The 62-year-old woman was tended to by paramedics and taken to hospital for observation, but she appeared largely unhurt.
"This has never happened in the 32-year history of the tournament. We deeply regret the incident," tournament director Ralf Weber said, promising the women a free ticket for the whole tournament next year as a small compensation.
The match which was in the first set soon resumed, and Zverev won in 1 hour 19 minutes, with the help of 10 aces and 22 winners. He did not face a break point while breaking 43rd-ranked Giron four times.
"I hope the lady is OK. Something like that should of course not happen," Zverev said post-match.

"Of course I am happy with the way I played. But the most important thing is that everyone here goes home healthy and happy."
Zverev is making another attempt at winning a first career grass court title. He was a Halle runner-up twice and last week lost another final on the surface, against American Taylor Fritz in Stuttgart.
Zverev, who next meets Italian Lorenzo Sonego, is the second seed in Halle, behind world number one and defending champion Jannik Sinner of Italy, who won his first match on Tuesday.
Other action Wednesday saw two Russians advance.
Third-seed Daniil Medvedev reached the quarter-finals 6-2, 7-5 over French player Quentin Halys, and eighth-seed Karen Kachanov beat Belgian Zizou Bergs, 7-5, 6-3 in the first round.
Halle is among the tune-up events for Wimbledon, which starts on June 30.

Ex-NFL player Ramzee Robinson sues Chiefs for wrongful termination, racial discrimination

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A former NFL defensive back is suing the Kansas City Chiefs for wrongful termination from his job as director of player engagement after accusing the franchise of discriminating against him because he is Black. Ramzee Robinson, who spent nine years with the Chiefs, filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri on Sunday. In the lawsuit, Robinson claims that he was called into a meeting in February and accused of attacking a female co-worker, and that Chiefs refused to show him security video of the encounter. Robinson ultimately was fired from his position, which involved locker room management, mentorship and other responsibilities within the team. The lawsuit claims that Robinson was paid a salary of $125,000 by the Chiefs, but that his research found other NFL teams paid comparable positions an average salary of $171,932, not including other benefits. It also claims that 'the Chiefs paid African-American business employees less than their white counterparts.' Chiefs spokesman Brad Gee told The Associated Press on Wednesday that while he could not comment on pending legal matters, 'to be clear, the Chiefs do not tolerate discrimination of any kind.' 'We look forward to the facts of this case coming to light,' Gee said. The 41-year-old Robinson was the final player chosen in the 2007 draft by Detroit. He played in 19 games over two seasons for the Lions, then appeared in three games for Philadelphia and four for Cleveland in 2009. He never played for the Chiefs. ___ AP NFL:

(David Inderlied/dpa via AP) HALLE, Germany (AP) — Alexander Zverev and an umpire helped out with ice after a spectator was struck by a falling advertising board during his match at the Halle grass-court tournament Wednesday. The board fell from the upper tier of the stadium into the crowd on the lower tier near the end of the first set and struck a 62-year-old female spectator from the local area, organizers said, adding that Zverev and umpire Renaud Lichtenstein rushed over with ice to treat her. Advertisement Organizers said the spectator was able to leave the venue by herself, holding an ice pack provided by Zverev to her neck. She was later taken to a hospital as a precaution, they added. 'Something like this has never happened in the 32-year history of our tournament. We deeply regret the incident,' tournament director Ralf Weber said. The tournament said that Weber met with the spectator in the event's medical center and gave her a free pass for next year's tournament. A statement from two event managers, Udo Kleine und Uwe Greipel-Dominik, on the tournament website suggested that screws holding the board in place might have come close because of 'drumming against the boards." Advertisement They added that nearby boards were checked before the match continued and that plans were in place to check all other boards at that court. It didn't stop Zverev from racing to a 6-2, 6-1 win over American Marcos Giron in the first round of the tournament, a warm-up for Wimbledon. It continued the German player's strong form on grass after he was the runner-up in Stuttgart last week. Also Wednesday at Halle, third-seeded Daniil Medvedev won 6-2, 7-5 over Quentin Halys and eighth-seeded Karen Khachanov won 7-5, 6-3 against Zizou Bergs in the first round. Alex Michelsen beat Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-6 (5), 7-5 and will play Medvedev next. ___ This story has been corrected. Zverev won the match 6-2, 6-1, not 6-1, 6-2. ___ More AP tennis:
