a spot should not face no-parking action from the police. The notification of DCP (traffic) is in complete violation of ADGP's order," said a bus operator.
They urged officials to stop the harassment and instead come up with a solution to resolve the issue. The operators also agreed that in some instances, their vehicles cause traffic jams.

Stranger befriends woman at New Delhi railway station, abducts her baby — 48-hour rescue op follows
Earlier this week, a woman boarded a train from Chennai with her three-month-old baby. She was heading to Delhi to visit a relative in Anand Parbat. When she arrived at New Delhi Railway Station, she met a man who struck up a conversation — he spoke with her for over two hours to gain her trust. Claiming to be a helpful acquaintance, he offered to accompany her to her relative's house. Panicking, the woman immediately approached the police and reported her child missing. Two days later, the baby was traced to Rajasthan and safely reunited with the mother, police said. According to police, the incident took place on Tuesday. An FIR was registered under BNS section 137(2) (kidnapping) at Anand Parbat police station, and a special team was set up under the supervision of senior officers. 'The team analysed CCTV footage from about 100 cameras… The suspect was seen getting away with the baby. To identify the accused person, his pictures were also run through the Artificial Intelligence FRS software used by the Central District. The accused was identified and traced to his village in Rajasthan's Khetri. Immediately, a police team was dispatched, and the accused was arrested. The kidnapped baby was safely recovered from the accused,' said DCP (Central) Nidhin Valsan. The accused, 32-year-old Jitender Kumar, allegedly told police during questioning that a relative had persuaded him to find a baby boy, promising financial support in return, as the family had no male child. So he travelled to Delhi intending to abduct a child. Police said he lay in wait at the railway station when he spotted the woman and approached her. Police marked the child's reunion with his mother by cutting a cake alongside the investigating team and the DCP. Videos of the celebration show the baby being handed over to a visibly relieved mother. Speaking to the police team, the mother said, 'I lost my child in Delhi, but with the help of all the police uncles here, I was reunited with him. I'm very grateful for their help.'

'Wanted me to look like Nora Fatehi': Woman alleges body shaming, dowry harassment; forced abortion by husband, in-laws
GHAZIABAD: A 26-year-old woman, a resident of Muradnagar, filed a harassment complaint against her husband and in-laws, alleging that he body shamed her and repeatedly told her that he wanted her to look like Bollywood actor Nora Fatehi. Police said the woman approached a mahila thana this week to file the complaint. The couple got married in March this year. The woman told cops that her husband, a 28-year-old physical education teacher from Meerut, was obsessed with Fatehi and pressured her to get into similar shape. She alleged he insisted on her spending three hours at the gym daily. If she didn't go to the gym, he would stop her from eating, so she doesn't put on any weight, the woman said. In her complaint, the woman said he would constantly taunt her about her physical appearance and claim that his life was ruined because he could have married a woman who looked like Fatehi. She said that her family gifted her husband a Mahindra Scorpio, cash and jewellery, apart from spending Rs 75 lakh on the wedding ceremonies. Despite such expenses, she was harassed by her in-laws for more dowry, the complaint reads. The 26-year-old also alleged that her husband gave her an abortion pill without her knowledge, forcing a miscarriage. "Two months ago, I found out that I was pregnant. I shared this with my mother-in-law, who showed no interest. One day, my husband gave me a pill, which I later researched online and discovered was used for abortions," she said in her complaint. As the woman felt unwell, her in-laws dropped her back to her parents' house. When her health deteriorated, she was admitted to a hospital where doctors informed her about the miscarriage, she said. The in-laws allegedly did not allow her to enter their home in Muradnagar in July-end. She finally approached police this week. DCP Dhawal Jaiswal said on Wednesday that police have registered an FIR against the woman's husband and his parents under relevant sections for dowry harassment, intentional humiliation and abortion in BNS. "The investigation is underway and police are checking all the allegations," the DCP said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
