Minister Ashish Shelar slams BJP MP over remarks against Marathi people

Indian Express5 days ago
BJP leader and Minister Ashish Shelar on Friday responded to remarks made by its party MP Nishikant Dubey, who had said that the Thackerays (Uddhav and Raj) would be 'thrashed repeatedly' if they stepped outside Maharashtra and accused Marathi people of surviving on 'our money'.
Without naming Dubey, Shelar said in the Legislative Assembly that no one should question the contribution of the Marathi community. 'Some MP from Jharkhand has commented on the work done by Marathi people. I won't name him—he is not a member of this House. But the Mahayuti and BJP are very clear: anyone can speak within the limits of law, but no one has the right to question the deeds and contribution of Marathi people,' he said.
Shelar added, 'The whole nation knows our contribution to the GDP. We made the country's first film and established the first navy. Marathi people do not live on alms given by anyone.'
Nishikant Dubey, BJP MP from Godda in Jharkhand, had earlier said, 'If the Thackerays step out of Maharashtra—and come to Bihar, Uttar Pradesh or Tamil Nadu—they will be thrashed repeatedly. You people (Marathi) are surviving on our money. What kind of industries do you have? If you are brave enough to beat Hindi speakers, then you should also beat those who speak Urdu, Tamil, and Telugu.'
Shelar told the House that while he was refraining from naming the MP, he felt compelled to respond. 'It is not just about politics–it is about respect for the people of this state,' he said.
Shiv Sena UBT chief Uddhav Thackeray also hit out at Dubey. 'No one knows these people here and they should not speak anything about us. They have no stature, and one should not pay attention to what these people say.'

'Another way to get back NRC': Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal on revision of electoral rolls in Bihar

Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal on Saturday while addressing the issue of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar said that it is "another way to get back NRC " and alleged that the government wants to impose "authoritarian" rule in the country. Sibal further alleged a "partnership" between the Election Commission of India and the BJP, claiming that in Maharashtra, the votes were increased, whereas in Bihar, they will decrease. "It is being said that this exercise is a pilot project; It is another way to get back want to impose majoritarian rule in don't want anyone else to come to power in India. In Maharashtra, they increased the number of votes, and here they are reducing them. It is my allegation that there is a partnership between the Election Commission and them (BJP)", Kapil Sibal told ANI. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas Prices In Dubai Might Be More Affordable Than You Think Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Quote Undo The Supreme Court on Thursday allowed the Election Commission to continue with its exercise of conducting a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar. A bench of Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Joymalya Bagchi did not stay the SIR process but asked the ECI to consider allowing Aadhaar, ration cards, and electoral photo identity cards as admissible documents to prove voter identity during the SIR of electoral rolls being undertaken in Bihar. Live Events "We are of the prima facie opinion that in the interest of justice, the Election Commission will also include documents like Aadhaar, Ration Card, Voter ID card, etc.. It is for the ECI to decide whether it wants to accept the documents or not, and if it does not, then provide reasons for its decision, which shall be sufficient to satisfy the petitioners. Meanwhile, petitioners are not pressing for an interim stay," the bench stated in its order. In its order, the top court noted that the timeline for the process is very short since elections in Bihar are due in November.

Tailor Kanhaiya Lal's wife writes to Modi seeking release of Udaipur Files

The wife of murdered Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal Teli, Jashoda, has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking his help in the release of the film Udaipur Files. On July 10, just a day ahead of its release, the Delhi High Court temporarily stayed the release of the film after it was highlighted that the thematic expression of the film was akin to hate speech and vilification of Muslims. In her letter sent Saturday, Jashoda wrote, 'The Muslim organisations and their lawyer have stopped the release of the film, on my husband's murder, through the courts. I have seen the film myself; it is the story of his murder. There is nothing wrong in it. He was killed three years ago and now the lawyer is saying that whatever happened cannot be shown in the film. (My) children are saying that now the Modi government will decide on the film.' 'You know the wrong which was done to us. And now those same people who killed him are going to the courts. I request you to get this film released so that the whole world can know the truth,' she wrote. She has asked Modi 'to please give us time to meet. I want to come to Delhi and meet you with my two children.' On June 28, 2022, two persons — Mohammad Riyaz and Ghouse Mohammad — posed as customers and hacked to death Kanhaiya Lal Teli at his shop in Udaipur over a post shared by him on social media in support of Nupur Sharma, a BJP spokesperson who was suspended for her objectionable remarks about the Prophet during a live television debate. In the Delhi High Court, petitioner Maulana Arshad Madani, Principal of the Darul Uloom Deoband, had filed the PIL pointing out that the movie is 'replete with dialogues and instances that had led to communal disharmony in the very recent past and thus carry every potential to again stoke the same communal sentiments.' The division bench of Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Anish Dayal relegated the petitioner to the Central government to seek a review of the Central Board of Film Certification's decision to grant a certificate greenlighting the release of the film.
